A group of Oregonians ventured into enemy territory on Saturday to call for the freeing of Michael Strickland from an unfair and unjust prosecution in Portland.
Leo Stratton, a citizen journalist, organized the event which saw people gather to put into clear focus what the stakes are for first and second amendment lovers as a result of this prosecution.
Strickland, a freelance journalist, drew his legal, licensed concealed hand gun to fend off a violent mob of anarchists while covering a Black Lives Matter/Don’t Shoot PDX march and rally July 7, 2016.
After covering the event for awhile, Strickland was assaulted by a group of protesters who admitted in court they conspired to throw him out. They assaulted him once and then came back after him. Strickland was forced to draw his weapon after efforts to back them off with verbal commands and defensively using his monopod failed to back them off.
The mob came from three sides in order to attack and stop him from covering the rally.
Rightly believing he was in danger, Strickland swept the black bloc attired mob, without his finger on the trigger, to stop the threat coming at him. It worked. He was able to back up the street to safety — until the Multnomah County DA’s office victimized him again.
On a sunny Saturday, the “Release Mike Strickland” rally positioned itself in front of Portland’s City Hall. Coincidentally, across the street, the same protester crowd that had victimized Mike was present for an anti-Donald Trump rally. The Strickland rally was heckled a bit but, as far as I know, nothing violent occurred.
Radio talk show host Jayne Carroll was one of the featured speakers. She told the crowd in part:
“I’m not close to Mike Strickland, but he is one of my heroes. He’s been on my show a lot. He’s a young man driven by the truth.
He is a pioneer. He is a patriot. He is doing a job that the mainstream propagandists refuse to do. We need people like Mike Strickland. They want to stop people like Mike Strickland.

Fellow journalist and friend of Strickland, Dan Sandini put things in perspective about why the far left and anti-gun rights Multnomah County DA’s office is going after him:
“Mike didn’t do a damn thing except stand up for the first amendment. There is no first amendment without the second amendment. Could that have not been more perfectly illustrated?
You had a mob of people coming after Mike. Why? Why are they coming at him? To stifle his freedom of speech. To stifle his freedom of the press and to stifle his freedom of expression.
And they have finally believed that they have found a way to shut Mike Strickland up but I am going to tell you here right now: one way or another, this will not stand.
Andrew Breitbart who was my mentor, James O’Keefe who is my friend – and they would be here saying the same things that I am saying right now.
And I send this message out to the district attorney, the corrupt, unjust district attorney who threw 21 felonies [correction: ten felonies, eleven misdemeanors] at a guy for just defending his life just so they wouldn’t break his arm again! That’s all Mike was doing!
I invite the district attorney to do the right thing. I invite the judge at the hearing for his sentencing to do the right thing. I invited the judges on appeal to overthrow this thing and to do the right thing. It is your last chance to do the right thing.”

Write and radio host Tammy Jackson gave a primer on the second amendment and then hit the perfect note asking, “What in the world is going on in Portland, Oregon?”
“Control. It’s all about control. Progressives are getting more and more strident because patriots are waking up.

But the left is still at war with us. What in the world has happened with our friend Michael Strickland when rushed by a violent crowd who would not back up when he asked them – he unholstered his pistol for about four seconds without his finger on the trigger because they were not complying with his request to back up.

I’d want to know what in the world is going on in Portland, Oregon and in our nation when anarchists have the right to riot and endanger peaceful citizens, but a peaceful citizen who is legally carrying is charged with fending off a most certain assault.
We need to speak up for Mike Strickland.”
