Baltimore’s ‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’ Real-Time Smear

Days after the Baltimore’s Freddie Gray riots, there was another incident that almost became another apocryphal ‘Hands up, Don’t Shoot’ moment.

A version of his post was originally published by Victoria Taft at PoliticalVanguard.com narrative final

Sometimes you watch the news or hear ‘man on the street’ interviews on the radio and later, when the truth comes out, wonder to yourself, ‘Where did that cockamamie story come from?’

In the Michael Brown case in Ferguson, Missouri, interviews contained in both the Grand Jury testimony and the federal investigation revealed Brown’s friend, Dorian Johnson, conceived of the ‘hands up, don’t shoot’ narrative and began to spread it around.

Investigators later deemed doubtful Johnson’s ability to see the last seconds of his friend’s life  because of where he claimed to be hiding.

But, by the time he was finished, Johnson was on TV blatantly spouting the ‘hands up, don’t shoot’ narrative, and people, later ruled not credible by the authorities,  picked up the story and lied under oath.

It was untrue but it was everywhere. And even after it was disproved, protesters still used it.

Protesters used the ‘hands up’ meme in Baltimore, well after the world learned it was bogus.

Just days after the riots in Baltimore, ‘the big lie’ almost happened again.

A man was stopped by cops and subdued after he pulled out a revolver at Pennsylvania and North — the flashpoint of the original riots.

MSNBC host, Joy Reid, was on the ground and spoke to the “victim’s” relative, who revealed the name of the man “shot” and the fact he was only reaching at his waist band.

Fox News was on live and reported the “shooting”, but walked back the story within minutes. Shepherd Smith apologized and said they’d “screwed up”.

MSNBC never recanted, and instead blamed Twitter for their story.

MSNBC went on the air, with a person actually on the ground, and reported a falsehood for which they never apologized. They also talked to the “victim’s” family member who lied about the incident and never apologized.

But MSNBC was right about one thing: They saw the story on Twitter. I know that because I did too.

The Tweet talked of a shooting and contained a link leading to a live-stream of the “shooting” scene.

And here’s what I saw:

After hearing a gun shot, people came upon the scene only to see a man lying on the ground. Police surrounded him.

Within seconds, a few people on scene began pronouncing the man face down on the ground had ‘been shot’.

Though there was no blood and angry people were close enough to see, the story caught fire.

Soon, a bigger group of angry people converged at the site and, within seconds, a couple of angry men began confronting cops within inches of their faces and accusing them of shooting the black man on the ground. You can hear their voices saying:

     The police shot him!
     They done shot him, bro!
     They shot him?
They shot in him the back, man!

Another voice rang out urging people to go after one of the cops:

     He’s the cop!
     He’s the cop!

That prompted a man to confront an officer — as if picking a school yard fight — getting within inches of the officer’s face and taunting:

     You shot my man, yo?
     You shot my man, yo?
     You shot my man, yo?

The man recording the event and putting it out over the internet pronounced:

     Hey, police just shot someone!
Police just shot SOMEONE IN THE BACK!
     Tweet it out, please?
They just shot someone and they maced someone.
They shot that man in the back.
     Tweet it out.
Now they’re macing people for no reason!

Then he beckoned them to come riot:

Come to Penn and North now.

Soon, the woman caught on tape and who was used in several TV news stories came along to declare:

I watched that man shoot him!
I watched it with my own eyes!

Guy taking video:

File a report on the M******F****r!

He escalated his rhetoric and urged riot again:

Come down to Penn & North NOW!
    Those M*****F*****r cops.
    They maced someone.
    Tweet it out!

And someone did. And that’s when I saw it and MSNBC News did, too.

But just when you think things could spin out of control, they got worse. Someone’s voice in the crowd authoritatively pronounced:

They just shot that man in the back.

The person recording the event embellished:

Baltimore police just shot a man in the back.
Baltimore police just shot that man in the back.

Almost none of what they said was true. They just made it up.

Police did pepper spray some of the people who were getting out of control and pushed them down the street and out of the way of the take down.

A Baltimore police officer told anyone who asked him that the man was seen with the gun. WBAL radio reported he’d been spotted via the ‘City Crime Watch’ camera. When he saw cops, he reached for his gun, dropped it, the gun discharged and cops seized upon him:

A fleeing suspect pulled out a revolver, which went off, and no officers fired their weapons, police said, denying conflicting reports from people at the scene.

If that guy had been shot by officers another big lie would have gathered even more momentum. As it was, this was bad enough.
Later, the paid professional protesters, of whom Deray McKesson is one, launched an assault on the media.

Deray was on the ground in Ferguson and won some fame for his activism there. Then he packed his bags and showed up in Baltimore. He was identified by Wolf Blitzer of CNN as a Baltimore community organizer. Deray, originally from Baltimore, is not.

I’d show you Deray McKesson’s original tweet, but he blocked me after I outed him as a professional peripatetic protester.

Wresting the narrative is important.

Trayvon Martin thought George Zimmerman was gay and was worried the neighborhood watch captain would sexually ‘molest’ him. We found that out in Zimmerman’s trial from none other than Martin’s girlfriend, Rachel Jeantel, who was on the phone with Martin as he eyed the man watching him.

The teenager was also high on marijuana, his toxicology tests showed THC in his system when he got into it with Zimmerman.

And he was coming back from the store where he purchased items to make ‘Sizzurp’ to get another high. But to the media and in the world of the Reverend Al Charlatan, Martin was a be-haoloed teen angel who was just trying to get home with his Skittles and Arizona Iced Tea.

Michael Brown was a 6’4″ 300lb ‘Gentle Giant’ who wouldn’t hurt a fly. He traveled the streets of Ferguson in his cap and gown, setting an example for all youth while readying himself for his college career. He was only trying to comply with Officer Darren Wilson. He put his hands up and innocently pleaded with the malevolent Officer not to hurt him.

Reality: He ‘jacked up an old Asian man at the store, took a bunch of Swisher Sweets to roll blunts and attacked a cop, going for his gun.

Things in Baltimore were bad enough. Six cops are under indictment. You don’t have to lie to make things look bad, they already are.

The left tried to make it worse, foment riots and create another urban legend and new narrative. And you saw it in real time.

IJR: Oregon Sheriff Explains Why He Won’t Enforce a Proposed Gun Control Measure Even If It’s the Law

The Josephine County, Oregon Sheriff Says He Can’t be Bothered to Enforce the Proposed Law

One of my latest stories from Independent Journal Review:

An Oregon sheriff has voiced opposition to a proposed law that would require a background check on the private sale of guns. So, he just plans to ignore the law if it passes.

The Herald News Tribune reports that Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel repeated his position to a group of gun rights activists, saying the law doesn’t seem in line with the county charter.

Daniel added that the violation would only be a misdemeanor and that budget cutbacks don’t allow him to enforce such low-priority crimes:

IJR: Anti-Gun Group Puts Adult Words in Kids’ Mouths to Cut the NRA Down to Size

Michael Bloomberg’s latest anti gun group uses ‘the children’ again to make a point — but does it work?

gun victoria taft independent journal review

The group ‘Everytown for Gun Safety‘ has produced a new commercial it hopes will cut its prime nemesis — the NRA — down to pint size.

The newest anti-gun group funded by Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg features children reading the words of NRA executive Wayne LaPierre. They call the spot, Lil’ Waynes (LaPierre).

Bloomberg is just the latest to put adult words into children’s mouths in hopes of making a desired target look childish.

Clackamas Co Woman Is Gun Supporters Worst Nightmare: ‘Put a Gun to Your Head!’

Clackamas Gun Rights Meeting Brings Out the Typical Anti Gun Citizen.

In a meeting in which Clackamas County Commissioners passed a symbolic resolution in support of the Second Amendment, a woman rose to give testimony.

Her testimony is as inaccurate as it is hysterical; as vapid as it is wrong; as ridiculous as it is hilarious.

Thanks to Laughing at Liberals, it is now available for all to see. He also transcribed her words for your reading pleasure:

The 2nd Amendment was written 1776… every town had guns, they were kept in the armories… We do have armories, but we use them to house the Red Cross when there’s a disaster”… “All of these law abiding citizens are shooting back and forth in front of our house”… “To get that gun, we walked into Wal Mart, went up to the gun counter, showed them our license, he bought the gun and carried it out… That’s how difficult the background check was”… “You talk about big money coming in. What do you call the NRA and all of the gun manufacturers that are making the NRA nothing but a publicity arm”…”But to sit and say absolutely no change, you might as well put a gun to your head, because that is sheer stupidity

Yes, by all means, lady, encourage people to ‘put a gun to your head’.

From the Zero:

Commissioners Tootie Smith, Paul Savas and Chair John Ludlow voted in favor of the resolution; Martha Schrader abstained. Jim Bernard had an excused absence from Thursday’s business meeting, but previously indicated he would have voted in favor of the resolution given the opportunity.

Ah, yes, Martha Schrader. Stay tuned for that story.

Oregon Medical Association top doc at Gabby Gifford event says f**k gun rights laws

Claim: “When women die in Oregon, they die at the hands of guns.” Which means that we’ve beaten heart disease and cancer, ladies!

Daylight Disinfectant was given extraordinary access to a recent anti gun confab with shooting victim turned anti gun activist former Congresswoman Gabby Gifford recently in Portland, Oregon.
Between comments suggesting gun grabbing laws be cloaked under the guise of public health standards like seatbelt laws, there were self satisfied smiles, and much anthropomorphizing of guns (when guns are dangerous…), it was quite a smug fest.

They claim to love victims, but seeks to create more through their efforts to curb access. Watch the video.

Piers Morgan exits CNN

I wish no ill on any man. Here’s the “but”: Piers was a disaster at CNN and needed to go. Now, instead of riding the anti gun hobby horse to a ratings bonanza, CNN is hoping the Malaysian Air disaster will do the same. Good luck.

And reaction?

Yeah, like he says,

But, good news, he’s got a job offer,

As he said goodbye, his twitter feed played a parade of images of Piers’ ‘gets,’ including Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton. Huh, didn’t see Ben Shapiro’s visage there. Well, here it is for your listening enjoyment,

*Audio* Congressman sends BATFE a howler over San Diego gun dealer raid

hunter letterCongressman Duncan Hunter sends BATFE demand letter about raid at gun dealer Ares Armor.

San Diego Congressman Duncan Hunter has fired off a letter to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) demanding an explanation of the raid of the San Diego area Ares Armor gun stores.

As you can see in my backgrounder here, Ares Armor CEO Dimitri Karras is fighting back against the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms’ raid on March 15th at his store fronts and storage facilities in San Diego county carting off all theares armor 80 lower

computers containing customer information.

Karras sold “80% lower receivers” at his National City store. Eighty percent lowers are the foundations of gun. They don’t shoot, yet the BATFE has now changed its position, according to Karras, and considers the plastic handle a “gun” it has the right to regulate. This is tantamount to regulators saying they should be able to tax the receiver of a landline as a functioning phone.

On Friday I talked with Karras on KOGO Radio (Listen here) about what happens next. He’s lawyered up and they’re in a waiting mode until the Feds are done with their “investigation.”

Gun dealer raided by BATFE, customer list confiscated in San Diego

ares-armor-signDimitrios Karras is the in-your-face owner of San Diego’s Ares Armor gun dealerships. The gun dealer started with the towering sign on the roof of his National City store adorned with a silhouette of an AR 15 and continued to tweak local officials with his radio commercials which argue the sign is being targeted by city officials. Karras relentlessly challenges anyone he perceives as infringing on his and others’ Second Amendment rights.

ares 3

On Saturday, officers from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) raided his National City store and confiscated the names of all his customers.Karras and his attorneys had won an injunction against such a raid but it was apparently lifted. See video from the raid below.  Karras captured screen shots from his security cameras and mocked them on his Facebook page (see nearby).

At issue is what else is on Karras’ large sign. The words “Unserialized. No Registration. Legal.” As he explained to me on KOGO Radio February 17th (Hear the interview here), his National City store sells only the seat for a gun–the plastic lower base–which can be taken to a machine shop and, along with other components, turned into a weapon. He says guns manufactured by individuals for their own use are perfectly legal and within the scope of the 1968 gun law.

Karras is fighting battles on two fronts. He believes he was unconstitutionally targeted by National City officials for ares armor sign enhancedthe content of his sign. The Mayor denies it, telling me the city is phasing out all roof top signs and that Karras should have known about the ordinance before he leased the spot.

But somebody else was interested in the content of that sign, too: The Feds. And now Karras is in their crosshairs. The BATFE considered the lower piece of the gun a weapon and demanded Karras turn over the names of all his customers. In a declaration seeking to halt the raid, Karras explained the Feds were wrong about their legal interpretation and vowed not to turn over the names of his customers. He refused until forced to at the point of a gun by the Feds on Saturday. Every person who purchased that equipment can expect a Federal agent to come knocking.

Karras is being represented by the same legal team who just won a big victory in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals regarding conceal carry permits.

Clank! Multnomah Co GOP takes fire after news of gun raffle to “celebrate” MLK and Lincoln.

You’ve got to admit, holding a gun raffle to “celebrate the legacy of two great Republicans who demonstrated leadership and courage that all of us still lean on today: Martin Luther King, Jr and Abraham Lincoln” is a tone deaf way to show respect to  men who were murdered by assassins’ bullets.

The Multnomah County GOP is holding the raffle for a hand gun or an AR-15 rifle to raise money for the party and draw people to the annual Lincoln Day Dinner featuring Senator Ted Cruz’s father, Rafael. The idea is taking fire from local media and from one Portland African American businessman who thinks the idea is wrongheaded and racist.

Friend of the GOP and real estate broker, Fred Stewart, posted this to his Facebook page today,

Unaware of the story in the media, I naturally asked Fred what he was talking about and why he was going nuclear–alleging racism by an entire group of people–without any rationale.

Fred 2

Stewart explained the idea of a gun raffle to honor two American heroes who lost their lives in their quest for freedom is “humiliating” and insensitive to black people the party is trying to entice. He implied MCRP leader Jeff Reynolds must be racist to even consider hosting such an event.

The Multnomah County chair may have his short comings, but being a racist is not one of them. Moreover, the co-planner of the event is the mother to African American children who ironically had been targets of taunting and racist chanting by Portland leftists who crashed a 2011 Tea Party event.

The gun story has been picked up by local media which is eager to regurgitate the facile tale of ‘racist, gun toting Republicans.’ Commenters on the Willamette Week story are pushing the tiresome cliches.

Cherub Rock  Cherub Rock

Anyone?…. crickets are usually what you get when you ask a (R)etard a question.

There’s more than one amendment to the Constitution. Should look into that.  Also: Rafael Cruz is guano-psychotic

A person under fire takes cover, retreats if necessary, and re-positions.  After this misfire, it’s probably time for the MCRP to retreat from combining the two events and re-position.

Starbucks CEO’s Letter to Gun Owners: “Appreciate” Us Without the Guns.

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz listens to anti gun activists, asks legal gun owners to stop “Appreciation Days.

guns and coffee
Starbucks CEO gives win to anti gun protesters, asking gun owners to leave the pieces either at home or concealed.

The CEO of the ubiquitous Starbucks Coffee chain has taken out full page ads in major U.S. newspapers to placate anti gun activists who Howard Schultz claims have been hassling his workers and customers over the issue of guns in the shops.

In an open letter (see it below) to customers which begins, “My Fellow Americans,” Schultz asks gun enthusiasts to stop appreciating Starbucks so much because it’s ticking off the anti gun folks.

“That’s why I am writing today with a respectful request that customers no longer bring firearms into our stores or outdoor seating areas.”

The Starbucks CEO has kept an open mind about open carry: if it’s legal to openly carry a gun in a state, Starbucks allows guns in their stores. And gun rights enthusiasts have thanked Starbucks by holding what they call, “Starbucks Appreciation Days” across the nation. They’ve shown their appreciation in a tangible way, giving Starbucks lots of business and on a bumper sticker. See it nearby.

Recently, however, we’ve seen the “open carry” debate become increasingly uncivil and, in some cases, even threatening. Pro-gun activists have used our stores as a political stage for media events misleadingly called “Starbucks Appreciation Days” that disingenuously portray Starbucks as a champion of “open carry.” To be clear: we do not want these events in our stores.

Read that again,

…become increasingly uncivil and, in some cases, even threatening

Who’s doing the threatening? We find out in the next sentence,

Some anti-gun activists have also played a role in ratcheting up the rhetoric and friction, including soliciting and confronting our customers and partners.

Schultz’s letter attempts a nuanced stance: could you appreciate us WITHOUT the guns?! But the intent is unmistakable: gun enthusiasts are “disingenuous” about Starbucks’ motives while anti-gun enthusiasts are “threatening.” Who’s being asked to leave their rights at the curb? Gun owners.

I’m not going to vouch for every gun enthusiast who may run his mouth off at a protester, but I’m sure as heck not going to vouch for the usual rent-a-mobs we often see hassling, yelling, chanting and screaming at their political detractors. I’ve seen this movie too often. Anti fur protesters screaming mere inches from customers and committing acts of vandalism, phony fast food workers on ‘strike,’ SEIU thugs beating a (black) conservative guy selling T shirts and racist and homophobic epithets hurled at conservatives (including blacks and gays) gathering for a meeting.

Howard Schultz’s employees have seen them too. Does his letter ask those anti gun people to stop their collective hissy fits at his stores? No. He undoubtedly doesn’t want to spark a debate about first amendment rights. He is willing to ask second amendment enthusiasts to keep their guns at home, however.

Schultz said yesterday that the guns make his customers feel “uncomfortable.”
He forgot that gun owners are also his customers.

But with his public disavowal of gun owners openly carrying, he has given anti gun activists what they want, showing once again that a few loud voices can eclipse actual civil rights.

Here’s the full text of Howard Schultz’s letter:
Dear Fellow Americans,
Few topics in America generate a more polarized and emotional debate than guns. In recent months, Starbucks stores and our partners (employees) who work in our stores have been thrust unwillingly into the middle of this debate. That’s why I am writing today with a respectful request that customers no longer bring firearms into our stores or outdoor seating areas.
From the beginning, our vision at Starbucks has been to create a “third place” between home and work where people can come together to enjoy the peace and pleasure of coffee and community. Our values have always centered on building community rather than dividing people, and our stores exist to give every customer a safe and comfortable respite from the concerns of daily life.
We appreciate that there is a highly sensitive balance of rights and responsibilities surrounding America’s gun laws, and we recognize the deep passion for and against the “open carry” laws adopted by many states. (In the United States, “open carry” is the term used for openly carrying a firearm in public.) For years we have listened carefully to input from our customers, partners, community leaders and voices on both sides of this complicated, highly charged issue.
Our company’s longstanding approach to “open carry” has been to follow local laws: we permit it in states where allowed and we prohibit it in states where these laws don’t exist. We have chosen this approach because we believe our store partners should not be put in the uncomfortable position of requiring customers to disarm or leave our stores. We believe that gun policy should be addressed by government and law enforcement — not by Starbucks and our store partners.
Some anti-gun activists have also played a role in ratcheting up the rhetoric and friction, including soliciting and confronting our customers and partners.
For these reasons, today we are respectfully requesting that customers no longer bring firearms into our stores or outdoor seating areas — even in states where “open carry” is permitted — unless they are authorized law enforcement personnel.
I would like to clarify two points. First, this is a request and not an outright ban. Why? Because we want to give responsible gun owners the chance to respect our request — and also because enforcing a ban would potentially require our partners to confront armed customers, and that is not a role I am comfortable asking Starbucks partners to take on. Second, we know we cannot satisfy everyone. For those who oppose “open carry,” we believe the legislative and policy-making process is the proper arena for this debate, not our stores. For those who champion “open carry,” please respect that Starbucks stores are places where everyone should feel relaxed and comfortable. The presence of a weapon in our stores is unsettling and upsetting for many of our customers.
I am proud of our country and our heritage of civil discourse and debate. It is in this spirit that we make today’s request. Whatever your view, I encourage you to be responsible and respectful of each other as citizens and neighbors,
Howard Schultz

Author Brad Thor Explains to Me His Offer to Buy George Zimmerman a New Gun: If They Can Take Zimmerman’s Gun Away, They Can Take Yours.

Author Brad Thor, an American Patriot and best selling book author, issued an unusual offer last night:

Brad Thor Offer to Zimmerman

After getting word that Florida officials were returning Zimmerman’s gun and other personal effects following his not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin killing, Eric Holder’s Department of Justice stepped in and froze the prosecutors’ ability to give back any of Zimmerman’s personal effects. He purportedly did it in anticipation of a civil rights lawsuit against Zimmerman. Holder’s own FBI has found no racial animus, required for a civil rights lawsuit, but the rule of law is a malleable thing in the Obama Administration.

Steamed upon hearing it, Thor made his offer. I was able to talk with him this morning in a quick interview on Mark Larson’s Show at KCBQ San Diego. Listen here>>> Brad Thor – TAFT – 7.19.13
