A Bridge Too False

Where both the Columbian and the Oregonian fail the communities they are supposed to serve, the Willamette Week blows the lid off of the CRC project.

A Bridge Too False Turns out most of the case for the $3.6 billion Columbia River Crossing Isn’t true.

“More than 20 lawmakers—Republicans and Democrats—have raised hard questions about the project. They say Oregon hasn’t taken a serious look at the project’s risks or at cheaper ways to fix the traffic problems at the Oregon-Washington border.”

“In the current legislative session, lawmakers have debated the proper size of chicken cages, whether it’s OK to use plastic bags, and what kind of dirt should be named the official state soil. But they have only glanced at the project known as the CRC.”

“We’ve had no substantive debate on the project,” says State Rep. Mitch Greenlick (D-Portland), a CRC critic who calls the project “a steamroller headed off a cliff.”

Myth No. 1: Spending billions on a new I-5 bridge project at the Columbia River will solve congestion.
Myth No. 2: We have to build a bridge because the traffic is only going to get worse.
Myth No. 3: The current bridge is too dangerous.
Myth No. 4: We have a plan to pay for it.

Avakian Slaps Radio Cab With $341,000.00 Fine for Having Leased Cabbies

The Bureau of Labor and Industries chief who now has his eye on David Wu’s first Congressional District seat apparently seeks to change the way cab companies do business. And he’s using a sledghammer to do it. He’s fined Portland based Radio Cab $341,000.00 because Avakian wants cab drivers to be employees and not free agents or leasees.
I had a Radio Cab executive on the program yesterday to talk about it. Watch this space for the interview.
Wow you can demand a wholesale change of business plans with one fine?
Radio cab’s business director tells me they can’t afford to pay it.
This move seems positively Kroger-esque. I don’t know the entire context of this caper right now, but this is the way it looks to us. We’ll try to get Avakian on to explain it.

Sam’s Sex Change Operation

…and what an operation it is: a total operation on taxpayers. Ever since Sam Adams had his unfortunate common sense bypass surgery, he’s left the taxpayers in the sloshing bucket of biowaste.
Sewer money is raided for bike paths, then the mayor turns around and raises fees for water and sewage (85% over five years!). The shell game that is light rail/Sellwood Bridge/car tax should be dissected in a college ethics class for what NOT to do. Examples of his profligate spending extend from here to…well, up that hill over there at the door of the Kohler Coaster on pill hill.
Now he wants us to cover sex change operations.

The Portland mayor says a sex change operation “only” costs $32,000, so why not have taxpayers cover it for city employees? I ask him this: if it “only” costs $32,000 why not have your overpaid staffers (here) pay for it?
I forgot to add that Kirk the Wonder Man discovers that sex change operations costs $50,000-$100,000 depending on which way you want to swing.

Who THEY’RE Following on Twitter

In light of WeinerGate we checked some of our elected officials yesterday. Good thing.
As of yesterday the Accidental Senator Jeff Merkley was following a bunch of news agencies–and singer Taylor Hicks—but this morning Hicks was gone from his “following” file.
Governor Chris Gregoire followed a bunch of state agencies and organizations–and Governor Jennifer Granholm. Wow, Washington, she could be taking cues from one of the worst governors in America.
Senator Wyden follows the usual news agencies, lefty columnist Matt Miller and MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan and many other MSNBC illuminati. No Fox allowed. He differs from his fellow libs and follows two Republicans: State Rep Matt Wingard and pretend Republican Olympia Snowe. He’s the only one who follows persons with opposing points of view.
Rep Schrader follows the usual news and fellow congressmen as well as this lady and this lady.

Bow Tie Blumenauer appears to have just added Rep Anthony Weiner to his ‘Following’ list. Well, at least it sat right at the top of his list. Maybe it’s a statement of solidarity from one distinguished member to another.
Some of the other liberatti on Blumenauer’s list includes Nicholas Kristoff of the NYT, Think Progress, 1000 Friends,  some guy named TeeFriz, Keith Olbermann and Steph Cappa, who appears to be his aide. He also follows “Grist,” which is not a homoerotic website but a lefty blogger (nifty looking website, too) which featured a story about “TeaB******s.”
I thought liberals were supposed to be so smart and open minded but this group follows nearly no persons of opposing points of view. Interesting, no?

Free Yoga Classes Forming Now (At Portland’s $47m Homeless Shelter). Covered Shopping Cart Parking Available.

The Bud Clark homeless shelter opens tomorrow amid much fanfare and hopes of curing homelessness. Oh, would that it were true.
It’s a noble mission. The trouble is there are no time limits for those living in the center’s studio apartment units. The job training, GED courses and writing classes that the center will offer will be entirely optional. The center’s taxpayer-funded yoga sessions and nutrition classes, meanwhile, will be available to anybody who shows up.
The concerns are justified. Over the past two decades, government and nonprofits in the city have built over a thousand shelter beds and provided numerous services, including transition programs, to the homeless. Yet the homeless population continues to rise. A 2009 report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development found that Oregon has the highest rate of homeless people in the country. No doubt some of this is due to the recession, which hit Oregon harder than most states. But Portland has become a real destination for homeless people.
The Portland freelance writer who wrote the piece found here forgot one thing: the covered parking complex for the stolen shopping carts used by many homeless.
