Sweet Cakes Same Sex Fall Out: Bankruptcy Over State $135K Fine for ‘Mental Rape’ ‘Lack of Appetite’ ‘Weight Gain’ of Lesbian Couple

As in every case, including Sweet Cakes by Melissa, administrative judges work for the departments over which they adjudicate.

Welcome DrudgeReport readers!

Almost as soon as the administrative law judge working for the government of Oregon handed down a $135,000.00 fine against Sweet Cakes by Melissa, the Go Fund Me page set up to help pay their legal bills was taken down.

Friday, the bureaucrat working for the state of Oregon ruled the bakery owners personally owed the money to a lesbian couple because in January of 2013, the devout Christian bakers told the couple they wouldn’t make a cake for their wedding.

Aaron and Melissa Klein, whose business has since closed, now face personal bankruptcy.

The Daily Signal reports Aaron says the state chose to go after the couple to destroy them:

Aaron, in an exclusive interview with The Daily Signal on Sunday, said the state of Oregon is attempting to “obliterate” his family.

“The state is now saying that we can award damages above and beyond what you have already suffered … and they have no qualms about doing this,” he said. “It is really showing the state is taking a stance on absolutely obliterating somebody that takes a different stance than the state has.”

As The Daily Signal reports, Klein attorney, Anna Harmon, seems to indicate the state was on a seek and destroy mission:

“An important thing to understand about the damages the state is claiming in this case is that the [fine] isn’t going to come from liquidating business assets,” she said.

Their business is gone. They don’t have business assets so when we talk about [the fine], it’s personal. It means that’s money they would have used to feed their children that they can’t use anymore.

In order to spin up the fine, the lesbian couple had to submit a list of horribles they suffered at the hands of the bakers.

Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer have since managed to plan a wedding and mother a child but were apparently barely able to cope as the case went on.

The (poorly) alphabetized list reads like a 15 year old’s attempt to make a glossary for a last-minute research paper. See both full lists below, but here are just a few of the harms from one of the women: (note the conflicting or same maladies):

A: Anger, Anxiety, Apprehension

B:

C: Concern for privacy, crying

D. Degradation, demeanment“, depression, devastation, disbelief, discomfort, doubt

E.  (listed after the F’s) Excessive sleep, embarrassment, exhaustion

F. Forced to borrow money, fear of not being able to get another job, felt stupid

G.

H. Horror, humiliation, hurt, hysteria.

I.  Insomnia, indignity, irritability with family and friends

J.

L. Loss of appetite, loss of sleep, pride, etc

M. Mental anguish, mental distress

N. Nervous appetite

P. Pale and sick after work, public humiliation

Q.

R. Resentment, ridicule

S. Sadness, self doubt, shock, stunned, surprise

T. Tension

U. Uncertainty, upset, upset stomach

V.

W. Worry, wounded

X.

Y.

Z.

The other member of the couple listed ‘Mental Rape’ as a by product of the case.

It sounds as if the couple has a bigger case against the State of Oregon for the legal process than from the initial harm from Sweet Cakes by Melissa. Look at those lists: most of the harms came after they complained and the state took over the legal action against the Christian bakery.

The Daily Signal reports Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries chief, Brad Avakian, could reduce the fine if he wanted to. Considering the progressive ideologue has championed the case in his politicization of BOLI, that is doubtful.

After all, as a progressive hero once pointed out:

If You Want to Make an Omelet, You Must Be Willing to Break a Few Eggs.

Even if it means sacrificing one family and their heart felt, sincere, religious beliefs to the ‘state’.

‘Progressives?’ Makes that Oppressives.

Political Vanguard: Why Jerry Brown’s Water Plan Isn’t Serious

California’s Problem of Long Standing is a Shock! Shock, I Tell You! to Pols in Sacramento.

Divining Rod - Photo provided by Victoria Taft

In response, our savvy Sacramento swashbuckling legislators have now taken out their mighty divining rods, put their ears to ground, put a wet finger in the air, assessed the political climate and determined that now is the time to rip up our lawns and shorten our showers — or else.

As any 5th grader can tell you, California is comprised of eleven different types of climates which can be simplified into four basic categories: Mediterranean Dry, Look at the Trees, Why Is it So Foggy Here, and, Hella Hot. The Mojave Desert is often the hottest place in the country in the summer. We’re in year four of a drought. But, as Tom Del Beccaro points out here in Forbes, we’re still ‘enjoying’ the wettest century California has had in 7,000 years. In short, the problem is not new.

The question then becomes, what have our elected leaders done about it?

Recently, lawmakers have spent time trying to put Sea World out of business, given money in energy grants to build solar arrays that make birds explode in mid-air — pfft! — incentivized people who aren’t even citizens of California (or the country) to come and receive ‘free’ stuff taken from taxpayers, and planned to spend $68 billion on a slo-mo train to nowhere.

Apparently legislators think money grows on the trees farmers haven’t been forced to rip out in the Central Valley for lack of water.

But instead of pointing at the budget priorities of the state he leads, instead of acknowledging the actual California climate, instead of wagging a reproving forefinger at the environmentalists who have driven the natural resources agenda which diverts water to bait fish over people, Governor Jerry Brown on Sunday blamed something else:

“I can tell you, from California, climate change is not a   hoax. We’re dealing with it, and it’s damn serious.”

Gov. Jerry Brown - Photo Credit Victoria Taft

… said the man who proposed the $68 billion choo choo but killed an $11 billion water storage bill proffered by State Senate Republicans in 2014 because it would ‘break the bank’.

Cue dead pac mac music.

Jerry Brown wants you to believe the cyclical California drought is new-and-worse-than-ever-and-how could he possibly have known?

Let’s go to the tote board where a cursory check of expenditures yields these figures used for water programs in just the last few years:

2006: $660 million (flood diversion)

2014: $870 million

2014: (voters) $7.5 billion (only $2.7b of which would be used for water storage)

2015:  $20 mil from Feds to farmers

2015: $1billion (including for food baskets for workers in the Central Valley who have lost their jobs due to environmentalists succeeding in diverting water it for the restoration of the ‘delta smelt’ and ruining farms.)

People rightly wonder why the expended billions have not resulted in new reservoirs and desalination plants either started or in the pipeline. That’s because water for people, while a basic function of government, has been taken for granted.

Conservationists have done magnificent things to improve air and water quality in California, but as environmental advocacy has turned into Big Green, they’ve also stood in the way of getting water to people. Under environmental law, individuals have standing to bring lawsuits against anything. The environmental review process takes years to navigate and lawsuits add time and expense. The private desalination plant in Carlsbad was subjected to 14 lawsuits, for example. At long last, notwithstanding attempts to kill it by environmentalists, the plant is coming on-line in the fall — just in time to deliver more water to people.

Environmentalists have overseen the removal of 12 dams in the state from through 2014 in an attempt to return rivers back to their wild state, but that also potentially means less water for people.

Government inertia is also responsible for lack of water. While Governor Brown promises he’ll fast-track water projects this time under his executive order, his administration still hasn’t put in motion half the projects from Emergency Drought Relief passed by the legislature last year.

California also loses 10% of its water from leaky pipes, according to state figures. Last week, 82,000 gallons of water spilled from Santa Clarita after a series of earthquakes. Last July, a water main break near UCLA sent 20 million gallons down the drains along Sunset Boulevard.

Conserving water is the right thing to do, of course. I’ve lived in California on-and-off since the 1980’s and conservation efforts have been a part of the message from water departments since then, if not before. This is California, after all.

Short showers, turning off the water while I brush my teeth, re-using dog water to water plants, low flow everything are just part of life for me. I took those habits with me when I moved back to Oregon, where water is plentiful.

But I have a solution to ease the pain for citizens subjected to Brown’s deputizing of the water police to go after lawn waterers, car washers and people with green lawns.  While Brown is ripping up the earth to put in the slo-mo train to nowhere, he can count it against the 50 million square feet of lawns he demanded be ripped out to conserve water.

That’s something at least.

IJR: Elkhart 4 Await Decision Could Toss Enhanced Charges Committed During Felony

Elkhart 4 Teens Committed Home Invasion, One Was Killed. Should Survivors Be Serving 50 Years for Murder?

Any day now, the Indiana Supreme Court will make a decision that could give a reprieve to three teens who were convicted of murder – but who actually never killed anyone.

The teens, known as the “Elkhart 4,” were convicted for the October 2012 murder of their accomplice in a home robbery under Indiana’s Felony Murder law, because the killing occurred during the commission of a felony, which heightens the charges.

The homeowner actually pulled the trigger, but all four surviving robbers, Levi Sparks, Jose Quiroz Jr., Blake Layman, and Anthony Sharp Jr., were given 50-year sentences.

IJR: Oregon Sheriff Explains Why He Won’t Enforce a Proposed Gun Control Measure Even If It’s the Law

The Josephine County, Oregon Sheriff Says He Can’t be Bothered to Enforce the Proposed Law

Sheriff-Dave-Daniel

One of my latest stories from Independent Journal Review:

An Oregon sheriff has voiced opposition to a proposed law that would require a background check on the private sale of guns. So, he just plans to ignore the law if it passes.

The Herald News Tribune reports that Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel repeated his position to a group of gun rights activists, saying the law doesn’t seem in line with the county charter.

Daniel added that the violation would only be a misdemeanor and that budget cutbacks don’t allow him to enforce such low-priority crimes:

GOP HQ in AZ Hit With ‘Primary John McCain’ Posters Over Issue of Open Primary/Closed Meetings

Artists Hit the HQ on North 24th Street in Phoenix After GOP Chair Shuts Doors to Precinct Committee Persons Who Call for a Closed GOP Primary. Effort is seen to help McCain.

‘Eject’ not elect.

John McCain’s battle with the GOP right flank is heating up over the issue of closing the Arizona primary to anyone but registered GOP voters. An executive meeting in Phoenix today has been closed to even GOP Precinct Committee Persons (PCPs).

mccain gop wide

McCain says he wants a ‘big tent’ in the primaries, but the conservatives in the party believe the long time senator is too liberal and want a choice in the primary election.

The Arizona Republic reports the group of McCain detractors believe the Senator wants the open primary to dilute the impact of conservatives:

The bad blood between McCain and many members of the Republican Party’s right wing is legendary. In January 2014, the state GOP formally censured him as too liberal on issues such as immigration reform. Many of McCain’s critics support the push to close the primary, with the suggestion being that the closer-to-center McCain benefits from the independents voting in the Republican primary.

How much a closed GOP primary would hurt McCain is unclear. In 2008, McCain, the eventual GOP White House nominee, was able to effortlessly win Arizona’s Republican-only presidential preference election, or primary.

A group called ‘End the Reign of John McCain’ is behind the effort to close the primary.

Odd, party leaders would close a meeting to discuss the open primary.

IJR: ‘Free Range Kids’ Are Rounded Up and Caged By ‘Parenting Police’ Again in Maryland

They’re planning on filing a lawsuit this time.

free range

Danielle and Alexander Meitiv of Maryland allowed their children to go out and play by themselves, again, and they’re once again in trouble with the law.

Last year the Meitivs let their six year old daughter Dvora and their ten year old son Rafi walk about a mile home by themselves. The Meitivs had to sign a parenting contract before their kids were allowed to go home.

The Washington Post reports that on Sunday police found the children two and a half blocks from their home, put them in the back of the police cruiser and, according to the Meitivs, detained them for nearly six hours without letting them use the bathroom or eat.

IJR: Anti-Gun Group Puts Adult Words in Kids’ Mouths to Cut the NRA Down to Size

Michael Bloomberg’s latest anti gun group uses ‘the children’ again to make a point — but does it work?

gun victoria taft independent journal review

The group ‘Everytown for Gun Safety‘ has produced a new commercial it hopes will cut its prime nemesis — the NRA — down to pint size.

The newest anti-gun group funded by Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg features children reading the words of NRA executive Wayne LaPierre. They call the spot, Lil’ Waynes (LaPierre).

Bloomberg is just the latest to put adult words into children’s mouths in hopes of making a desired target look childish.

IJR: One T Shirt at Coachella Confirms Unfair Stereotypes of ‘Rape Culture’ of Men

Honestly, how do look yourself in the mirror with that shirt on and then go out in public –even at Coachella? coachella-621x330

From my piece at IJReview:

Coachella is a yearly desert music spectacular in California. People — including Hollywood glitterati –come in droves to hear top names in music for two weekends of wall-to-wall sound.

This year’s spectacles included Madonna giving Drake a big long wet kiss, apparently against his will, so you know the crowd can’t be easily offended.

That is, until this guy came along.

IJR: Cuffed, Shackled & Masked and Then Tased

Here’s my piece on this case from Virginia getting a lot of attention to across the country:
natasha

A mentally ill woman, who was to be taken to get treatment, instead ended up dead in a Fairfax, Virginia, hospital.

NBC News 4 reports that Natasha McKenna’s death has spurred a discussion by Fairfax County officials about where obviously mentally ill people should be sent, instead of a jail cell.

Deputies say McKenna, who was in jail for assaulting a police officer, was going to a mental facility for treatment, but grew violent when they attempted to remove her from her cell.

But as The Washington Post reports, Natasha McKenna’s hands were cuffed behind her…
