Oregonians for Immigration Reform

OFIR Members and Friends:

The top, page 1 headline in the Sunday Oregonian today is:

“Illegal immigrants aren’t filling jails; Oregon crime/ Prisoner numbers and types of offenses differ little between legal and illegal residents” by Esmeralda Bermudez.

http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1187412928140140.xml&coll=7 (Headline in online edition differs from headline in print edition.)

The article quotes OFIR Pres. Jim Ludwick, Oregonians for Immigration Reform, pointing out the doubtful validity of figures reported.

An August 11 article, “Jails vary in checks on inmate citizenship,” told of the varying practices in Oregon. http://www.oregonlive.com/oregonian/stories/index.ssf?/base/news/118680452955600.xml&coll=7

According to The Oregonians’ weekly tally of letters to the editors, the most popular topic in letters to The Oregonian between Aug.10-16 was “Immigration reform.” 115 letters were received on this subject. This included responses to Mayor Potter’s opinion column from last Sunday and “the explosion of letters related to the killing of …Dani Countryman. … … Oregonian reporter Steve Mayes appeared on national television to discuss the case. An e-mail campaign orchestrated by a North Carolina political action committee resulted in 60 messages criticizing the illegal immigrants and Mayes. …”

The political action committee referred to is Americans for Legal Immigration PAC. The president of ALIPAC, William Gheen, wrote a good letter to the editor on the case, which was published in The Oregonian on Thursday, August 16: Sex wasn’t consensual.”
