Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
That’s your first amendment to the US Constitution. It’s being broken right now by the Obama Administration which has written into ObamaCare a regulation requiring religious institutions to provide abortifacents, sterilization and birth control in their health insurance. This is in strict conflict with the religious beliefs of most Christians, but is a dagger in the heart of the pro life Catholic Church.

It’s shocking the Obama Administration would have stuck with the plan to place politics over religious freedom, but there it is. Lawmakers of faith from both political parties urged Obama and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to stop but they did not.
After the Catholic Church exploded in anger, the Obama Administration said it would fix this problem by rewriting the regulations but has not done so. It threw a bone to the Catholics by proclaiming they’d just have insurance companies pick up the tab for the health insurance. Insulting though that is, it’s beside the point because the Catholic Church and its various organizations are largely self insured, therefore it’s a distinction without a difference.
After it was clear the Obama Administration had no intention of changing the language of the bill, several large Catholic institutions sued Sebelius and the Obama Administration:
Notre Dame, Franciscan University of Steubenville, and dozens of Catholic hospitals and organizations have filed a total of 12 lawsuits today against Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the Obama administration over the controversial HHS mandate.
The lawsuit challenges the Obama administration’s unprecedented mandate that attacks the freedom to practice religion without government interference. Under the HHS mandate, employers must provide insurance coverage that includes abortion-inducing drugs, as well as contraceptives and sterilization procedures.
Everyone from Occupy to the Tea Party to the ACLU should join with people of faith to oppose this frightening intrusion of government into the lives of its free citizens.
The Obama Administration should be repudiated. Join the rally today at noon at Terry Schrunk Plaza in downtown Portland because you’re next.
