The Yes for Voter-Owned Elections campaign is organizing a volunteer canvass on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Portland. Can you make it?

Hi there,
Like you, I’m a MoveOn member in Portland, and I’m involved in an important local campaign you may have heard about—called “Yes for Voter-Owned Elections.”
Other local MoveOn members have expressed interest, so I wanted to share why I’m personally supporting this campaign and let you know about an upcoming volunteer opportunity this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
When I was taught about voting in school for the first time, I was told the compelling stories of a few historical neck and neck races, where the ballots were counted up at the end of the election period, and an important issue was won by just one vote. One vote! The idea that my one vote, my voice, really could make a difference in history was extremely appealing to me as a kid, and I just couldn’t wait to vote when I turned 18.
Now, that was a long time ago, and it’s plain to see how far we’ve strayed from that ideal as a nation. It’s not to say that one vote can’t make a difference, but it’s more crucial that we take all of those “one votes” and compile them into a powerful force of real people. I say this because now campaigns are often won by corporate dollars—or, not by real people.
Things are different in Portland. Under the Voter Owned Elections program, real people can elect candidates by contributing just $5—rather than candidates having to accept large checks from corporations and big donors.
Are you able to help the “Yes for Voter-Owned Elections” campaign out? Folks are meeting up for a volunteer event to support the campaign on Wednesday, October 13th at 5:30 p.m., at the Tazo Tea Building, 333 SE 2nd Ave. in Portland.

Thanks.
