Oregon Dems Prefer Faux Congressman to Real Rep in Office

The latest revelation about the strange behavior of Oregon Congressman David Wu (here, here, here) provided this hilarious comment from the head of Oregon’s Democrat Party:

“If Congressman Wu is having some problems I hope he gets help,” said Meredith Wood Smith, chair of the state Democratic Party. “I still think that the 1st District is in good hands and that it will continue to be.”

Why do I find this hilarious? For openers, it’s a bitter hilarity. Wu has been saddled with problems for years. He’s a back bencher with a penchant for erratic behavior caused by the rumored abuse of any number of substances. Everyone in his party knows it. But no one, until now, did anything about it, and in fact, waited until he’d safely been reelected to leave. Secondly, how is the district in “good hands” with a drunk who doesn’t show up for work? A guy who has ridden so far off the rails that his own staff called for several interventions for him? A man whose own wife left him because of his problems?
As his kids reportedly put in an email to a Wu staffer,

“My Dad says you’re the best because not even my Mom put up with him for [REDACTED: #] years and you have. We think you’re cool.”

The Dems and their women’s movement buddies gave him a pass when it was revealed Wu had stalked and raped an ex girlfriend while a student at Stanford (here). C’mon, everyone does it! Everyone puts a pillow over the girl’s face so her screams can’t be heard, right? They just wrote it off as a one-off even as rumors swarmed about more outrageous antics. The silence was deafening.

More recently, and even  though the embarrassing pictures showed up in the media of Wu in a tiger suit, Willamette Week reports it was the culmination of many things that caused them to try to intervene:

No single event appears to have prompted staff to conduct the two interventions. Instead, a snowballing series of events in the days before Wu handily defeated GOP challenger Rob Cornilles 55 percent to 42 percent combined to cause staffers to worry about the congressman’s judgment and the possible root cause of his problem, say close observers on Capitol Hill and in Portland.

“Root” problems? Now that’s sad. Wu has been observed drinking while he was supposed to be working on Capitol Hill.

The emails do not offer a definitive account of why Wu’s aides fled the congressman’s office in significant numbers just after his sixth successful re-election campaign. They do reveal that Wu’s staffers apparently had confronted the congressman about his drinking.

But this has been going on for years! Instead of confronting him or ‘primarying’ him, they went along with a drunkard who voted their way. A guy who never improved himself in Congress, remaining a back bencher all these years, was better to the Democrat Party of Oregon than a Congressman who would represent Oregon with dignity.

…employees deliberately hid him from public view during the last three days of Wu’s campaign even as his Republican opponent furiously fought for votes across Oregon’s 1st Congressional District.

The Democrats have been ‘hiding him’ for years. The machine preferred a man who would vote the way they wanted (cap and tax, obamacare, stimulus, ridiculous spending) instead of offering up a candidate who would dignify the position and vote the 1st CD values. They’ve sold out the people of the First Congressional District. They preferred a faux congressman to a dignified, sober statesman. That’s what 1st CD people should know.
