Now recycling is nice and I do it, but confessing environmental “sins” is downright weird. We always knew that environmentalism is like religion but it’s once again affirmed by this story. The helpful aspect of this is that these are the folks who put together the newspaper of record around these parts. (reminder: these are the people we expect to report evenhandedly on the man made global warming hoax). Here’s an example from the story (HERE) from one Oregonian reporter who confessed her environmental virtues and sins

“Good: We:
– rinse and reuse plastic baggies at least 10 times before throwing them away;
– planted two yard trees;
– disconnected our downspouts;
– compost all food waste;
– try to avoid buying overpackaged goods;
– drive a Prius;
– eat largely vegetarian;
– downsized to an 18-gallon trash can– a great way to enforce limits on excessive consumption at the holidays;
– encourage maximum non-gifting and re-gifting rather than buy new stuff;
– ride our bikes to school and back each day, even when it’s wet or cold;
– programmed the thermostat, no longer heat rooms we rarely use;
– rarely take airplane trips.
Bad: I can’t do a single load of white laundry without a full serving of chlorine bleach. It’s like a sick, guilty pleasure of clean in a stinky-socks world.
Another bad: We’ve been too cheap to replace all the beautiful old (leaky) single-pane windows in our 1915 home — even after finding ice on the insides of some of them some mornings. If Portland Sustainability Department were to send me an infrared photo of the heat-leak from said windows (and who knows where else), I would probably drop dead of guilt on the spot. Luckily, neither they (nor Google street view) does anything of the sort.
Another bad: Some days, turning the thermostat up to 71 degrees just feels too good not to do it, even though I was raised much, much better than that.
Another bad: My husband vowed when I met him that he would have no children because overpopulation is the world’s biggest enviro threat; two adorable sons later, I have no regrets about our + 2 to world population.
