This kind of thing has been happening with more frequency. From the WSJ’s Kim Strassel writing about a Romney donor being investigated, the existence of an enemies list (story here and here),
Mr. VanderSloot has since been learning what it means to be on a presidential enemies list. Just 12 days after the attack [via Democrat email hit], the Idahoan found an investigator digging to unearth his divorce records. This bloodhound—a recent employee of Senate Democrats
—worked for a for-hire opposition research firm.Now Mr. VanderSloot has been targeted by the federal government. In a letter dated June 21, he was informed that his tax records had been “selected for examination” by the Internal Revenue Service. The audit also encompasses Mr. VanderSloot’s wife, and not one, but two years of past filings (2008 and 2009).
Now the same thing is happening to the Gallup organization. See this little story from the Daily Caller. :
Since Gallup first roused Axelrod’s ire, Obama’s Justice Department revived old allegations against the firm that, according to now former Gallup employee Michael Lindley, the polling company violated the False Claims Act by over-charging the federal government for its services.In August, Justice signed on to a suit Lindley filed in 2009. Lindley alleged, according to The Associated Press, that Gallup filed false claims with the federal government on contracts it had with the State Department, the U.S. Mint and other federal agencies.Lindley was a field organizer in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for then-Sen. Obama’s 2008 run for president before joining Gallup, a fact omitted from the DOJ’s legal filings and from most press accounts.
In this latest story in the Daily Caller we discover Obama’s campaign manager, David Axelrod, threatened Gallup after an unfavorable poll and then Holder’s Main Justice acted against Gallup. The threat may have been veiled, but its message came through loud and clear via email to the Gallup folks:
In response to that email, a third senior Gallup official said he thought Axelrod’s pressure “sounds a little like a Godfather situation.”“Imagine Axel[rod] with Brando’s voice: ‘[Name redacted], I’d like you to come over and explain your methodology…You got a nice poll there….would be a shame if anything happened to it…’”
There are three things to learn here: 1) As Jonah Goldberg reports in his terrific book, Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning; this is the way of the left governs; 2) This White House makes Nixon look tame, 3) This is not how things are usually done; usually the object of a bad poll mans up and takes his medicine. Not so with the Chicago crowd.
John Dean told the Watergate Commission all those years ago that he’d warned Nixon there was a “cancer upon the Presidency.”
In 2012 we, sadly, can say the same thing.
