The man who refused to call on a child predator to leave office, who claims, “trees have rights,” and who has tirelessly (and illegally it turns out) tried to drive a cop from his job is back in search of meaning again. And it appears the man we call “The Accidental Police Commissioner,”** Dan Saltzman, has found his mojo. He’s hit his groove. Found the sweet spot.
He’s going after cells.
Terrorist cells? Animal rights terrorist cells, you ask?
No. Saltzman is placing his tam o shanter jauntily over his right eyebrow, squaring his shoulders and going big!
He’s going after cell phone users.
During the first of several “education missions” requested by Commisioner Dan Saltzman, Portland police on Monday cited 55 people for violating a two-week-old law prohibiting texting and talking on cell phones while behind the wheel.
Aside from the fact that I think the whole hand held cell phone thing is a big joke (nail people for distracted driving and stop outlawing useful items!), I saw this portion of the story from the Zero,
The citations ran the gamut, from drivers swerving while they talked with the phones up to their ear to a motorist who was caught texting at a stop light.
‘Scuse me, you’re stopped at a red light texting someone and THAT’S AGAINST THE LAW?
C’mon!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: It won’t be long before we’ll be outlawed from doing everything behind the wheel of a car. Second on the hit list: smoking and then down the line somewhere they’ll outlaw listening to the radio.
And here’s something else: the loophole in this law is big enough to drive a truck through. If you’re working while using a hand held cell phone it’s okay. I think a lot of Oregonians are going to be “working” a lot.
**The Accidental Police Commissioner, Saltzman, was given the job because the Mayor had broken the law and couldn’t command the respect of the cops, Randy Leonard was too unpredictable, Nick Fish was too busy smelling flowers in the city parks and Amanda Fritz was caught up in the task of psychoanalyzing all of them.
