I talked with Occupy Portlander Cameron Whitten today about his run for Mayor of Portland. Hear our conversation on the Victoria Taft Show in Thursday’s 2pm hour here. See my previous post about him here.

But as I caution in my previous piece, WHERE Cameron decides to house his new election HQ is an issue. Since Occupy Portland or De-Colonize Portland or whatever they’re branding it this week is housed in St. Francis Church–home of the Che Guevarra meeting room–it’s illegal to do candidate advocacy from a house of worship.

And as you hear at the end of our interview Cameron says that’s exactly where his HQ is located.

But here’s what Blogforce member and attorney Bruce McCain says about Cameron using Occupy’s/De-Colonize Portland’s HQ for his elections office.

Here is the IRS bulletin about church property used for political purposes. It certainly sounds like the church is involved in “Political Campaign Intervention.”
“Allowing a candidate to use an organization’s assets or facilities will also violate the prohibition if other candidates are not given an equivalent opportunity…”
