Romney Ditches Oregon Debate

The guy who has the most delegates just ditched the nationally televised Republican Presidential debate scheduled for next week in Portland.

Mitt Romney announced early tonight he’d spend his time trolling for votes in Illinois on the eve of that state’s primary instead of coming to Oregon.

So far Newt Gingrich is the only one on board for the March 19th event. It’s doubtful public broadcasting will clear 90 minutes of air time for the Newt Gingrich Show.

Did you really think this debate would come off without a hitch? First, It’s  pretty late in the cycle and fairly far removed from Oregon’s primary in May.  We weren’t sure there would be anyone left TO debate due to the winnowing of the pool of candidates. Sure, the last time there were two or more candidates this late in the race was in 2008 with Hillary and Obama, but that’s not the norm.

Oregon’s Republican Party leader, Allen Alley, had worked with OPB and the Washington Times to bring a debate to Portland. It probably won’t come off but we can always hope.

Oregon’s vain search for Republican relevance continues.
