Vancouver City Council Primary Race Update

As of 3:06;

Pat Campbell 5,067 31.32%.
Bill Turlay 5,599 34.61%.
Anne McEnerny-Ogle 5,382 33.27%.

The Columbian is now reporting, “Vancouver City Councilor Pat Campbell has been ousted from the general election by his two primary opponents, second-day election returns released Wednesday afternoon show.”

County Elections Supervisor Tim Likness says, “Only about 350 more ballots are expected to roll in countywide, of which about two-thirds will include the Vancouver race. It’s not likely Campbell can make up the difference. That one is basically over.”

Council member Bart Hansen will face Josephine Wentzel as will Larry Smith face Cory Barnes in November.

Bill Turlay and Anne McEnerny-Ogle will face each other.

Obama’s Magical Misery Tours Carbon Footprint.

Amateur video of Obama’s Canadian built armored buses and the complete motorcade driving by a Ford dealership.

I can’t help but wonder just how much fossil fuel was wasted and pollutants were emitted from the tail pipe of both buses, all of those Police Cars, SUVs and other assorted vehicles in the procession, just so Obama could try to appear as if he actually cared about Americans.

Fox News reports, “Obama is barnstorming the heartland to boost U.S. jobs in a taxpayer-financed luxury bus the government had custom built — in Canada…”

From the looks of the motorcade, it appears he is boosting jobs,,,,,, for Saudi Oil Workers.

Can We Beat 18.7% Unemployment. No. Oregon’s REAL Unemployment is 19.6%

Yesterday I discussed with you (HERE) the need for the Work Source Oregon folks (the nice name for the unemployment office) to reveal to us what the REAL unemployment rate is. In advance of yesterday’s unemployment news conference I sent some questions to them and they kindly offered to oblige. Here are the questions:

Please characterize the unemployment situation in Oregon. Is it worse than the recession of the 80’s? Better?
How many people were on the sidelines or had given up looking for work in the 80’s versus now?
Explain what the U-6 unemployment rate is and what that number is in Oregon.  Is it an improvement?
After construction, what job sectors have seen the biggest hit in Oregon?

The U-6 unemployment rate reveals the people who at one time were looking for work but who have given up, the underemployed and the barely hanging on employed. July’s number was 19.5%. That means nearly 20% of Oregon’s work eligible are not working to their potential or at all.

I don’t have the info on when the government started keeping track of all stratum of unemployment U-1-U-6 although I believe it to be since 1994. How they kept the stats during the Great Depression is therefore obviously different than the way we keep track now. I looked up (again) the unemployment rates during the Great Depression on a Wiki (here):

The unemployment rate for the years 1923-29 was 3.3 percent. In 1931 it jumped to 15.9, in 1933 it was 24.9 percent. It remained at these extremely high levels until 1942, when it dropped to 4.7 percent.

The unemployment rate as you can see worsened after the FDR alphabet programs and only got better with the advent of war.

Clark County Early Primary Results.

Clark County Election Results

Early results show Vancouver City Council member Pat Campbell trailing behind both of his challengers, Bill Turlay and Anne McEnerny-Ogle. Turlay has 34.44% of the votes to McEnerny-Ogle’s 33.60%. A very close race. Pat Campbell sits at 31.11%. If this holds, both challengers will advance to the general election in November in what appears will be a very close race then between the two.

All of the Washougal incumbent council members will advance to the general.

Clark County Emergency Medical Service District #1 Proposition No. 1 is passing in a large way with 78.38% of the votes.
Many north of the river feel Pat Campbell might be losing due to his staunch support for the Light Rail project, both Turlay and McEnerny-Ogle taking a more conciliatory tone in pledging to listen to citizen’s as to whether or not the community wishes light rail. Both support replacing the I-5 Bridge. Campbell also voted to close the Fire Station over objections of citizens.
Late votes still have to be counted, so the races aren’t being called just yet.
