Army Spc. Alexander Bennett, 23, had earned a reputation for his pranks on Marines and soldiers, the Sacramento Bee reports. After a 2009 deployment in Iraq, he moved from the Tacoma, Wash., area to Overland Park, Kansas, to be a flight mechanic. Friend Jessica Hall told KOMO-TV in Seattle that the 2005 Foss High School graduate had always wanted to be in the Military “I never met somebody that loved to do something as much as he did,” Hall said. “He was so selfless.”
See the photo album (here) of all the men who died over the weekend in Afghanistan when Taliban used an apparently souped up RPG to bring down their chopper. The special operators had been called in to help some Army Rangers pinned down by enemy fire.
Joe the Small Business Owner adds his condolences:
Dear Bennett Family:
My son was a United States Marine. He came home to us, but I want to thank you personally, and offer my heart felt condolences on the loss of your son. It is a rare quality these young men and women of our military have in order to defend the freedoms of many, put their life on the line and all too often that fight takes it. I believe the world is a better place because of the sacrifice these people make in order to defend freedom for men and women all over the world. Nothing will erase the loss of this mans and the others who also perished, but it does matter, and it is the ultimate sacrifice. I wish I had the power to bring him and all like him back, but unfortunately I do not. So, with that being said, please accept a moment of great pride, and personal gratitude, and heartfelt sympathy in knowing that some of us in the world are touched by this sacrifice, and only hope that some day this sacrifice may not be necessary. My family and I salute you and him, and say thank you for our gift of freedom. We honor you and thank you, in your saddest moments.
