The Heritage Foundation has performed an invaluable service to those who take the U.S. Constitution seriously by launching a new website that presents it and explains it all in one place.
Rarely am I impressed by anything, but the website blew me away. From Preambleto the most recent but little known 27thAmendment on congressional compensation ratified 20 years ago, the entire Constitution is presented
together with article-by-article, and sometimes sentence-by-sentence, essays by leading legal scholars from across the country analyzing what the text says, what the Framers intended and how the courts interpret the text today.
I mean really – how many out there know what a Bill of Attainder is (it’s addressed here too – together with banning ex post facto laws, the only instance in the original document where a specific prohibition against the infringement of liberty is extended to both the federal and state governments)? Or the current interpretation of the Full Faith and Credit clause?
For those of us who read the Constitution for pleasure, this is a godsend. It will also be incredibly useful in debunking those who claim to know what the Constitution says, but who really haven’t a clue – they’re called progressives.
