BEND, OR — Every year, more than 500 people in Oregon take their own lives, while another 1,800 attempt suicide, a rate 33% higher that the national average. Oregon Public Health said over the past five years, the number of middle-aged women committing suicide has increased, even though men are almost four time more likely than women to take their own lives. Lisa Millet with OPH said the figures run through 2006, just priory to the onset of the recession.
“When you look at economic issues as a stressor, they may not be a direct risk factor in terms of causing suicidal behavior or acute depressive bouts. They may definitely be a contributing factor.”
