Gov. Kitzhaber and his “Early Learning Council”  Chairwoman Pam Curtis have announced “big ideas” which include the “screening of all Oregon babies at birth, 9 months,18 months, and age three to detect whether they are reaching milestones,” according to the Oregonian (Feb. 6, 2012, page 1).  

 

This “big idea” includes all children, and all parents,  even where there is no evidence of risk to the child.  Just how will this be enforced against parents who object?

 

Will physicians be required to submit your child’s medical records to the government?  If you fail to bring your child to the “screening,” will you be fined, jailed, or will they remove your child to a foster home? The idea that you and your child will have no doctor/patient privilege, or right of privacy, is certainly a “big idea.”

 

Will social workers be poking their noses into your home to “screen” your child, and make sure you are getting all government services whether you want them or not?

 

Gov. Kitzhaber and Pam Curtis certainly have a “big idea”—throw out the 4^th Amendment, go into every home with a child under three  to “screen” every child. 

And if a parent resists, what will be the consequences? Will they fine you; jail you; or take away your child?
