Exodus Without Budget

The Washington State legislature got out of town last night and the reason for the exodus was because they’re being called right back. It seems as if the Legislature can tinker with most things but just not the budget that they’re, by law, required to tinker with.

For instance, as we noted here, the Legislature made a move to ban certain kinds of wood stoves the government cossacks don’t like, but they couldn’t approve a budget.

The Governor trotted out a complete non sequitur having to do with same sex marriage, but they couldn’t approve a budget.

From The Columbian,

Gov. Chris Gregoire has called for a special session as the Washington state Legislature prepared to adjourn without passing a supplemental budget plan.
Gregoire said late Thursday night that she has asked lawmakers to return to the Capitol Monday.
Her announcement came minutes before the deadline, midnight Thursday, to officially close out the regular 60-day legislative session after several hours of speculation about whether Senate Democrats would try to vote on the budget House Democrats passed earlier in the evening. That plan, an agreement between House and Senate Democrats, keeps in place a delayed payment to schools that Senate Republicans said ensured its failure in the Senate.

Ultimately, Senate Democrats decided to not take up the budget Thursday night.
