Steyn: The Culture War Now Includes Size of Government

I’d appreciate any comments (Moderated. Sorry) you may have on these statements from Chapter Two of Mark Steyn’s new book, After America: Get Ready for Armageddon.

“In the Nineties, the “culture wars” were over “God, guns and gays. The overreach of the statists has added a fourth G: Government itself is now a front in the culture war, and a battle of the most primal kind. Is the United States a republic of limited government with a presumption in favor of individual liberty? Or is it just like any other western nation in which a permanent political class knows what’s best for its subjects” In California, the people can pass a ballot proposition against gay marriage, but a single activist judge overrules them. In Arizona, the people’s representatives vote to uphold the people’s laws, bu a pliant judge strikes them down at Washinton’s behest. It is sure only a matter of time before some federal judge find the Constitution unconstitutional.”

…It is never a good idea to send the message, as the political class now does consistently, that there are democratic means by which the people can restrain their rules. As the (Democrat) pollster Pat Cadell pointed out, the logic of that is “pre-revolutionary.”

…Behind the legislators ar ethe judges, behind the judges the regulatory bureaucracy, and behind the bureacracy the union muscle: left, lefter, leftest.”

When you see what’s going on in the two cases Steyn cited and in Wisconsin with union thugs crashing schools to mess up a Gov. Scott Walker visit, citizens WITH THE FACTS ON THEIR SIDE being gaveled down in Vancouver, the ATF setting up a phony website against school reformers (see Politico today), and how Our Oregon is now lying –openly!–about the Clackamas County citizens fighting for the right to vote on millions for light rail and urban renewal, you see how the situation has metastasized here. We’re in the middle of it. The fight is here.

Tell ’em where you saw it. Http://www.victoriataft.com
