Sam Adams: No Confidence from Police Association

The Police Officers Association has asked Sam Adams to resign. Sam said he’d take a pass on that.
The news conference was quite a show. In 14 years or so that I’ve been back in the People’s Republic , I’ve never seen that many reporters at City Hall. Arrayed against one wall was the contingent from the Zero. Better late than never, I guess. Anna Griffin, David Sarasohn, Jeff Mapes, Steve Duin, Jack Ohman (no idea why) were there to take stock of the proceedings. They got there late and left early (and, as I suspected, got a private meeting with Sam).
The most bizarre questions came from the Indy Media guy (rocking a Barack Obama button) next to the POA secretary.
At one point Mr. Indy Media asked Sam if he’d like to apologize to Amanda Fritz. The rest of us learned why he singled her out when she strode from the wings to the podium and proceeded to tell us that she’d been a psychiatric nurse for 26 years and that people lie all the time and give the guy a break and you’re really screwing up Barack Obama’s inauguration and doggone it why did you break the story now. Silence. Then some courageous (or did I mean comedic) scribe from behind a camera asked, “was there a better day to do this?”

I went to Randy Leonard’s office to get his reaction. Randy’s been Sam’s aide de camp in so many wrong headed ideas and I’d heard that Leonard wanted an “investigation” into the incident that I thought I’d better talk to him.
Aside from the fact that Randy called him “Big Love” as opposed to his name “Breedlove,” (“Aw, what’s the difference?”) he was cranky that Adams had lied to him. Randy wasn’t upset that Sam had apparently been grooming a kid to have sex with, he was upset that Sam had asked the kid to lie. I asked the obvious (I thought) question about the appropriateness and morality of the situation, you know, as a father, and he went off about how it’s immoral that 18 year olds go off to Iraq to serve their country. For Randy apparently a kid willing to serve his country is the same as a kid willing to service the mayor.

Sam says there may be a time when he would consider resigning. That time is not now according to him.
