South Carolina lawmakers have defeated a measure to impeach and oust governor Mark Sanford due to his summertime tryst and his use of state aircraft.

Lawyers described the conduct as “morally reprehensible” but not impeachable.

A District Judge said that although his behavior was boorish and offensive it did not meet the necessary standards.

The accused said, “I know that my public comments and my silence about this matter gave a false impression. I misled people, including even my wife. I deeply regret that.”

After the vote for non-impeachment he said, “Now that the Senate has fulfilled its constitutional responsibility, bringing this process to a conclusion, I want to say again to the people how profoundly sorry I am for what I said and did to trigger these events and the great burden they have imposed on the on the people.”

Oh wait, sorry, those were Bill Clinton, not Mark Sanford.

Oh well, I guess what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Too bad, we used to hold officials to a moral standard before that.
