Since there will be another big fight over the Bush tax breaks for the rich before the next election, it’s especially important that we thank representatives who voted to end these millionaire tax giveaways. Can you write a letter to the editor thanking Rep. Wu for voting no?

Dear MoveOn member,

Thursday night, the House of Representatives passed the deal to extend the Bush tax breaks for the rich. The bill now goes to President Obama’s desk to be signed into law.
The good news is that your member of Congress, Representative David Wu, stood tall and voted no.1 And since this issue will come up again in just two years, the campaign to stop the next millionaire tax bailout starts now.
The first key step on our strategy is to make sure that Democrats who stood strong get positive media coverage in their districts.
Can you send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to thank Rep. Wu for voting against extending the Bush tax breaks for the rich? Our letter to the editor tool makes sending a letter easy—click the link below to get started:
Members of Congress pay close attention to letters to the editor so they can keep up with what voters are talking about back home. And it’s also a great chance to persuade other readers that Rep. Wu did the right thing.
Here are a few points you can use in your letter:

  • This debate showed who’s really on our side. Republicans held hostage the middle class and unemployed in order to get a millionaire tax bailout for their rich friends.
  • The Bush tax breaks have been on the books for eight years, and since then we’ve seen nothing but job losses. Tax breaks for the rich don’t create jobs or help the economy.2
  • The deal has not one but TWO millionaire bailouts. The deal will slash the estate tax, also known as the “Paris Hilton tax.” This second bailout will give a gigantic tax giveaway to a few thousand of the richest families in the country and add hundreds of billions to the national debt.3
  • In addition to cutting income taxes for the rich, the bill threatens Social Security by lowering the payroll tax, which funds Social Security. Republicans have been coming after Social Security for years, and this cut is the biggest threat to the program in decades.4
The political fallout of this fight will have a big impact on the next debate over the Bush tax breaks for the rich two years from now. So we need to make sure that Rep. Wu is applauded back home in the local papers. Can you send a letter to the editor to thank Rep. Wu?
Thanks for all you do.
