Expect it to Happen Here: Coyotes Move in to Abandoned House; City Says "Live With It"

It was bad enough when the Portland Audubon Society declared that coyotes were simply part of the “urban landscape” and we’d just have to learn how to live with them.  As a result there’s little political will to trap or kill the mangy kurs that will eventually become so enured with this area that they’ll probably start getting section 8 housing.

With so many coyotes part of the “urban landscape” it’s just a matter of time before they begin to hunt toddlers playing outside (happens in California!) and eat more of beloved pets (two cats gone!)

And that brings me to today’s story of stupid public officials bending over backwards for killer coyotes.

The scene is an abandoned house in a more rural section of Glendale, California. The million+ dollar homes in this ‘hood are occupied by well heeled folks and some of the Hollywood crowd. Child star and America’s Best Dance Crew host, Mario Lopez lives there.
The house was abandoned after a fire. It’s due to be razed soon, but in the meantime a new family has moved in. A mama coyote and her band of happy, cherubic babies!
From the San Jose Mercury News:

“They act like they own the place, which they kind of do,” said Michael Hunt, who sees four coyotes lounging in his yard nearly every day. “They’re all over the neighborhood.”

Hunt said he uses an air-horn to scare off the coyotes, but that they come back moments later. He’s worried the animals will eventually claim the area as
their territory and will attack his dog and 13-year-old daughter.

Cathy Molloy, who lives next to the burned-out home, took a video of seven coyotes in her yard.
“This is not normal,” she said.

Glendale’s Mayor says,

“Coyotes are an issue all over Los Angeles, so it’s just something people in Los Angeles have to live with and have to learn to live with.”

And then you wonder: how did this chick get elected? Especially after this comment:

“In general we do not trap or kill coyotes unless they’ve proven to be a danger. These coyotes are very docile. They haven’t been threatening or attacked people.”

Gee, I fee so much better. This is calibre of critical thinkers getting elected these days.
We’re not sure what must happen before a coyote is considered threatening, but count me as part of the club that thinks shacking up next door in a neighborhood counts.
