Compost This: All This Hassle for a Lousy 8%?

As the Statists at Portland City Hall march on toward even more intrusion into our lives–see latest on the food scrap composting plan–(here, here, here, here)  you have to wonder why they’re doing it.

Who knows how many millions will be wasted getting people to recycle more of their stuff. I know my garbage rates are going up for less garbage service! The compost plan calls for garbage pick up twice a month now instead of four times. I pay more but my garbage pick up is halved. Meantime I get to scrape a bunch of food waste off plates and stick it into a government assigned composter which will be placed upon my counter.

Many Portlanders already compost, recycle and reuse. So why the increased –and costly–change by City busy bodies? This:

This proposed curbside collection service changes are in line with the City of Portland’s Climate Action Plan goals. City Council adopted it in 2007, challenging Portlanders to recycle 75 percent of their waste by 2015. The addition of food scraps to the green compost roll cart and every-other-week garbage collection are the next steps in implementing the plan. Portland’s current recycling rate is 67 percent.

That’s right: all this hassle to get our recycling rate from 67% to 75%. Or else. And as an added bonus you get to pay more.

Could somebody please talk to these folks about mission creep? Aren’t these the same folks who objected to the G4-3 listening into convos by terrorists? What about government sitting on my counter? Do these folks have a problem with that.
