The left certainly loves to lament the loss of manufacturing jobs in the America, and indeed I’d love to see more jobs in that sector here, but I wonder: if we got those jobs back again would those same democrats still be in favor of paying people to sit on their butts at home and be soap opera watchers?
It’s clear that the answer is yes for we learn today that fully 35% of Americans get their paychecks from a welfare program.
You heard me. 35%. Source here.

Even as the economy has recovered, social welfare benefits make up 35 percent of wages and salaries this year, up from 21 percent in 2000 and 10 percent in 1960, according to TrimTabs Investment Research using Bureau of Economic Analysis data.

The chief reason, of course, is the dismantling of the welfare reform act of 1996 which was a smashing success in getting people to give something back for their welfare payments. This was blown up in the democrats’ stimulus bill. Nancy Pelosi and President Obama’s own budget director have made the ridiculous assertion that for every dollar spent on government programs there is a $1.50 multiplier in the economy. Government transfers aren’t economic growth and this certainly puts the lie to that assertion.

“The U.S. economy has become alarmingly dependent on government stimulus,” said Madeline Schnapp, director of Macroeconomic Research at TrimTabs, in a note to clients. “Consumption supported by wages and salaries is a much stronger foundation for economic growth than consumption based on social welfare benefits.”
