Protesters to Strickland: ‘Snitches Get Stitches’

Mike Strickland goes on trial for his freedom this morning for unholstering his legal, licensed and concealed handgun at protesters who had already assaulted him and were rushing him to do more harm.

The trial before Judge Thomas Ryan will be in room 406 starting at 8:30. Katharine “Kate” Molina is the deputy district attorney prosecuting him.

As I explained in my last post about this case, Strickland covered protests for years and watched how the leftists had grown even more violent.

Citizen journalists, live streamers and traditional journalists received this missive from protesters during the November riots:

The message included:

DON’T SNITCH EVER.
CONSIDER THIS A WARNING

The message was, if you cover this event you’ll be hurt.

Four months before this overt threat was sent to the media by protesters, Strickland had already arrested, jailed and awaiting trial for pulling his gun to hold back-out-of-control anarchists converging on him.

But Strickland already had a healthy respect for the violent nature of some of the people.

Watch what happened to him in November of 2012 at a post-Occupy Portland event. You’ll recognize many of the same faces from Occupy and present day protests, as he noted on his news platform “Laughing at Liberals”:

Occupy Portland holds their N3 rally and march against “austerity”. At the end of the march, several protestors gather near cameraman and berate him, yell at him through a megaphone, then, finally, shove him through the circle of people who had surrounded him. This was all triggered by one of them shouting “snitches get stitches” at the cameraman.

Several of the people who took part in this escapade are regulars in other videos and media. Jesse Sponberg, Mario Javier David Haro (Mario Haro), Ibrahim Mubarak, and Richie Hernandez. Also present are International Workers of the World members and other union members.

They encircled Strickland, pushed and threatened him. Note their use of the word ‘snitch’:

And things have just gotten worse.

Last October, one of the anarchists who is a “victim” in the Strickland case, helped take over City Hall. Ben Kerensa is in the first seconds of this video. He’s the large man on the left:

Portland Police Bureau cops eventually threw out the protesters which was a rare show of force by them:

As you’ll see in the video above, a television news photographer was roughed up and two cops went down in the fray.

KOIN-TV reports that several people were arrested.

And look, “victim” in the Strickland case, Ben Kerensa, was among those arrested…again:

After the initial clash, protesters moved into the street and blocked traffic, including MAX and TriMet buses, but police were called to clear the street.

Some protesters defied police orders and 10 were arrested after the police cleared the street. Three were booked into the Multnomah County jail while the others were cited and released Wednesday.

Jonny Perez, 23, booked for assaulting a public safety officer, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and interfering with emergency response

Robert Lee West, 51, booked for coercion, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct

Sarabeth Rachel Long, 38, booked for coercion, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct

David Kif Davis, 44, cited for disorderly conduct and interfering with a public safety officer

Hallie Bernhof, 20, cited for disorderly conduct and criminal trespass

Carlton Smith, 43, cited for disorderly conduct

Henrick De-Savy, 21, cited for resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and interfering with a public safety officer

James Mattox, 27, cited for disorderly conduct and interfering with a public safety officer

Frank Martinez Jr., 24, cited for resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and interring with a public safety officer

Benjamin Kerensa, 32, cited for theft

In November, again after Strickland was awaiting his felony trial to start and had already been stripped of his method of making a living, the protesters showed their true colors again.

Protesters again went berserk and rioted through the streets of Portland. A protester was shot by a fellow protester.

The Oregon GOP accused City Hall of “dereliction of duty” by failing to enforce the law and, in so doing, endanger Portlanders. They demanded the resignation of outgoing mayor Charlie Hales for letting violent protesters take over the streets.

Residents took matters into their own hands. This woman, whose car was being blocked by protesters, got out and used the only weapon she had available–laundry detergent–to get a black bloc anarchist out of her way.

Police had a hands-off approach–just as they had during the July protest in which Strickland had been assaulted and converged on by the usual anarchist suspects.

Among other assaults he was hit with the black bloc flag pols as this frequent Portland protester and anarchist demonstrates:

And it was at this point that local television station, KGW-TV, declared it had had enough.

After their TV cameraman was injured, KGW-TV made an announcement on its Facebook page that it would cover protests at a distance from now on:

Posted by KGW-TV on Saturday, November 12, 2016

The post said:

After protests turned violent the last several nights, including vandalism and one person getting shot, KGW is taking a new approach to covering violent protests. Our journalists and others in the media have been injured and gassed covering these protests.
We don’t want our people or anyone else to get injured in these riots. That’s why we’ve decided to cover violent confrontations from a safe distance. We will also think long and hard about what we put on air and online.
We also are committed to including you in our reporting process. How do you think we should cover protests? Does media coverage encourage violent people in the crowds? Let us know in the comments.

Portland Police confirmed the attack:

And, at that point, another guy who covers the protests, Mike Bivins, admitted that he’d been threatened too:

Now that you’re finally learning what Strickland had known for all these years about the violent tendencies of the protesters, you’re probably thinking ‘why cover them at all?’

Nobody asked the traditional news media that question, so why would Strickland cease covering the protests?

It’s his right to cover them. He also had a right to protect himself from them for which he now faces more than 50 years in prison.

Stay here for trial updates.

Rees Lloyd: Four Chaplains Day February 3rd

This is the yearly reminder from Blogforce member Rees Lloyd:

February 3 every year is ““Four Chaplains Day” in America by the unanimous resolution of the U.S. Congress in 1988, although millions of Americans are unaware of that fact, or unaware entirely of the “Four Immortal Chaplains,” whose extraordinary courage, self-sacrifice, and heroism, and should resonate, and be honored, through generations of Americans.

Will they be remembered on Four Chaplains Day 2009? Will the media report their inspiring story? Will teachers charged with educating our young allow them to learn of these great, humble, American heroes, men of faith who gave their lives so others might live?

On February 3, 1943, during World War II, the U.S.S. Dorchester, a converted luxury cruise ship, was transporting Army troops to Greenland On board were some 900 troops, and four chaplains, of different faiths, but common dedication.

The four Chaplains are:Rev. George Fox (Methodist); Father John Washington (Roman Catholic); Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode; and Rev. Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed).

At approximately 12:55 a.m., in the dead of a freezing night, the Dorchester was hit by a torpedo fired by German U-boat 233 in an area so infested with German submarines it was known as “Torpedo Junction.”

The blast ripped a hole in the ship from below the waterline to the top deck.

Many troops were scalded to death below decks; others leaped into the freezing waters to save themselves. More than two-thirds of the troops died; many who survived, had lifelong disabilities from their time in the freezing waters.

In the chaos, the Four Chaplains worked together to aid the troops, and then made the ultimate sacrifice. As one survivor testified: “I saw all four chaplains take off their life belts and give them to soldiers who had none.”

Another soldier testified: “The ship started sinking…I looked back and saw the chaplains with their hands clasped, praying for the boys. They never made any attempt to save themselves, but they did try to save the others. I think their names should be on the list of ‘The Greatest Heroes’ of this war.”

The Four Chaplains went to their deaths together, their arms linked, praying together, singing hymns together, giving their lives for God, country, and the troops they served, setting an example of heroism and self-sacrifices for the ages.

On February 7, 1954, as author William J. Federer records in his book, “America’s God And Country; Encyclopedia of Quotations” (and see his www.AmericanMinute.com), President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had been Supreme Allied Commander in World War II, remarked:

“And we remember that, only a decade ago, aboard the transport Dorchester, four chaplains of four faiths together willingly sacrificed their lives so that four others might live. In the three centuries that separate the Pilgrims of the Mayflower from the chaplains of the Dorchester, America’s freedom, her courage, her strength, and her progress have had their foundation in faith. Today as then, there is need for positive acts of renewed recognition that faith is our surest strength, our greatest resource.”

May we Americans remember and honor these American heroes, and their exemplary sacrifice, on this and every February 3, “Four Chaplains Day.”

Violent Protesters Show EXACTLY Why Strickland Carried Gun to Cover Protests

Mike Strickland goes on trial for his freedom on Monday in a Multnomah County courtroom. For drawing his weapon in self defense at a group of anarchists converging on him at a July Black Lives Matter/Don’t Shoot PDX protest, he faces more than 50 years in prison.

Strickland drew his weapon at the marauding group of anarchists because they had previously hit him, roughed him up, and hit him with their anarchist flag poles while he covered the protest for his news platform known as “Laughing With Liberals.”

Strickland has a reputation with Portland protesters. As I explained in my previous post, the Portland protesters and their anarchist black bloc members don’t like him because he makes fun of them with his videos.

Some people have asked why he would have carried his legally purchased, properly licensed concealed handgun with him to a work project.

You need not go far to find out why. Protests and protesters have grown more violent.

As we saw this week at UC Berkeley, people who protested Milo Yiannopolous, a gay, conservative speaker and journalist set things on fire and beat people who came to hear the speaker.

Protesters on the campus that gave birth to the free speech movement succeeded in shutting down his speech due to their violence.

One of the violent protesters worked at the University.

One woman who came to hear the speech was pepper sprayed while doing a live interview on ABC-7:

She told ABC-7 that the protesting anarchists hit her with their flag poles:

Kiara Robles said after that incident she was targeted again. “They hit you with flag poles, they hit all my friends with flag poles,” she said. “I had to jump over a fence. If they wanted to do some serious damage to me in that moment I would have been completely unable to stop them.

This is what Strickland says happened to him during the protest before the anarchist broke away converged on him.

On that day in July in Portland, these were among the protesters carrying the anarchist flags:

Anyone who’s seen any of Strickland’s reports from May Day protests in Seattle know how violent these protests have been.

In the last week, a Seattle protester called on fellow protesters to “start killing people.” See the video of her speech and the story about it I did for IJR.com here.

In November in Portland, a protester who had been part of a squad of “protesters looting, vandalizing and tagging” shot another protester on the Morrison Bridge. See Cameron Whitten’s real-time play-by-play of the incident.

People who routinely cover protests in addition to Strickland were at the November protests. Their lives were threatened — by those “peaceful” protesters again.

Huh, committing acts of violence against journalists … And since they’d already done it to Strickland and got him arrested, you’d better believe the message was heard loud and clear.

Last weekend, KOIN-TV caught on tape as a couple’s car was surrounded and prevented from moving by Portland protesters–among them, one of those who had converged on Strickland back in July, Ben Kerensa:

At that same protest, a street preacher who was reportedly following protesters was assaulted and sent to the hospital.

The assaulter who did it? Frequent protester and activist, Jesse Sponberg. Sponberg admitted his assault on video:

KATU reports:

Sponberg posted a video, claiming he’s the one who punched Chisholm. The news was first reported by KATU’s news partners at Willamette Week.
“They are violent bullies who had gone too far, with nobody else stopping them from creating another violent situation,” Sponberg said. “Either way, I’m going to need a good lawyer.”
Sponberg turned himself in to Port of Portland Police Thursday afternoon.

Ironically, Sponberg was one who tried to keep things peaceful after Strickland’s assault and pulling his weapon. He was temporarily put in handcuffs with Strickland because the police thought he might be part of the problem. Imagine that.

Mike Strickland had the book thrown at him and pulled his gun in self-defense against violent protesters.

People are getting sick and tired of their freedom of movement restricted by these thuggish protesters.

Recently, one fed up woman grabbed whatever she had in her car and ran out to chase away an anarchist. Her weapon? Laundry detergent.

Republicans have called out the city’s leadership for “dereliction of duty” for its failure to reign in out-of-control protests.

Some of these protesters have been paid to hit the streets, clog up traffic and commit acts of violence. I outline this here.

The same people paying them are of the same political bent as the political bosses running the levers of power in Portland–including the DA’s office.

Sponberg was seen committing the assault but, as of this posting, has not been charged with a crime.

The same people in power arrested, jailed, threw the book at and are putting on trial a man who tried to defend himself from these same violent protesters when police were nowhere in sight. And he might go to prison for 50+ years.

A motion for a change of venue in Strickland’s trial was denied.

‘He Makes Fun of Us:’Reason Why Anarchists Conspired to Attack Strickland at Portland Protest

Mike Strickland will go on trial on Monday in a Portland, Oregon courtroom for pulling a gun in self defense as a group of anarchists converged upon him while he covered a Black Lives Matter/Don’t Shoot PDX protest on July 7th.

The prosecution has relied upon the testimony of some of the very same people who were converging on Strickland to come up with its 21 count indictment against the journalist.

The prosecution has relied upon hearsay testimony of at least one of their members that somehow Strickland was a “white nationalist.” This was used to keep him in jail longer after his arrest and raise his bail.

The allegation appears to come from Strickland’s coverage of the Portland Community College “Whiteness Conference” which made national news, thanks to the Portland journalist.

But who are these people converging on Strickland? And why do people, who have watched Strickland cover their events over a period of years, now conclude somehow that he’s racist or a bad actor?

I’ll tell you why. They’re upset that the man who runs the social media outpost, “Laughing at Liberals” makes fun of them.

During my interviews with several anarchists over the past few months (interviews which will be rolled out later) it came down to this school yard complaint that they didn’t like the way “Laughing at Liberals” held up the mirror and made them look stupid.

It’s just that simple.

When given a chance by the DA to get back at Strickland they seized upon it. And the DA listened.

This is justice? Hearsay complaints about a guy who hurt your feelings? Converging on the guy who hurt your feelings? And then lying to put him in jail?

I spoke to Penny Okamoto of Ceasefire Oregon, an anti-gun rights group which Strickland covered often. Strickland’s arrest confirmed her fears. She told me she thought he was somehow dangerous but couldn’t tell me why. She complained about how he covered her events, how he sometimes mocked her group, but could not name one time in which Strickland was dangerous.

She has the ear of the DA.

As one professional protester told me, anarchists conspired to ‘get’ Strickland last July 7th:

“There were a bunch of people from Anonymous that walked around and who said they were going up ‘contact’ him walked and all of a sudden I seen him come out of the protest with a group of people behind him. There was yelling back and forth.

Basically [Strickland] was yelling, ‘Stay away from me, stay away from me!’

I believe there were threats toward him.

He’s someone that a lot of activists don’t like.”

I asked why they didn’t like him:

“It goes all the way back to Occupy. He’ll talk about and make fun of protests like that. That’s what people talk about with him. They say he’s an agitator. That if there’s a protest then he’ll find something to make fun of.”

Ben Kerensa came after ‘Occupy.’ So what was his beef with Strickland?

This:

This video was produced after 340,000 plus people looked at another of Strickland’s posts:

They saw Kerensa in the background and couldn’t help note the obvious, that it isn’t necessary for Kerensa to cover his face as an anarchist because he’s the only one who looks like that at Portland protests:

When I talked to the anarchists for an upcoming series of reports, they said it was this video that got Kerensa riled up.

For the record, they thought it was funny.

Is it nice? No. Is it a reason to beat someone up? No. Is it illegal? No.

The night Strickland pulled his gun, Kerensa boasted that he made him to do it.

And Monday, Strickland goes on trial for his freedom–all because of the hurt feelings of some Portland protesters.

Next: Who are Strickland’s other accusers and how Portlanders are getting tired of these protesters.

Journalist Charged With Pulling Gun to Stop Anarchist Attack Denied Change of Venue From Anti-Gun Portland

The trial of Michael Strickland, a journalist who goes by the social media handle “Laughing at Liberals,” will start in a Multnomah County courtroom in Portland, Oregon on Monday.

Strickland has been charged with 21 felonies for drawing his weapon in self-defense at a Portland Black Lives Matter/Don’t Shoot PDX as violent anarchists rushed him as he filmed for his website.

As I explained in my previous post:

“Strickland drew his legally obtained and licensed concealed Glock pistol, never placing his finger on the trigger, but drew down on the people advancing toward him, stopping what he believed was going to be an attack. He withdrew, walking backwards away from the threat and holstered his weapon when he believed the immediate threat was over.

Since then, the Portland area journalist has been jailed, his tools of his trade–cameras, recording equipment and his own recordings, which are exculpatory evidence in his case, have been confiscated–and Strickland has been ordered to stop working in journalism, thus depriving him of his ability to make a living.

This heavy-handed attack on the rights on one man has been done by the Multnomah County District Attorney and deputy Kate Molina and is due to what some involved in the case believe is a political agenda.

Absurdly, the case is also based on the testimony by some of the very people who were rushing to attack Strickland.”

Judge Thomas Ryan will preside over the proceedings.

At a hearing this week, Strickland’a attorney Chris Trotter asked for several motions, including change of venue out of Multnomah County–Oregon’s most liberal and anti-gun county. The motion was denied.

Portland Police traditionally have had a hands-off approach to protesters until violence breaks out –which has happened at nearly every gathering of the leftists.

Multnomah County has a bias in favor protesters. Peaceful assembly is something our constitution protects. But, based on history, most of these assemblies are seldom, if ever, peaceful.

Now, Portland Police have added to their hands-off approach a ‘we’ll-hide-over-here’ and wait for violence to break out.

How’s that ‘we’ll be over here if you need us’ approach working?

At the Portland Airport on Sunday, protesters took over the airport, blocked traffic and threatened drivers. A loud and annoying street preacher was beaten. The police came only after the attack.

In fact, one of the ‘victims’ in the Strickland case, anarchist Ben Kerensa, was back on the streets intimidating and blocking this driver at the airport:

At a particularly odious anti-Donald Trump protest and riot, a protester was shot when police allowed the rabble to take over the Morrison Bridge over the Willamette River.

The day of the Strickland attack, the police had taken up their hands-off-we’ll-hide-over-here approach. They were not visible and therefore provided no visual intimidation to the attackers.

This was even though a ‘Don’t Shoot PDX’ rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square was given a pep talk by self described Black Panthers encouraging people to get their guns and commit acts of violence at the event (see post below).

When it was over, one of the only guys not in favor of violence had to pull his gun to stay out of the hospital.

The trial starts Monday and prosecutors will attempt to prove that Strickland wasn’t a journalist but an antagonizing counter protester.

Strickland is a paid journalist, so he’s far from the DA’s characterization. But, think about that for a second, if he were a counter protester, would it have been acceptable for the anarchists to attack him? That seems to be where they’re going with this.

Next: Why the anarchists at the July 7th protest were out to get Strickland.

Bomb Threats, Activism, Anarchy: ‘Victim’ in Strickland Gun Case Is a Convicted Liar

In October of 2003, then 19-year-old Benjamin Kerensa was an angry man. Nothing much has changed between then and now.

Photo provided to Victoria Taft by San Francisco Police Department

The 11th grade drop out was proficient at coding and had appeared to have become beguiled by the computer and online culture of Silicon Valley.

When he came to his volunteer job for a San Francisco mayoral candidate Jim Reid, co-workers remembered that he spent time on the computer and eating the food donated to the campaign.

Kerensa told the candidate he was homeless and appreciated the his stance on the prolific homelessness issues that continue to confront San Francisco. He was said to be an “enthusiastic” volunteer and kept the office open “day and night.”

But his online life wasn’t so sanguine. When Kerensa was given only limited credentials to attend the prestigious Oracle World computer confab in San Francisco, the 19-year-old apparently thought, ‘Well, if I can’t go, they can’t go.’

He called in a bomb threat to the Moscone Convention Center. The entire place, including the thousands assembled for Oracle World as well as other conventioneers, were evacuated.

And it wasn’t a one-off. While San Francisco Police told me the reports from the incident were difficult to get their hands on, an article on the bomb threat at the time made clear that Kerensa was a pro at this.

Kerensa made threats to his former employer, the AMC 1000 Theater, the Moscone Center, a building at the UN Plaza, a federal building and the Navy vessel, the USS Cleveland. And he did it all from the mayoral candidate’s office:

The threats were lodged in computer messages to the FBI and the Police Department on an electronic network run by MCI that is designed to help hearing-impaired people make telephone calls over the computer via the Internet. Authorities said they were hindered in their investigation by the confidentiality that had been afforded to users of the system. Managers of the service, IP-Relay.com, did not return calls seeking comment.

The threats began with a series of telephonic messages against the AMC 1000 Theater on Aug. 27, prompting the evacuation of 1,000 moviegoers.

New threats were made to the theater Aug. 30, two days after a pair of pipe bombs exploded at Chiron Corp.’s Emeryville headquarters. The threats said a bomb would go off “just like the Emeryville explosion,” authorities said.

Kerensa went to federal prison in Lompoc for several years for the threats:

Kerensa Docket 3-03-cr-00333-JSW

The charges against Kerensa said that he meant to “intimidate individuals and unlawfully …damage and destroy buildings and other real and personal property by means of fire and an explosive.”

The candidate was shocked:

“If I knew he was going to make bomb threats from my office, I wouldn’t have let him in for a second.”

It was an M-O he would use in Oregon and again against another former employer, but more on those later.

Now Kerensa is one of the ‘victims’ of Mike Strickland in his case in Multnomah County.

He’s here, one of several of his compatriots in black block who rushed the journalist when they saw him recording a Black Lives Matter/Don’t Shoot PDX event:

This heavy-handed attack on the rights on one man has been done by the Multnomah County District Attorney and is due to what some involved in the case believe is a political agenda.

Absurdly, the case is also based on the testimony by some of the very people who were rushing to attack Strickland.”

And now Kerensa and some of the very same bad actors who had roughed up Strickland before and were coming back for more are depicted by the Multnomah County DA’s Office as ‘victims.’

But, the prosecution’s faith in Kerensa to tell the truth is belied by his criminal past and the fact that he has a personal grudge against Strickland. More on that next time.
