Oregon Environmental Anarchist Fans Flames of Sabotage

Oregon is home to every cockeyed bunch of people who spend their days and nights plotting destruction in the name of saving the planet.

From Earth Liberation Front, Animal Liberation Front, Anarchists, Earth First! to Tre Arrow’s buddies, Occupy, Laughing Horse Books and Craig Rosebraugh’s lackeys, anti social radicals have cultivated a home in the fertile soil of Oregon.

Their radical kin teach in our schools, camp with Occupy, sit on cop watch boards, occupy positions at Portland State University and populate Neighborhood Associations and community boards, their backpacks overflowing with socialist tracts and minds full of Utopian plans.

Now one of the more notorious radicals has emerged from the ashes of her favorite arson at a Vail ski resort ( her favorite T shirt being one which read, “I Torched Vail, Ask Me Why”) and has penned an essay extolling the virtues of sabotage as a political tool and urging others to embrace it.

If  “Pitch” the tree sitter was going for shock value she succeeded.

In the essay entitled, “My Name is Emma Murphy-Ellis and I Support Sabotage,” the Earth Liberation Front/Earth First! radical exhorts her compatriots to embrace sabotage.

Radical actions and radical movements grow out of supportive cultures. Let us once again build a strong supportive base for them. …It is not illegal to talk about how awesome the blockade and sabotage was and say proudly that you wish there were more like it. And,it should not be illegal to openly support and generally advocate the use of incendiary devices.

She apparently misses the good old days.

Murphy Ellis aka “Pitch” made the news in the early 2000’s when she and her buddy Tre Arrow aka Michael Scarpitti, occupied the trees in the Eagle Creek area of the Mt Hood National Forest. They and others slung hammocks and tree houses in an area whose timber was to be sold off. Murphy-Ellis made news by threatening to commit suicide by hanging herself from the trees when the Feds busted up the action. Scarpitti moved his protest to Portland where City officials —including Mayor Vera Katz–embraced him; refusing to order him down from the ledge of the U.S. Forest Service building where he slept, pooped and protested for days,

Earth First! /ELF Drawing

Scarpitti was embraced by the Liberatti of Portland even though he was suspected of–and later pleaded guilty to—torching three trucks belonging to the Ross Island Sand and Gravel Company (full disclosure: my boss, Dr. Robert Pamplin, owns Ross Island Sand and Gravel but the incident happened before I was an employee) and and two trucks and a front loader owned by Ray Schoppert Logging Company.

His buddy, Murphy Ellis, wants to go back to those bad old days before federal officials actually arrested people for terrorism,

[The] Green Scare, in which dozens of activists were incarcerated, our movement got seriously screwed with, and we have had some extremely hard times because of the repression we have faced for the last six years.

But she says it’s time to go back to embracing domestic terrorism in order to save the earth, the cops be damned,

It is not illegal to talk about how awesome the blockade and sabotage was… and say proudly that you wish there were more like it. And, it should not be illegal to openly support and generally advocate the use of incendiary devices….If there is a knock on your door by the agents of state repression (supposedly because of your undying, unabashed support of pouring abrasive compounds into gas tanks, loosening bolts that hold up power lines, or smashing computers at your local biotech facility.) So what. [emph mine]

And you (and your private property) don’t count,

[W]e must not allow concerns about property rights to stop us from protecting the land, sea, and air…

It’s good to know as these same folks turn their attention to today’s issues: coal trains and fracking, they’ll say anything, do anything to sell their viewpoint. And they’re willing because as “Pitch” says,

[T]here are no promises in love and eco-war. Long live the Earth Liberation Front!

And don’t you forget it.

Joe the Taxpayer: The Measure 5 Blame Game. Lawmakers’ "Fix" of 5 Caused Current Problems

Lawmakers have Measure 5 in their cross hairs again this legislative session. The Oregon League of Cities and other groups are urging legislators go after the property tax limiting Measure 5 again, with lots of graphs to twist the problems of Measures 47/50, both of which were efforts to neuter Measure 5.

But they caused the problems in the first place. Now they reckon the cure was worse than the “illness”.

Oregon’s newspapers are being enlisted in the fight. The following editorial in the Eugene Register Guard  :

A house on Garden Way in northeast Eugene sold recently for $178,000, and a house on Lincoln Street in south Eugene sold for $179,900. A fair property tax system would collect close to the same amount from both owners, but that’s not happening. Property taxes on the Lincoln Street house are $1,002 a year less.

This is a study by Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue that’s making the rounds of Salem and local government

Measure 5 taxed property at the true market value and it killed rampant use of Urban Renewal. Measure 5 forced special taxing districts to go to the voters, to ask them if they wanted to be taxed more to pay for urban renewal and other tax special taxing districts breaks.

Now, as Don McIntire and Tom Dennehy predicted, if we capped property taxes and like in California with prop 13 and Oregon’s measure 47/50, we now have similar properties paying different amounts. In their naked zeal to “fix” Measure 5, they wrote new measures whose problems were foreseeable. They chose to close their eyes and now we have this inequity as a result.

Most of the compression problems are because the cities like Portland just added a tax base for the Oregon historical society and libraries. And most of the politicians who that think we have a problem, supported those new taxing districts with their tax increases.

The latest attempt to kill Measure 5 because of the screw ups on Measures 47 and 50 is a money grab. Even the Register Guard admits it, though it tries to hide it (note my emphasis below),

The League of Oregon Cities will ask the Legislature to reduce the inequities by requiring that the taxable value of property be adjusted to its real market value at the time of sale. The league notes that 15 of the 17 states that have limits similar to those of Measure 50 reset assessed values when property changes hands. No one’s taxes would go up as a result of this change,

The league’s proposal would also increase revenues for local governments. The Legislative Revenue Office estimates that higher taxes on properties that change hands would total $92 million in the first year, and $1.1 billion annually after 10 years.

Who created Measure 50 and the inequities? It was a creation of the Oregon legislature trying to fix measure 47. So why are they blaming Measure 5 for their screw up?

I guess they can’t admit they are the problem and again Measure 5, becomes the scapegoat for their over taxing and spending!

From the 5th Listener Mail Bag: The Medford Two

Victoria,
Bad judgment, for exercising your constitutional rights?
I think the callers who are criticizing the “Medford 2” are exhibiting their constitutional rights as much as the two gentlemen from Jackson County were!
Al

Brush prairie, WA
Hi Victoria: Great show: The sellwood display of gun power, while legal is so distrubing to me. At Clackamas Town Center, Jake, took guns out of his car slung him over his shoulder and headed into the shopping area. At what point do I with a conceal, pull out my gun power? I just think in Sellwood, those 2 guys are lucky someone did not fire first. It is just me or what, thanks.

Victoria,
So we can have Occupy breaking all rules in using the parks and protesting without permit, but a couple of guys carrying weapons legally to educate people about second amendment is a crime?
The Obama administration is encouraging people to break our laws in everything they do, letting illegal aliens to live here as legal residents, befriend terrorist states and organizations, stomping on Constitution, and now he wants to make enemies with his own citizens by grabbing their guns. People will be willing to lie so they don’t have to register their names and their weapons, eventually we will have militia going against the White House.
