Just *DID* It, Nike. Now You Can Change the Name of the Joe Paterno Child Development Center on Your Campus. Really.

UPDATED: Nike will remove Joe Paterno’s name from its child care center. Forbes has the story. Money:

Now, in the wake of the Freeh Report implicating Paterno in covering up Sandusky’s crimes and failing to protect child rape victims, the sports giant has finally capitulated.
Here’s Nike president Mark Parker’s statement:

I have been deeply saddened by the news coming out of this investigation at Penn State. It is a terrible tragedy that children were unprotected from such abhorrent crimes. With the findings released today, I have decided to change the name of our child care center at our World Headquarters. My thoughts are with the victims and the Penn State community.

Nike billionaire founder Phil Knight added his thoughts to the turn of events:

Other than my parents, my college coach, Bill Bowerman, was the biggest influence in my life. Bill Bowerman and Joe Paterno shared some great qualities. Throughout Joe Paterno’s career, he strived to put young athletes in a position to succeed and win in sport but most importantly in life. Joe influenced thousands of young men to become better leaders, fathers and husbands.
According to the investigation, it appears Joe made missteps that led to heartbreaking consequences. I missed that Joe missed it, and I am extremely saddened on this day. My love for Joe and his family remains.

Previous Post asking Nike to Just Change It:
Dear Nike,
JoPa knew.
He tried to hide it according to former FBI Director Louis Freeh in his 267 page report about Penn State. Find it HERE.

Here are a couple of things you may want to consider while measuring for the new sign.

“After Mr. Curley consulted with Mr. Paterno, however, they changed the plan and decided not to make a report to the authorities,” the report said. “Their failure to protect the … child victim, or make attempts to identify him, created a dangerous situation for other unknown, unsuspecting young boys who were lured to the Penn State campus and football games by Sandusky and victimized repeatedly by him.”

or

“Taking into account the available witness statements and evidence, it is more reasonable to conclude that, in order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, the most powerful leaders at Penn State University – Messrs. Spanier, Schultz, Paterno andC urley – repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse from the authorities, the Board of Trustees, Penn State community, and the public at large. Although concern to treat the child abuser humanely was expressly stated, no such sentiments were ever expressed by them for Sandusky’s victims.”

I haven’t been making an issue of this before now. I think you’ll agree, however, it is time to change your sign.

If not, maybe you’ll consider these new outbuildings for the Nike Campus:

The Mike Tyson Sensitivity and Rape Recovery Center
The Lance Armstrong Blood Mobile
The ‘Roger Clemens Way’ Center for Body Building
Qyntel Woods Doggie Day Care

The possibilities are endless.

Nike, you’ve got choices. Just do it. Change the sign.

Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt Gavels Down Again on Answers to CRC

Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt has turned down a request to openly discuss the Columbia River Crossing issue in a live, unscripted give-and-take with local businessman, David Madore. Leavitt says he will not participate in an interview about the CRC project with the local Couv.com chief and Columbia River Crossing opponent–a webcast that would be seen by untold numbers of people in the region. He’s told Madore to go somewhere else to get answers.

Here’s what an alert 5th Listener sent me:

Victoria,  Just found this on Mr. Madore’s FB page. Thought you would find his interaction attempt with Tim Leavitt very interesting.

I just received Tim Leavitt’s response to my request to have a two way conversation with him in a live video webcast on COUV.com about his favorite project. Here is his reply:

Mr. Madore —
Thank you for your inquiry and request for a meeting to discuss the CRC Project.

I am unable to accommodate your request.

Inquiry about details of the project is most appropriately directed to the CRC technical staff that continue to refine the design.

Inquiry about financing of the project is most appropriately directed to our State and Federal Representatives.

Otherwise, my position (as vetted through many, many public dialogues) in support of the purpose and need for the CRC Project for creation of jobs and future prosperity of our Community is well-documented.

You’ll find more detail and factual information at the CRC Project website. (www.columbiarivercrossing.org)

And, really, isn’t that what they’ve all been forcing Clark County taxpayers to do? Go somewhere besides their elected officials to get answers? Madore has put up who knows how much of his personal fortune to get Leavitt and other elected officials to DO THEIR FIDUCIARY DUTIES and get answers to questions about the CRC.

Madore and Plaid Pantry operator Chris Girard, put their personal fortunes and their reputations on the line by funding researchers, economists and a forensic accountant to assess the project and the $150 million in sunk costs in the project. All it has gotten these captains of industry is ignored by elected officials. Clark County elected officials of every stripe have been embarrassing in their response to legitimate concerns about the CRC spending. In fact, these business owners’ work has led to huge changes in the project and moved the Oregon State legislators to issue an audit on the excessive spending on the CRC.

Now Leavitt has gaveled down Madore. Again.

Recently, I’ve been asked by Mr. Madore over at Couv.com to some moderate debates and interview folks running for office. He’s put these up on the Couv.com website and live-streamed them. I’ve also included them on the Victoria Taft blog. See them nearby.
Madore has done this at considerable personal expense. His facilities are state of the art. He has a full complement of people working behind the scenes on each of these webcasts. I’ve given my time pro bono. Madore told me he has done these webcasts to provide transparency on the people and issues in the upcoming elections.

These debates/interviews have been, in my opinion, wildly successful. The conversations have been insightful and even fun. Most Democrats have demurred from the invitation, State Rep. Jim Moeller being a notable exception (and his appearance was very engaging). The discussions been insightful, fun and helpful as Washingtonians begin to think about people running for office in the August Primary and November general election.

Madore has now asked Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt for a one-on-one discussion on Light Rail and the CRC. Leavitt has now said no.

Seems to me if “no” is their favorite answer to the people who pay their salaries and give them their jobs, it’s time to say NO! on everything concerning the light rail bridge otherwise known as the Columbia River Crossing.

Come to think of it, it’s time to say “NO!” to those people too.

Mult Co Chief Uses Library List for Electioneering?

Multnomah County Library card holders probably thought they only got nasty-grams and found out when their reserved books were in via email. Nope. Thanks to an alert 5th Listener we learn the Library system’s listserv is also being used to electioneer in favor of a proposed tax increase.
Multnomah County Library card holders received this (unenhanced) email in their inbox recently. It’s a note from County Chair Jeff Cogen telling library patrons that their beloved libraries could be cutback  and urging them to “participate” in a “community discussion” on raising their taxes.
The “community discussions” are being held throughout the summer to electioneer in favor of a new taxing district and increased spending on libraries. I claim this because that is exactly what The Friends of the Library tax backers are telling their supporters. See a screen cap of their web page nearby.

The County email is an example of how local public officials use taxpayer funded resources against you. And you’ll see in this post why I say that. These officials use public resources on public time to electioneer in favor of tax increase. Will opponents get the same advantage of free advertising using public resources? Of course not. Does this violate campaign laws in Oregon? I think it does, but I’m checking with an attorney to make sure.
The email then asks you to take a survey. Read about this after the jump.

In his email Cogen then asks you to go to THIS link: https://www.research.net/s/MultnomahCountyLibrary to answer some questions.  Check out the preamble on the questionnaire!

After doom and gloom preamble and how great it would be to raise your taxes, the questions commence.
Which library do you use? How often? What do you do there? And then this: What’s the biggest threat to our local libraries? What? Are they talking about porno watching bums? The coming Zombie Apocalypse? No. They’re talking about reducing services, naturally.
Then we eventually come to the big question: What do you want, dead baby harp seals or fluffy puppies?

Oh, an you MUST answer the question because nobody gets out of here without singing the blues.

County officials will, of course, use this no choice answer to pretend there’s good support for raising taxes because they’ve rigged the survey.

Locations of “Conversations”

The meetings you’re being asked to attend are about one thing: raising your taxes by establishing a new “library district” to jack up property taxes of those who live in this heretofore never before established new “district.” Back where I come from (oh, wait, that’s here!) we call those counties. Counties fund the libraries through existing taxes. If they can’t afford to keep the libraries going then they need to cut back elsewhere.

I will be filing a campaign complaint with the Secretary of State’s Office but you know how those things go. If found guilty there’s only a $75 fine.  By the way, I’m still looking for a lawmaker who will propose this $75 fine will apply to every offense; in other words, every person who receives emails or liar flyers like this in the future will be worth a $75 fine. Who will stand up and do that?

Dear Victoria:

I would like to learn more about the July 17th rally that is supposed to take place at 10am in the southeastern corner of Independence and First street of Washington DC. I will not be able to attend, but would like to read about it, if at all possible.  From my understanding of what this rally entails is that government officials are being put under a spot light to be held accountable for their actions.

I think it’s about time for the political party divide to subside and make way to collective thought for unifying America to progress to the future as one.

Please email Jerrol LeBaron at Media@honorinoffice.org for press credentials.
