Longshore Local President Dan Coffman on Escalating Union Thuggery

After a carjacking, vandalism of rail cars, dumping (not spilling) grain, destruction of private property, interfering with interstate commerce, assaulting Police Officers, preventing security guards from leaving while they trashed the facility and the possibility of involvement in rail tampering, Governor Gregoire, it is time you called out the Guard to protect innocent American workers, Union workers in Longview.

This thuggery must stop before someone is seriously injured or killed at the hands of these thugs.

Now That W WEEK and BoJack Are Paying Attention to Bus Project And Jefferson Smith, Let’s Go Back Down Memory Lane, Shall We?

Here’s an email I sent to both Nigel Jacquiss of Willamette Week and Jack Bogdanski, a local blogger, about Mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith’s Bus Project.
Both are attempting to look into the money troubled candidate (here) and the inner workings of the organization which is a 501c3 charity, 501c4 and PAC (here and here).

“Since there now seems to be a deeper interest in the inner workings of the Bus Project you might want to check this out…

In the 2010 election J Smith and the Bus Project rode to the rescue of several house members and candidates (see links below).

The Bus Project’s 501c3 status gave it a ‘charitable’ veneer so that high school kids (N. Clackamas School District) could “volunteer” for the Bus Project and be given required “community service” credit. And do you know what they did as

their “service?” They were given a pep talk, speeches by BRAD AVAKIAN, and campaign literature to pass out door-to-door for Cheryl Myers (surprise, surprise! the N Clack Superintendent), the hand chosen (Democrat) candidate who ran against Pat Sheehan.

    In short:
  • Bus Project purports to be a community service organization through its 501c3.
  • Bus Project only helps Democrat candidates.
  • Bus Project acts as rapid response force and personnel agency for Democrats under its 501c4.
  • Bus Project acts as promoter of liberal issues through its PAC.
  • Bus Project gave out community service credit to students REQUIRED to have it to graduate in No Clackamas School District.
  • Liberal teacher in said district recommended students use Bus Project.
  • Students met at Grant HS where they were given a partisan pep talk (in one case Earl Blumenauer).
  • Students were then taken back to No Clackamas where they were greeted by BOLI Commissioner Brad Avakian (No minimum wage for these free campaign workers for his buddies!) and the object of their community service: Cheryl Myers.
  • Students from No Clackamas were briefed on Cheryl Myers’ beliefs etc and given pamphlets about the House District 51 candidate.
  • Students were sent out to go door to door to talk up voters and hand out pamphlets.
  • Cheryl Myers is/was the No Clackamas School Superintendent
  • Bus Project NOT an approved organization under No Clack Co Schools rules of community service.
At the same time this assist was being given Myers, then-Oregon House Speaker, Dave Hunt, was busy bankrolling those Liar Flyers about Myers’ opponent, Pat Sheehan.

Fast Cars and Freedom: Portlanders Still Prefer Freedom & Privacy of Their Own Cars

As I pointed out recently this in this post, cars equal freedom. Just ask a 16 year old with a newly minted driver’s license and a car key if you doubt me.

Now a new study shows most Portlanders seem to agree.

Census Bureau Data

Despite clear cutting a neighborhood to make room for light rail trains we can’t afford, agonizingly slow street cars on newly created one way streets and fluorescent green bike boxes (“Bikes in front of cars” as Mayor Sam Adams puts it),  people in Portland prefer to drive alone to work. They like it that way. They like the privacy. They like the freedom.

And it seems that Portlanders like driving more than their LA counterparts.

According to the Census Bureau in its just released study, “Journey to Work,”highlighted in the Zero (here):

As has long been the case, the vast majority of the region’s residents prefer to drive alone to work daily. Public-transit usage actually dropped from 6.3 percent in 2008. Of course, the survey was taken at a time when the recession caused huge drops in TriMet ridership.

Emphasis added by the Zero’s unbiased staff.  But why do people prefer cars? Probably because they’re faster:

It Costs A lot to Hire People, Mr. President

The President thinks a small tax credit and an employee FICA holiday along with “if you don’t hire the unemployed I’ll…” threats will entice small business owners to immediately hire folks.

It’s going to take a bit more than threats, Mr. President.

It’s going to take a turnaround in the economy and growth before employers make the offer. There’s got to be a long term upside to the hire. Because look at that chart over there. It says it costs roughly $58K to hire an employee and that excludes training costs! That’s an average cost including the big and little boys.

As precious metals mogul Peter Schiff recently told a Congressional  …

Committee, hiring a person is the riskiest thing an employer can do. In the same testimony he also averred that he’d been FINED FOR HIRING TOO MANY PEOPLE. See his testimony (featured recently on my show) nearby.

Here’s what the President’s “jobs” plan supposedly will do in part (source here):

It cuts the payroll tax for workers in half, which amounts to a $175 billion tax break, and cuts it in half for businesses until they reach the $5 million mark on their payrolls, at a cost of $65 billion. The idea there is to target the tax cut to struggling small businesses, rather than the cash-rich large businesses. It also extends the credit allowing businesses to expense 100 percent of their investments through 2012, which the White House predicts will cost $5 billion.

Instead of picking winners and losers, the President should reduce the taxes for all companies and stand back. His targeted favors to certain business and jobs plans will just distort those areas of the economy.

He likes green and organic stuff, right? Let the economy grow where it will and there will be plenty of green for everybody. It sure beats what’s going on now.

Cowlitz County Requests Judge to Expedite EGT Decision

From the Daily News, Cowlitz County Commissioners, apparently fearful of further union thuggery have requested U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Leighton “to expedite a decision in the dispute over union labor at the new EGT grain terminal.”

Commissioners maintain “they aren’t taking sides but want the conflict resolved quickly,” citing the reason they fear the already “very volatile situation” could escalate into “serious injury.”

The letter sent to Judge Leighton states, “We believe the situation is at a high risk of escalation with potential serious injury to citizens or law enforcement.” Commissioner George Raiter added, “We don’t want to take sides. We just want to get this resolved as soon as possible.”

Union officials say they are opposed to rushing the decision and in spite of commissioners saying they do not wish to influence the judges decision either way, maintaining a neutral stance, the union also questions whether or not they are truly neutral.

Leal Sundet, ILWU Coast Committeeman is quoted from his statement, “It is totally inappropriate for the Cowlitz County commissioners to interject themselves in the judicial process. And suggesting that ‘someone will get hurt if the protests continue’ is an incendiary remark that appears designed to create bias in the judge’s mind against the union.”

EGT CEO Larry Clarke said in a written  statement, “We share the commissioners’ concern regarding the toll the ILWU’s illegal activity is having on our community. We look forward to Friday’s next step in the legal process.”

I am left wondering, Have the commissioners taken into account that even with an expedited decision now, what about the years of likely appeals by whichever side loses? No matter what is decided, it is highly doubtful the matter will end with that one decision.
