Cowlitz County Requests Judge to Expedite EGT Decision

From the Daily News, Cowlitz County Commissioners, apparently fearful of further union thuggery have requested U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Leighton “to expedite a decision in the dispute over union labor at the new EGT grain terminal.”

Commissioners maintain “they aren’t taking sides but want the conflict resolved quickly,” citing the reason they fear the already “very volatile situation” could escalate into “serious injury.”

The letter sent to Judge Leighton states, “We believe the situation is at a high risk of escalation with potential serious injury to citizens or law enforcement.” Commissioner George Raiter added, “We don’t want to take sides. We just want to get this resolved as soon as possible.”

Union officials say they are opposed to rushing the decision and in spite of commissioners saying they do not wish to influence the judges decision either way, maintaining a neutral stance, the union also questions whether or not they are truly neutral.

Leal Sundet, ILWU Coast Committeeman is quoted from his statement, “It is totally inappropriate for the Cowlitz County commissioners to interject themselves in the judicial process. And suggesting that ‘someone will get hurt if the protests continue’ is an incendiary remark that appears designed to create bias in the judge’s mind against the union.”

EGT CEO Larry Clarke said in a written  statement, “We share the commissioners’ concern regarding the toll the ILWU’s illegal activity is having on our community. We look forward to Friday’s next step in the legal process.”

I am left wondering, Have the commissioners taken into account that even with an expedited decision now, what about the years of likely appeals by whichever side loses? No matter what is decided, it is highly doubtful the matter will end with that one decision.

After Sabotage on the Tracks It’s Time for Feds to Get Serious With Longshore Union

The Longshore Union members have taken it a bridge too far in the effort to muscle into the jobs at the Longview  based EGT grain facility.

The months’ long battle for primacy at the Port of Longview facility has seen some pretty dirty dealing–ax handles and baseball bats used on protest signs, vandalism, HOSTAGE TAKING—but in my book none compares to what appears to be their latest gambit: sabotaging the railroad tracks. From the Longview Daily News here:

Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad officials say about a dozen locations along a 60-mile stretch of railroad tracks in Southwest Washington were tampered with on Monday.
Spokesman Gus Melonas says the main line was temporarily shut down midday while officials investigated. The tracks were later cleared for traffic. Tampering was reported along the line from just north of Vancouver to Chehalis.
Melonas would not say how the tracks were tampered with. He says BNSF workers discovered the problem shortly before 11 a.m. Monday. Police are investigating.
The tracks carry about 60 trains a day, including Amtrak passengers trains and freight that is hazardous.

Those are the tracks used by all the trains–Amtrak included. That means someone sabotaged the tracks–gee, I wonder who?–and meant to harm innocents.

It’s over.

Call the Feds. Invoke RICO, conspiracy, and attempted murder charges against the likely culprits. Let the investigation begin.

Longshore Union Tries to Get Rid of Sheriff; Become the "Law" of Cowlitz County

After crying about the Cowlitz County Sheriff being mean to them and arresting them in inconvenient places for their illegal thuggery, the Longshore unions now plan a recall drive.

“Cowlitz County has become a battle zone, and Mark Nelson has some of the blame. Citizens depended on law enforcement to decelerate the situation, which Mark Nelson has failed to do. In fact, his officers have contributed to the turmoil and accelerating the atmosphere of

violence in what would have been a peaceful protest,” ILWU’s Longview-based Local 21 President Dan Coffman and local treasurer Byron Jacobs argue in the recall complaint.

Longshore members have used ax handles, baseball bats, threats, vandalism, intimidation and hostage taking of guards at the embattled EGT company to impose their will on the SW Washington community. (See previous posts here, here, here, here, here, here, among others.)

The burden is all on the union to clear the high hurdle of a recall. From the Longview Daily News here and here:

The recall petition must pass two legal hurdles before it can appear on the ballot.
A superior court judge must first rule whether the charges fit the legal definition of “malfeasance” or “misfeasance” or the violation of Nelson’s oath of office. Otherwise, the recall would be invalid.

I hardly think that arresting thugs for breaking the law will rise to the level of “mal or mis feasance” but that’s not the point.

The Longshore union members are using this as another intimidation tactic.

If they succeed, union thuggery will be the law of Cowlitz County and its Sheriff, the Longshoreman’s collective.

Good luck with that.

TriMet Destroys Trees for Unfunded Light Rail Project; Makes Lincoln Logs

BEFORE (Photo:Oregonian)

Portland’s financially struggling light rail agency, TriMet, has

begun clear cutting an entire street to make room for an unfunded light rail line.
The move is about as cynical as it gets. By felling the tree canopy along SW Lincoln Street near Portland State University, the agency is attempting to create a sense of inevitability about the light rail line coming through.
The battle over funding is just getting going.
AFTER (Photo:John Charles)

This potential light rail line is supposed to hook up with a Milwaukie light rail line.

But Clackamas County voters have voted to put the kibosh on a car tax for their light rail contribution and, in fact, are on the ballot for another vote on urban renewal funds being used for light rail or any project without the consent of the governed.
From John Charles of the Cascade Policy Institute:

This is very sad, it’s hard to understand why we are spending $205 million a mile just to wreck a street.

Or, to be more precise, the cost is as follows: distance from 1st to 4th on Lincoln = 907 feet, which means the destruction of just this street is costing us $35.2 million. What would you do to actually IMPROVE transit for $35 million for 3 short blocks?
Good question.

On Sept. 7, McEllrath was briefly handcuffed while standing on rail tracks with about 400 other protesters. Police said he was released after a crowd rushed the officers, and union officials blamed police for escalating tension by arresting their president.
So far only one arrest has been made in connection with a raid at the EGT facility Sept. 8, when hu

The show of solidarity from East and West Coast dockworkers was strong. All machinery and equipment in West Coast ports stopped for fifteen minutes as McEllrath turned himself in, and the presidents of the local unions at the ports of Seattle, Tacoma, Portland and Vancouver accompanied him through the front door of the Hall of Justice. Also with McEllrath were two representatives from the International Longshoremen’s Association, including its International Vice President, Ken Riley.

“Today I’m standing with Longview’s longshore workers and their supporters who have been harshly punished for standing up to multinational bully EGT,” said McEllrath, a Vancouver longshore worker who was elected as ILWU International President in 2006 and re-elected in 2009. “Sheriff Mark Nelson needs to start accepting our offers to process arrests peacefully, and stop sending out multiple squad cars on Sundays to make over-the-top arrests and rack up the overtime costs. The Sheriff’s current program is totally unnecessary and clearly designed to intimidate and harass union members for exercising their free speech and associational rights.”

Rees Lloyd: Air Time Shouldn’t Be Wasted on Race Baiting Demogogues

With all respect due to Victoria Taft, the voice of liberty in Portland, the Principality of Political Correctness,   I must object to her playing on her show on Monday (9/26/11) the tape of a speech (or sermon, perhaps) by the  Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the Chicago clergyman who who used his pulpit to spread vicious racial hatred in preaching Black Liberation Theology, and shocked the nation with his infamous statement: “Not God Bless America– God Damn America!”

Although I tuned in midway in his taped speech, I recognized Jeremiah Wright’s race-baiting by the cadence of his delivery; the obvious “us-vs-them” call  to racial division and confrontation: and the fact that he is apparently unable to articulate a “g” sound  of words ending in “ing,”  and thus implored his audience to be   ‘marchin’,” “workin’,”

“hopin’,” etc. Pure Jeremiah Wright condescendingly employing what he considers “just folks” speech, i.e., “talkin’ down” to Americans he thinks are so stupid they can’t speak English, or can’t recognize condescension for the insult that it is.

Please do not give airtime to this obviously divisive, demagogic peddler of race hatred.

Oh, wait, my  smarter-than-me spouse  just informed me that that wasn’t Jeremiah Wright of race-baiting fame on the Victoria Taft  Show.  As hard as it is for me to believe,  it was actually President Barack Hussein Obama, the “Post-Racial President,” the President of “all the people”  who said he was going to “heal”the nation not divide it.

Could it be true?  Would a Harvard-trained lawyer over whom liberal media swoons in rapture concerning his “eloquence,” really speak so divisively, demagogically,  condescendingly to Americans re “marchin’,” “workin’,” etc.?

Is this really the speech not of a Chicago conman peddling a racial brew of political snake oil, but of a President of the United States, especially one who told us that “we are the ones that we’ve been waiting for,” who said “there are not ‘red’ states and ‘blue’ states, but only the United States,” and that upon his ascension to the presidency “the earth shall heal, and the seas recede”?

Apparently, it is true. Therefore, I apologize to Victoria Taft , and her listeners and readers of her blog, for confusing our Post-Racial President Barack Hussein Obama with the Maniacally Racial Jeremiah Wright.

But, gee, they sure do sound alike…
