PPS Tax Backers Have Money to Burn. They’ve Got $$$ for a Poll. I Got Called Tonight!

I received a call tonight (during the Blazer game) from an organization claiming to be working in favor of the Portland Public Schools bond. The nice man asked for my husband. I told him my husband couldn’t come to the phone (you’re welcome, honey) and then he inquired if I was a voter and if I was aware of the bond/levy measures. I said yes and he immediately asked if I was a teacher. I told him no. He asked me how I was going to vote on them. I said I was going to vote no because they’ll cost me $3000.00 a year I don’t have and…  He cut me off and in his perky voice he said words to this effect, “Well the bill will only be $2.00 per thousand on the assessed value of the house.” I said, “You mean $2.74 per thousand don’t you?” He said well, yes, that will be for both of the measures.
Now maybe he’s only working for the bond part of the campaign, I don’t know, but telling people you’re only charging $2.00/thousand when it’s really $2.74/thousand for both is, uh, misleading.
By the way, he said I was a very educated voter. I said, “Yes, I am.”

Union Thuggery 101

H/T Breitbart’s Big Government

From the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), a course in Introduction to Labor Studies and Labor Politics and Society instructed by Judy Ancel, Director of Labor Studies at UMKC and Don Giljum, business manager for the International Union of Operating Engineers at Ameren UE in St. Louis and a member of the Communist Party.

Part II, the “professors” outline successful tactics in intimidation and threats during negotiations. Of note, at the end of the video, Ancel outlines a successful tactic used in Peru to shut down a power plant by using cats, causing their horrific deaths.

GZ Mosque Imam Will be Picketed in Portland on Wednesday; Not the "Moderate" and "Bridge Builder" He Claims To Be.

As you may have heard, Ground Zero Mosque Imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf is coming to Portland (see story here) and will be a featured speaker at the “Q Gathering,” a yearly conference on Christianity in culture. This year’s theme concerns Christianity in a post Christian culture. The Imam will be speaking on

Wednesday evening and I plan an informational picket at 5pm outside the Crystal Ballroom in downtown Portland. Please bring your hand made sign containing perhaps statements the Imam has made about America, Bin Laden, Jihad and Shariah.

Planned Site of GZ Mosque

I believe in open dialogue and many points of view. I believe in free speech, but I’ve let it be known that this man is not who he says he is and is not the voice of moderation–far from it. This week I’m featuring on my program people who have been explaining why Imam Rauf is not the moderate he claims. Please see the links to those interviews below.
Andy McCarthy, Robert Spencer, Brigitte Gabriel and others are being featured on my program to explain the Imam and his radical beliefs, the effrontery of a proposed mosque built as close as possible to Ground Zero, and his past comments about America being deserving of being attacked on 9/11.

As Victor Davis Hansen has pointed out:

To his liberal defenders, he is a sort of respectable Deepak Chopra who at respectable places like Aspen mouths pop platitudes of interfaith tolerance — so much so that our own State Department has employed him, apparently for quite some time, for goodwill gallivanting abroad.
But to those in the Middle East, he is known equally well for doing what he can, as a Western liberal, to contextualize terrorism, bin Laden, and Islamic extremism within the tired Western postmodern tropes of cultural relativism: “The United States’ policies were an accessory to the crime that happened” on 9/11; “In fact, in the most direct sense, Osama bin Laden is made in the U.S.A.”; “The U.S. and the West must acknowledge the harm they have done to Muslims before terrorism can end”; “The issue of terrorism is a very complex question”; “The Islamic method of waging war is not to kill innocent civilians. But it was Christians in World War II who bombed civilians in Dresden and Hiroshima, neither of which were military targets” — blah, blah, blah, like all the thinkery that one hears in the faculty lounge.

Please contact me (victoria@victoriataft.com) if you are interested in using our first amendment right to picket against the Ground Zero Imam. He’s fortunate to be living in a country that celebrates free speech even as he calls for America to turn to Shariah.

Many of you have been involved in fighting for liberty,  for American values and other worthy goals, but if we don’t fight back against the lies told by these people who wish to compromise us we won’t have a country or liberty to defend.

The Cone of Silence is Cracked and Whitewash Won’t Repair It

Jim Jacks & The Columbian

“You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.” Abraham Lincoln

Ever since the abrupt resignation of former representative, Democrat Jim Jacks this past March 25, a “cone of silence” has been erected surrounding Jacks and any bit of information about why he just up and quit following his re-election. He’s been scrubbed from official websites and it looks as if The Columbian is giving the former state rep a huge assist in keeping his story secret.

Requests for public records have been rejected. Jacks’ legislative website was taken down and his name removed from the rolls in the House even before the resignation was announced to the public. Calls on the media for information and reports on par with those of past incidents involving Republicans was met with “there is no paper trail to follow” by the Columbian’s editor, Lou Brancaccio.

The silence was broken this weekend, first by a teaser published online in the Saturday edition of the Columbian touting an “exclusive interview coming only in the print edition of the Sunday Columbian” and the “interview” itself. (Sunday’s follow-up column now available online here)

Saturday’s column revealed what many of us already knew, Jacks has had a problem with alcohol. In Sunday’s column, Lou Brancaccio tells us that Jacks had a “moment of clarity” all of a sudden in March, resigned his seat, climbed into the passenger seat of his wife’s car and had her drive him straight to rehab where he has been this past month.

What led to that “moment of clarity” is not stated, just that Jacks said, “I resigned because I’m an alcoholic.”

All along we have been led to believe that this was a sudden and surprising decision of Jacks, even though Sen. Craig Pridemore let slip in one article March 25 that they had been discussing this with Jacks for a few days prior.

Brancaccio tells us he “asked Jacks if his drinking resulted in his doing anything inappropriate” and Jacks “wasn’t exactly sure what I meant” at first.

Jacks replied, “I have no criminal record. I’ve gotten no DUIs. I’m sure I’ve driven when I should not have been driving. But I resigned because I had to fix my problem. I resigned because I’m an alcoholic.

Brancaccio says he “pressed him further” asking, “is it possible that someone might show up later and say you did something inappropriate to them while you were drinking?

Jacks says “no.

Left out of the exclusive interview is what Erik Smith of Washington State Wire discovered earlier as he looked into this matter.

Reports on file at the state Public Disclosure Commission indicate that Jacks transferred remaining campaign funds to the House Democratic Caucus campaign committee two days before the resignation. And the letter of resignation itself was faxed from a location in Oregon, the morning of March 25, 2011.

It would appear as if this was more of a planned and coordinated resignation than we have been led to believe so far. Even though rumors of inappropriate conduct have been rampant and growing, no actual documentation has come forward to date.

By the same token, simply entering rehab to deal with alcoholism doesn’t rise to the degree of the stonewall erected even before Jacks abruptly quitting was announced either.

Republican President Richard Nixon discovered the hard way that cover-ups do not hide wrongdoing with the Watergate scandal in the early 1970’s.

Democrats in Washington State would do well to recall that and even with a sympathetic newspaper whitewash, the lack of transparency will not make Jacks abrupt quitting vanish either.

The only way to squelch the rumors, some of which might be true and some not, others involving matters of public trust, is for the Democrats in Olympia to begin showing that transparency they claim to believe in.

Whitewashes and stonewalls are not transparency.
