Bruce McCain: SOME FACTS FOR SAM ADAMS TO CONSIDER on JTTF

On April 28, 2005, eight weeks before Beau Breedlove’s 18th birthday, Sam Adams joined three other Portland City Council members to remove the Portland Police Bureau from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). In the aftermath of last week’s attempted mass murder of

thousands of Oregonians by a local Muslim jihadist, Adams now says he is open to a “fact-based approach”
to reconsidering Portland’s role in the local JTTF. So what has been Adams’ decision-making approach prior to his epiphany that considering facts might be a good basis for policy-making?

In a November 30 interview with NPR (never to be confused with the Victoria Taft Show) Adams openly admits that his willingness to reconsider Portland’s singularly arrogant abstention from the JTTF has more to do with national politics than keeping Portlanders and fellow Oregonians safe from the likes of Mohamad “Mo Mo” Mohamud, the Somali man now accused by federal prosecutors of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Adams told NPR that his newfound openness to the JTTF is because
“…we have a new administration, and an administration at the federal level and new leadership at the local in the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office that I have a lot more trust in than the prior administration. That’s one reason to take a look at our status of membership in the JTTF.”
Adams unwittingly acknowledged what most Portlanders understood since April 2005 – that Portland’s withdrawal from the JTTF was based more on a lack of trust in the Bush administration that on the “facts” Adams now says should drive city policy decisions. As for the new leadership at the federal level? Adams appears unaware that Robert S. Mueller remains Barack Obama’s FBI director after having been first appointed to the position by the distrusted George W. Bush on September 4, 2001 – one week before the day that changed the world.
Adams also falsely claims that the Portland Police Bureau was working “side-by-side” with the JTTF on this latest Muslim terrorist case. While it is true that police chief Mike Reese was briefed two months ago on the existence of the investigation, Reese was required to sign a confidentiality agreement and admits his agency’s involvement was limited to logistic planning and support for the sting operation and Mo Mo’s arrest. That’s a far cry from the Bureau’s investigative role prior to walking away from the JTTF five years ago. Of course, Mike Reese is in the same untenable position as is every Portland police chief who can be replaced by the petulant Adams faster than a citizens involvement committee that gives the wrong advice to the mayor. If Reese expects to remain in Adams’ company longer than a city hall intern, don’t expect the chief to weigh in on the wisdom of having the state’s largest police agency conspicuously absent from the JTTF.
Yet Adams now says he will “sit down with the FBI, the ACLU, and other organizations in the coming days” to reevaluate the ill-advised 2005 council decision. The question is what “other organizations” will Adams include with the Oregon ACLU in these discussions? And why is the ACLU even given a seat at the same table as the FBI? Can we assume the Oregon Tea Party, 9/12 Project – or even Victoria Taft will be given a seat next to the ACLU’s Andrea Meyer?
In a December 1st editorial in The Oregonian, the Oregon ACLU repeats its anti-JTTF mantra by describing Mo Mo’s attempted mass murder as an “FBI-choreographed fake attempted bombing” and “the stuff of high drama” designed to be used “as an occasion to urge the city of Portland to rejoin the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.” And this is the source of Sam Adams’ fact –based legal advice?
The ACLU and the radical left who will no doubt rise in opposition to the Police Bureau rejoining the JTTF will point to the 2004 case of Brandon Mayfield as why Portlanders should not trust the FBI and why Portland should remain the only major city refusing to partner in any of the current 106 JTTF’s now protecting America. Yet these same protesters are conspicuously quiet about the Portland JTTF’s success in the 2003 “Portland Seven” case.
Lest we forget, Patrice Lumumba Ford, Jeffrey Leon Battle, October Martinique Lewis, Muhammed Ibrahim Bilal, Ahmed Ibrahim Bilal, Habis Abdulla al Saoub and Maher “Mike” Hawash were all home grown Muslim terrorists from the City of Roses. Naturally, their supporter’s claimed the familiar rant that the Portland Seven were just pawns and scapegoats in Bush’s allegedly failed wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sam Adams wants facts? Try these:
  • FACT: On September 18, 2003 Muhammad Bilal and Ahmed Bilal pled guilty in US District court to charges of conspiracy to provide services to the Taliban, and conspiracy to possess and discharge firearms in furtherance of crimes of violence. The Bilals planned to travel with co-conspirators from Portland to Afghanistan to assist the Taliban in fighting against the armed forces of the United States.
  • FACT: The Bilals admitted that during the summer of 2001, they and others trained in fighting and with firearms in rural areas of Oregon and Washington state to prepare for jihad in Afghanistan or elsewhere. Both flew to Hong Kong to make their way into Afghanistan, but were forced to turn back when they were unable to cross into Pakistan.
  • FACT: Maher “Mike” Hawash, their co-conspirator, pled guilty in August 2003 to conspiracy of knowingly and illegally supplying services “to the territory of Afghanistan controlled by the Taliban or to the Taliban” in violation of Executive Order 13129, which was issued by President Clinton on July 4, 1999.
  • FACT: Patrice Lumumba Ford worked in City Hall under the nose of Mayor Vera Katz, Adam’s mentor. His father, Kent Ford was a 1960’s leader in the Black Panthers. At Ford’s sentencing, Judge Robert E. Jones said he was convinced Ford would have done anything he could to make sure he killed an American in Afghanistan. Judge Jones told Ford, “You do not represent the Muslim faith. You are an insult to the Muslim faith. You’re no Nelson Mandela or anyone close to it.” Yet Patrice Ford was described as a “model intern” in the Katz administration. At least Beau Breedlove changed the standard for model legislative interns.
  • FACT: The Portland Seven investigation was conducted by the Portland FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, made up of members of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, Drug Enforcement Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Oregon State Police, the U.S. Postal Service, the Beaverton Police Department, the Port of Portland, the Vancouver Police Department, ICE (formerly INS), U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Coast Guard, and Federal Protective Services – and the Portland Police Bureau.
Where are the Portland Seven now? Though indicted, Habis al Saoub was never captured and tried in US courts. Justice was served, however, after he joined an al Qaeda cell and was killed by Pakistani forces in Afghanistan in October 2003. Ford and Battle are each serving eighteen-year sentences. Lewis was sentenced to three years in a work camp. Muhammad Bilal received an eight-year sentence, while Ahmed Bilal got ten years. Hawash was sentenced to only seven years after agreeing to testify against the others.
Those are facts Sam Adams and the city council can no longer ignore.

Who Set the Fire to Mo Mo’s Mosque? How About Giving Oregon the Same Benefit of the Doubt as the Bomber?

Hundreds of people gathered last night at the mosque where accused terrorist Mohamad Mohamud, Mo Mo, prayed during his time at Oregon State University (here). They came to denounce the attack on the mosque over the weekend and to offer the community’s support of the Muslim community. I denounce this attack as well, for what it’s worth.

The FBI is investigating the fire, which destroyed only the office as well as many of its records, as a possible hate crime and is offering a $10,000 reward.
This could have been done by a crack pot. Or hater. Or a drunk frat boy.The Muslim community is assuming it’s a retaliatory move by “Islamophobes.” Anything’s possible, I suppose, just ask the nuts in Woodburn who blew up a bank and some Woodburn police officers.
However, I think we need to be a bit more circumspect here.

  • Think of what happened after 9/11 to Oregon mosques. Nothing.
  • What happened to Oregon mosques after the Somali Islamist attack on our soldiers in the 1993 Black Hawk Down incident? Nothing.
  • What has happened to Oregon mosques in retaliation to Islamist Somali pirates? Nothing.
  • Think back at what happened after we discovered that seven terrorists came from one Portland mosque. Nothing.
  • What happened to the Portland Islamic Center this time when it was discovered Mo Mo also worshiped there (see post here)? Nothing.

Islam scholar Robert Spence of Jihad Watch told me yesterday, however, that the Muslim community has been known to stage “retaliatory” events to foment sympathy.  He notes the Muslim shop keeper in Seattle who set his shop on fire and cried Islamophobia! to the news media. It turns out it was just old fashioned insurance fraud. We see staged events in the middle east all the time. It’s known as Pallywood (here). The recent Wikileaks confirmed what we already knew about this staging when it released documents showing arms movements in ambulances–a favorite tool of the Pallywood set (here). He’s posted a story on the Oregon bomber case here.
Something that Sam Adams and the rest at City Hall should consider.

Mo Mo’s OTHER Mosque: Eight Terrorists in Ten Years.

Portland’s City Hall folks seem to be expending more energy allaying fears of Somalis and Muslims over possible reprisals than in allaying the fears of Portlanders who worry this community might produce another terrorist.

They would do well to remember that not one thing happened to the Islamic Center of Portland (Masjad As-Saber) after 9/11 nor after it was discovered to have been the spiritual home of the Portland Seven (here).

Perhaps Sam Adams should have a Kumbaya session with the Imam of this mosque as it turns out this little community has produced its EIGHTH terrorist in the past ten years.
It turns out that as a kid at Jackson Middle School, Mohamad Mohamud (Mo Mo), would leave school to pray at the Masjad As-Saber nearby at SW 43rd Avenue.
One father told me that his son, a classmate of Mo Mo’s, said the young Mohamud was grumpy and surly even at that age.

Mo Mo 5th Grade KATU Photo

It would also be nice if Sam Adams would have a little discussion with the head Imam to find out what the heck is in the water over there. And here is a merely rhetorical question for the folks at City Hall: Would Sam Adams go out of his way to have a meeting with “European*”-and-other-hyphenated-Americans if we felt ‘victimized’ by somebody from the Muslim community who wanted to blow us up?

Post Mo Mo: Portland Comforting Somali "Victims"

Portland Mayor Sam Adams has been so busy placating the Somali population of Portland it sounds like he’s forgotten that one of their members tried to blow up 25,000 (or so he thought) of our citizens. The “European Americans” (as Adams calls white people) watched “The Tree” lighting (see previous posts here and here ) alongside other hyphenated Americans, but apparently the plot to kill thousands of his constituents is a mere side show to the concern that someone burned the office at Mo Mo’s mosque in Corvallis. Adams wants to make sure the Somali population doesn’t feel victimized.

Adams is giving the 19 year old man and the Somali community the the benefit of the doubt, so why don’t we give the benefit of the doubt to tolerant Oregonians who did NOTHING to Oregon mosques after 9/11, NOTHING to mosques following the 1993 murders of our soldiers (sent to help Somalis) in the Black Hawk Down incident, who did NOTHING to mosques after repeated Somali pirate attacks on westerners, who did NOTHING to PORTLAND MOSQUES after the attempted bombing of Portlanders?
Let’s also wait and see if the FBI ever finds out who set fire to the office of the Corvallis mosque and whether or not it was an inside job to draw attention away from the fact that another Muslim named Mohamad tried to kill innocent Americans.

[emphasis added]

Dear Portlander,
Last Friday night, federal law enforcement authorities, working side-by-side with their counterparts at the Portland Police Bureau, apprehended a suspect intent on detonating a car bomb just as thousands of Portlanders were attending a tree-lighting celebration in Portland’s living room, Pioneer Courthouse Square. The good, patient and persistent work of our law enforcement professionals must not go without our sincere appreciation.
As the justice system moves forward with its work, we Portlanders have a number of important conversations ahead of us.
First, we must ensure that lines of communication with all our communities of color and faith remain open and honest. Last night, Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Police Chief Mike Reese and I sat down with more than 50 leaders from Portland-area mosques and the Somali community, business owners, academics, faith leaders and average citizens.
At that meeting, safety and security was a shared priority among all in the room, as evidenced by the apparent arson attack on a mosque in Corvallis over the weekend. Community representatives voiced their trust in the Portland Police Bureau and the working relationship they have with their law enforcement professionals. From the point of view of the Muslim community, it was important to make clear that the acts of one individual do not speak for or represent the beliefs of the Muslim and Somali communities.
Second, we must take a thorough, fact-based approach to deciding whether to rejoin the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Clearly, both elected leaders and regular citizens have questions about what it would mean for Portland, and I am already asking those same questions. As I sit down with the FBI, the ACLU, and other organizations in the coming days, I expect clear and compelling answers to these complex questions. We, your elected officials, will make a decision in the best interest of the city, and based on the due diligence a decision like this demands.
And third, we must continue to live our lives in Portland with all the energy and sincerity that makes Portland a unique city. Retailers downtown are open for business, from the pop-up store to the department store and every store in-between. Even this past weekend, immediately after the events of Friday night came to light, Portlanders in droves were shopping at Pioneer Place and spending time at Pioneer Square.
“Our sales were significantly up this past weekend compared to the same time last year,” reports Downtown Retail Council Chair William Palmer, general manager of Brooks Brothers. “We were excited to see so many people downtown visiting stores and shopping for gifts that you can only find in  downtown Portland. The holiday excitement will continue throughout the season with over 50 events at the Square and throughout Downtown.”
The Holiday Ale Festival, one of Portland’s best craft brewing celebrations, begins tomorrow, Wednesday, December 1 at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Events at the Square and around downtown Portland will continue throughout the Holiday Season, and Portlanders can be confident in the knowledge their city is taking all the necessary steps to ensure their safety and security.
The past several days have been trying for our City and its residents. I look forward to the open and respectful dialogue that is ahead for us.
Sincerely,
Sam Adams
