What Newspapers Does Obama Read? Not the WSJ, Obviously….

because instead of putting forward his destroy-the-American-economy ideas at Copenhagen (see below), he would know that his grandiose cap-and-tax-cap-and-trade-carbon-tax ideas would result in this:

…Corus, Europe’s second-largest steel producer, is shuttering a giant U.K. steelmaking plant at Redcar, cutting 1,700 jobs. Corus blames the recession that has cut steel demand and says the British government hasn’t done enough to help it.
Whatever the truth of that, there’s little doubt that cap and trade made the closure much easier. The decline in steel production means European steelmakers have surplus carbon allowances. According to Carbon Market Data, a European research firm, in 2008 Corus had the second largest surplus of EU carbon allowances—7.5 million.
Corus will also profit if it moves the production to India.
Corus was bought in 2007 by Tata, India’s largest steel company. The Indian steel industry is set to more than double production to some 124 million tons a year by 2011-2012. Were Corus to move production to a “clean” Indian factory, it could receive hundreds of millions of dollars annually from the Clean Development Fund. The kicker is that none of this results in fewer carbon emissions.
We should add that all of this is precisely what Kyoto envisioned. The idea is to tax Western industry and then send the proceeds to developing countries as an incentive to join the anticarbon crusade.

To summarize: Cap and trade is a scheme that would impose heavy carbon taxes and allowances on U.S. industries, which would then have an incentive to move overseas themselves, or to sell those allowances to overseas companies that could use them to become more competitive against U.S. companies. Like the 1,700 Brits at Redcar, American workers would be the big losers.

Administration Claims Climate Deal Reached

Of course, under conditions of anonymity, an Obama administration official said, “a meaningful agreement was reached,” between Obama and the leaders of China, India and South Africa. “It’s not sufficient to combat the threat of climate change, but it’s an important first step,” the official said.

IER
Victoria here. So I’ve read the “agreement” which really only runs  three pages and here are the highlights:

The science is settled on Global Warming (Climate Change).
It’s urgent we DO something.
We agree that the first world will reduce global emissions by 50% by 2050 from 1990 levels.
We agree that first world nations will buy off the third world nations with at least $30,000,000,000 to help them out because we’ll destroy those fledgling economies (well, they don’t say that, but that’s why we have to pay them off).
Annex I parties have to be Hans Blixed (inspected)
Non Annex I parties will just get to measure their own emissions and write it down in a book and tell Hans Blix
They may use cap and tax.
More payoffs for other countries

Freedom Works: Harry Reid Chooses 1am Vote on Monday Morning for Health Care

From Freedom Works:

It looks like after all the gamesmanship and back-door dealings that the Left has tried in order to sneak ObamaCare through, Harry Reid is finally ready to show his cards and bring the bill to the floor.

FreedomWorks has learned that it is Reid’s intention to bring up the decisive cloture vote for the Left’s proposed government takeover of America’s health care system at 1:00 AM Monday Morning. What’s the rush? Maybe the fact that Obama, Reid, and Pelosi have failed to broker a deal to pass their socialist reform bill, or that more and more public opinion polls are indicating that American’s do not want it. Whatever the reason, the Left is attempting one more full court press to pass ObamaCare and we must rally to stop them.

TAKE ACTION!

I know how hard you have worked all year to stop the hostile government takeover of health care. From the tea parties in the spring, to the historic 9-12 Taxpayer March on Washington, to the avalanche of phone calls, emails, letters, and face-to-face visits that have hit Congressional offices over the last few weeks, your voice has been a key part of this opposition and it is the reason the fight has lasted as long as it has. But we can’t back-off now as the fight reaches its climax.

As I write this email, Reid has still not been able to make a deal that would get the necessary 60 votes and allow him to pass ObamaCare. However, our sources tell us that he may only be 1 or 2 votes away. This weekend the forces of the big government Left will be lighting up the phone boards of Congressional Offices as they remain in session and await the early morning vote on Monday. Use FreedomWorks Online War Room to counter their efforts over the next 48 hours.

The War Room is equipped with timely information and cutting edge technology that will enable you to quickly contact the handful of Senators we believe could be the deciding votes on ObamaCare and urge them to VOTE NO.

Imagine if you wake up on Monday morning and ObamaCare has passed. Wouldn’t you like another chance to place one last urgent call, send one last email, or show up to your Senators’ district offices one last time to demonstrate your support for keeping America’s health care system free?

Study: Stimulus Benefited Democrat Districts More

While ignoring high unemployment within predominantly Republican Districts.

“Democratic districts have received nearly twice as much stimulus money as Republican districts and the cash has been awarded without regard to how badly an area was suffering from job losses, according to a new study.”

“The Mercatus Center at George Mason University reviewed the distribution of $157 billion in stimulus dollars based on publicly available reports and found that there was “no statistical correlation” between the amount of money a district got and its income or unemployment rate.”

What was all that nonsense last year about Obama bringing America together again?

Has the closure of so many Auto Dealers that donated to Republican candidates over Democratic candidates been forgotten?

Should this regime succeed in highjacking our health care system, will Democrats benefit while American citizens that support the Republicans be left to suffer?

Why Tiger Woods Makes More Than Teachers

“It’s not so much a ripple effect as it is a tsunami. The aura is gone.” A former CBS executive in this story about Tiger Woods.

From executive pay to pay for athletes, people who bag on capitalism always say that teachers should be paid more than athletes and that guys on the line should make close to what the CEO makes. Teachers are valuable perhaps, good teachers are invaluable, no doubt. Let’s stipulate it right now. But one teacher out of many during a lifetime has much less effect on a kid than one an athlete, Tiger Woods, has on his sport. And the guy on the line makes widgets, but the strategic thinking in the corner office may make them more valuable.
The point? These folks earn what they get. If a teacher doesn’t work the district gets a sub, if Tiger doesn’t work people lose their jobs. And here’s the proof with one example: Tiger Woods.
Quoting supporting data and experts, this is what  Bloomberg (here) reports will be the loss while Tiger is off tending to his mistresses and parrying his wife’s divorce attorney:

Tournament crowds may be 20 percent smaller
Television audiences may shrink by half.
Nike could lose more than $30 million in sales [that’s Oregon jobs, folks]
The PGA Tour’s ad revenue may be off by 40% if he stays out entire year.
Merchandise sales at PGA Tour events will drop.*
Prize money may go down or stagnate.**
Charity events will lose money. ***

*The PGA Tour, with 2008 total revenue of $981 million, runs merchandise booths that usually sell out of the Nike garb he wears for a given day. Before Tiger, sales totaled about $300 million, according to the tour.

**Woods’s presence has helped prize money quadruple to almost $280 million in 2009 from $70 million in 1997, his first full professional season.

***He used his celebrity to stage charity tournaments such as this month’s Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, California. In 2007, the tour raised $124 million for charity, up from $40 million in 1996.
