AP & Politico: Brian Baird NOT Seeking Re-Election

Don’t know why yet. Calls are going out. Tune in this afternoon on the show and watch this space for updates.
I’m still trying to track this down on the “why” question.
Was it too much pressure from Pelosi after he signed the discharge petition with Walden?
Was it too much pressure from his announced opponents in a year that will see gains by Republicans?
Did he want to get out now instead of going down with the Obama ship?
Is there a personal issue he’s not telling us?
Is Pelosi running someone against him in the primary or withdrawing NDCC funds?

No Impeachment For Sanford

South Carolina lawmakers have defeated a measure to impeach and oust governor Mark Sanford due to his summertime tryst and his use of state aircraft.

Fox News

Lawyers described the conduct as “morally reprehensible” but not impeachable.

A District Judge said that although his behavior was boorish and offensive it did not meet the necessary standards.

The accused said, “I know that my public comments and my silence about this matter gave a false impression. I misled people, including even my wife. I deeply regret that.”

After the vote for non-impeachment he said, “Now that the Senate has fulfilled its constitutional responsibility, bringing this process to a conclusion, I want to say again to the people how profoundly sorry I am for what I said and did to trigger these events and the great burden they have imposed on the on the people.”

Oh wait, sorry, those were Bill Clinton, not Mark Sanford.

Oh well, I guess what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Too bad, we used to hold officials to a moral standard before that.

Danish Scientists on Global Warming: It’s the Sun, Stupid

The rest here.

Professor Henrik Svensmark, a physicist at the Danish National Space Center in Copenhagen, said the recent warming period was caused by solar activity.
He said the last time the world experienced such high temperatures, during the medieval warming period, the Sun and the Earth were in a similar cycle.
Professor Nils-Axel Morner, a geologist from Stockholm University, said sea level rise has also been exaggerated by the “climate alarmists” using computer models.
He said observational data from lake sediments, coast lines and trees show sea levels have remained stable.

What Recession? $30,000,000.00 for "Zero Carbon" Rest Stops in Oregon. Oh, Yes, I’ll Be Talking About this on KPAM Today…

According to the Zero (here) today we’ve got the rest stop manned by SEVEN (7?!) NEW MANAGERS hired to oversee the refurbishment of eight (8) rest stops in Oregon, making it, according to Gail Achterman of the Oregon Transportation Commission, ‘the first zero-carbon footprint rest stops in the country.’
The headline in the Zero?

“Canby Man Will Welcome I-5 Travelers”

‘Scuse me? The man who’s heading up the rest stop in Wilsonville sounds like a great guy, by the way. Former house builder and fence builder who recently lost his job. He’ll be coming up with ideas on how to rework the rest stops to make them carbon neutral, but, seriously, $300m?
Oh, and don’t worry. That money is coming from the huge transportation tax increase the democrats socked us with in the last legislative session.
I’ll be talking about this on the show this afternoon.

90% in New Poll DON’T WANT Government Health Care. Get it?

Check out the poll results below on the “Blame Bush” weariness that’s taken over the electorate since Obama decided to blame everything on him. But check this out. Once again h/t to Congressional Quarterly.

Support for Obama on health care has hit another new low with just 39% of voters now expressing approval of his health care plans and 52% opposed. 90% of respondents who said they were opposed to Obama’s plan said it was because it involved the government too much in health care with just 6% saying their opposition was because it didn’t create enough government involvement. This would seem to refute other recent polling that suggested a large amount of opposition to Obama on health care was coming from the left.

Poll: "It’s All G-4-3’s Fault" Doesn’t Wash Anymore

H/T Congressional Quarterly. Here’s the poll.
Don’t forget to look at the health care numbers: 90% don’t want more government in health care!
But look at the numbers for the subject of this blog post:

Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama’s declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they’d rather have his predecessor. Given the horrendous approval ratings Bush showed during his final term that’s somewhat of a surprise and an indication that voters are increasingly placing the blame on Obama for the country’s difficulties instead of giving him space because of the tough situation he inherited. The closeness in the Obama/Bush numbers also has implications for the 2010 elections. Using the Bush card may not be particularly effective for Democrats anymore, which is good news generally for Republicans and especially ones like Rob Portman who are running for office and have close ties to the former President.

Rees Lloyd in the Courtroom on Veterans Memorials Crosses Case

He’s on today at 6:35. But he sent me a quick note about some observations today:

Best moment at hearing: Judge Pregerson, presiding judge of thee-judge panel, at the close of argument and submission of the case, looked out and saw the public seats filled with American Legion veterans, including individual American Legion Riders and Patriot Guard Riders.
For several long seconds Pregerson said nothing, then asked, “Well, are we going to have close order drill or something?” A Legionnaire shot back: “Yes, your Honor. I’d be glad to lead a drill to protect our veterans memorials from these attacks by the ACLU. These memorials honor our brothers and sisters.” A fine moment.
