Obama Pauses to Remember War Dead…On the Golf Course

From ABC News:

“I ask you to ring a bell or offer a prayer, say a silent thank you, and commit to give something back to this nation, something lasting in their memory, to affirm in our own lives and advance around the world those enduring ideals of justice, equality and opportunity for which they and so many generations of Americans have given that last full measure of devotion,” Obama said this morning at Arlington National Cemetery.

For President Obama that moment came in the middle of a round of golf at Ft. Belvoir inVirginia.

The president spent around four hours on the links this afternoon — arriving around 1:30 and leaving just before 5:30 — staying in Washington after the ceremony at Arlington instead of flying back to Camp David as he was originally scheduled.

White House aides told reporters that the president paused at 3 p.m. to observe a moment of silent prayer.

THE VINDICATION OF CARBON MEANS THE VINDICATION OF HUMAN FREEDOM

May 2009

Robert D. Brinsmead

The evidence is piling up every day that the world is now getting cooler instead of warmer, the oceans are now cooling instead of warming, the ice is returning to the Arctic rather than receding, the sea ice in the Antarctic is at record levels, and that rising sea levels have moderated. The sun has recently gone into a less active phase of fewer sun-spots, and the ocean decadal currents have changed from a warming to a cooling phase.

Before too long the global warming scare will be as dead as the scares about the Y2 bug or acid rain. Already some of the global warming alarmists, anticipating this may soon happen, are re-inventing their alarmism into the scare about the oceans becoming acidified by our CO2 emissions – even though the oceans already contains 90 times more CO2 than the atmosphere (Chilingar, et.al.)Beyond all these things, however, we need to get to what this debate and this climate change alarmism is really all about.

Beyond all this alarmism about global warming or ocean acidification, we need to see that on a deeper level it is a debate about carbon, and when we dig into that level of the debate we will finally see that behind the demonization of carbon and CO2, it is all about an attack on humanity itself.

Global warming alarmism is not a science, but a religio/political movement. This paper will show why it a dangerous totalitarian ideology and a more serious threat to human freedom than Communism or Nazism. It is also like a bad joke, because carbon just happens to be the most wonderful of all the elements in the periodic table because of its ability to make so many organic compounds that are fundamental to the formation of life. Yet here is a movement that is all about demonizing carbon.

Germany Says "Nein!" On Crap and Trade/Crap and Tax

The Weekly Standard has it here:

Germany Abandons Cap and Trade for Major Industries

Just as the Obama administration and its allies in Congress try to ram through cap and trade legislation, European countries are moving to exempt entire industries from the regulation lest they simply relocate their operations to more business-friendly nations. The Financial Times reports:

Berlin is preparing to help domestic industries overcome the economic crisis by cutting the electricity bills of the country’s largest energy users.

Aluminium, copper and zinc producers are among energy-intensive industrial sectors that could benefit from the plans, which are set to be agreed ahead of elections in September….

The bulk of any relief is likely to be found by reimbursing companies for the cost of carbon dioxide emissions trading certificates that utilities currently price into their electricity bills.

Berlin successfully argued at an EU summit in December that energy-intensive industries should be not be forced to buy emission permits between 2013 and 2020 because companies would shift production overseas. It now wants to go further by compensating energy-intensive companies in the intervening years. Officials are also considering whether to reward big power consumers for their role in balancing the electricity network during peak-load periods.

Cali Prop 8 Ban on Gay Marriage Upheld

How do uphold the law passed by voters while still allowing the 18,000 same sex marriages to stand? Still puzzling through that one. Doesn’t that establish two classes of people?
This is going back on the ballot.

LAT reports the California Supreme Court had these three things to look at :

  • whether Proposition 8 amounts to an impermissible revision of the state Constitution
  • the attorney general’s challenge contending that marriage is an “inalienable” right that can’t be taken away without compelling justification
  • and the fate of existing same-sex marriages

Backgrounder from LAT:

  • After San Francisco officials began allowing same-sex couples to wed there in 2004, the courts intervened, invalidating the marriages on grounds that local officials had overstepped their authority.
  • But in May 2008, the California Supreme Court ruled that the state Constitution protects a fundamental “right to marry” that extends to same-sex couples.
  • That made California the second state in the union, after Massachusetts, to permit same-sex marriage.
  • About 18,000 gay and lesbian couples married between June and November, when voters approved Proposition 8, which amended the state Constitution to recognize marriage as only between a man and woman.
  • Opponents of Proposition 8 appealed to the California Supreme Court to overturn the ballot measure. They contend that the proposition changed the tenets of the state Constitution and therefore amounted to a revision, which can only be placed on the ballot by a two-thirds vote of the Legislature; Proposition 8 reached the ballot after a signature drive.

OBAMA SCOTUS CHOICE–Woman: Check. Hispanic: Check. Originalist: Not Even Close

President Obama said today that Sonia Sotomayor was named by the G-4-1. Indeed she was. Here’s why: a political deal between R’s and D’s. Read more here.
Here’s another observation early in the choice: Let’s get over picking someone because they’re a minority or woman. I think there are alot of folks out there who voted for Obama because he would be a historic choice. Well, it was, but not for the reason they’re thinking. He’s the most left leaning President we’ve had since Wilson and FDR. Please judge people by the content of their character, their previous judicial decisions (for judges), and her judicial temperament. What does she think of the US Constitution? Is it malleable, a “living” document, or does it represent the bumpers between which our social compacts exists? I vote for the latter. She’s for the former (see below). She went to private school. Wonder if she’s for school choice?
