Sam Adams: No Confidence from Police Association

The Police Officers Association has asked Sam Adams to resign. Sam said he’d take a pass on that.
The news conference was quite a show. In 14 years or so that I’ve been back in the People’s Republic , I’ve never seen that many reporters at City Hall. Arrayed against one wall was the contingent from the Zero. Better late than never, I guess. Anna Griffin, David Sarasohn, Jeff Mapes, Steve Duin, Jack Ohman (no idea why) were there to take stock of the proceedings. They got there late and left early (and, as I suspected, got a private meeting with Sam).
The most bizarre questions came from the Indy Media guy (rocking a Barack Obama button) next to the POA secretary.
At one point Mr. Indy Media asked Sam if he’d like to apologize to Amanda Fritz. The rest of us learned why he singled her out when she strode from the wings to the podium and proceeded to tell us that she’d been a psychiatric nurse for 26 years and that people lie all the time and give the guy a break and you’re really screwing up Barack Obama’s inauguration and doggone it why did you break the story now. Silence. Then some courageous (or did I mean comedic) scribe from behind a camera asked, “was there a better day to do this?”

I went to Randy Leonard’s office to get his reaction. Randy’s been Sam’s aide de camp in so many wrong headed ideas and I’d heard that Leonard wanted an “investigation” into the incident that I thought I’d better talk to him.
Aside from the fact that Randy called him “Big Love” as opposed to his name “Breedlove,” (“Aw, what’s the difference?”) he was cranky that Adams had lied to him. Randy wasn’t upset that Sam had apparently been grooming a kid to have sex with, he was upset that Sam had asked the kid to lie. I asked the obvious (I thought) question about the appropriateness and morality of the situation, you know, as a father, and he went off about how it’s immoral that 18 year olds go off to Iraq to serve their country. For Randy apparently a kid willing to serve his country is the same as a kid willing to service the mayor.

Sam says there may be a time when he would consider resigning. That time is not now according to him.

Is This Apology Good Enough?

The Secretary of Portland Police Officers Association Asks Sam to resign. Sam said ‘no.’

In this story at KGW TV, the story shows Adams protesting the Bob Ball accusation about having sex with a teenager saying,

“this is one of the, you know, worst smears, you can say against a gay guy. It preys on the homophobic stereotype that gay men cannot be trusted with–young people.”

Adams admits to enlisting Beau Breedlove, then 18, into lying about the nature of the relationship.
What’s worse? The sex with an 18 year old kid or getting him to lie for you about it when you were supposedly mentoring him?
I’ll be covering the Adams news conference today and have more this afternoon on the show (Victoria Taft, 5-8pm KPAM 860).
The following is Sam’s apology. Should it be good enough?

“I want to publicly acknowledge a mistake I have made and I want to apologize for it.
“In the past, I have characterized my relationship with Beau Breedlove as purely non-sexual. That is not true. Beau Breedlove and I had a sexual relationship for a few months in the summer of 2005 after he turned 18 years of age.
“I should have been honest at the time about the true nature of my relationship with Beau Breedlove when questions about my relationship with him first surfaced publicly in October 2007. In fact, Beau encouraged me to be honest about the facts of our relationship. I am deeply sorry that I asked him to lie for me.
“I lied at the time because I was afraid that people would believe untrue rumors, being circulated by an undeclared mayoral opponent, that I had broken a law involving sexual relations with a minor. But this is not a good excuse.
“Until today, with the exception of Beau, I have not discussed with anyone the true nature of my relationship with him: not with my colleagues, staff, friends or family.
“I apologize to Beau for asking him to lie for me. I apologize to my colleagues for my poor handling of this matter. I apologize to the people of Portland for my dishonesty. I should have been truthful from the beginning.

Mayor Sam Adams”

Speech here.

They didn’t steal the furniture
Steal buttons on keyboards
Shut them out.
He didn’t shame the office.
He didn’t get ‘serviced’ in the Oval Office
He didn’t rip anyone off in a land deal
Didn’t have a political enemies list; stealing names from the FBI
He didn’t sell the Lincoln bedroom
He gave the Obamas room to transition into the job
And then he left.
Thank you George W Bush. You protected our country, fought hard for our freedom, fought hard to regain the muscularity of the office which was given in the constitution and frittered away by previous Presidents.
History will treat you kindly.
I didn’t agree with you on everything but you did not disgrace us.
