In the latest quid pro quo to union members who only reluctantly backed Kulo the Guv's second term, the democrats controlling the "E" board voted to give Oregon's newest employees big raises.

Apparently, there's no financial constraints if you're a democrat guv who owes political favors to the democrat controlled unions.

Consolidation accomplished.

“The absolute wrong time to increase the cost of Oregon government is while Oregon families are seeing the cost of food, fuel and housing spiral out of control, with jobs more difficult to find each week,” said Senator Doug Whitsett ( R-Klamath Falls ). “We should be saving and finding ways to cut expenses. If legislative leaders think an economic slowdown is the appropriate time to hand out pay increases, they should find a way to pay for it by cutting waste in existing budgets, not spending down the state’s savings account.”

Planners to Vancouver: Light Rail or You Get Nothing

But it's always good to look back at some of the assumptions made about mass transit and especially light rail. Because it isn't what it's cracked up to be. Our friend Randal O'Toole, a bicycle enthusiast, free market transportation expert, and Oregon resident, who works for the Cato Institute recently writes about St. Louis' light rail system:

Despite investing hundreds of millions of dollars into light rail, the share of St. Louis-area commuters using transit has actually declined to 2.8 percent today from 6.9 percent in 1979.

Metro's buses today consume more energy and emit more greenhouse gases, per passenger mile, than a typical sport utility vehicle. Its light-rail lines do better, but consume almost as much energy, and emit almost as much greenhouse gas, per passenger mile, as the average car.

Moreover, even where rail operations do save energy, this savings almost never makes up for the huge energy cost of rail construction. Highway construction also consumes energy, but because highways are more heavily used than rail lines, their energy cost per passenger mile is far lower.

On his western swing yesterday, Barack Obama announced his plans to overburden most small business, ensure people will be laid off, and that your kid will not be able to get a summer job in the future, with one statement:

He doesn't get it. But people who believe in equal outcomes instead of equal opportunity, who have never signed the front of a check but only the back, and who play the 'get the man' card seldom do.

While I was taking pictures Monday at the Portland Illegal Alien Kollection Operation and Detention Center (P.I.N.K.O), a man looking for work said to me, "Hey, that's illegal!"
The irony was lost on him, alas. Maybe it was because Mayor Moonbeam and Rainbow City Council have given $200K plus in our tax dollars to aid and abet this illegal behavior that it gave him the veneer of legality and that anything done to expose this was illegal. I don't know.
What I do know is that it is illegal for these illegal alien workers to be here. I know that if they're legal workers there are dozens of temp agencies around to use--the city doesn't need to do this for citizens. I know that it is illegal to hire illegal aliens and that is it against the law to 'jack someone's ID.
And what good has this day labor center done? Nothing. There are still nearby corners teeming with illegal aliens looking for day labor jobs. So we still have the illegals, even more are encouraged to come by the city, AND they're still hanging out by the businesses that wanted them moved to the P.I.N.K.O Detention Center.

President Bush Makes Historic Nomination

Lost in the BDS thrown around about President Bush is the many first of nominations he has submitted. The first Black Secretary of State, the first Black Female Secretary of State, the first Hispanic Attorney General and so on.

He has now added yet another first by nominating, for the first time in our history, the very first female for Four Star General.

Due to past regulations women have been denied the highest General Rank of the Military, but that has changed. Lt. Gen. Dunwoody said,

"I am very honored but also very humbled today with this announcement. I grew up in a family that didn't know what glass ceilings were. This nomination only reaffirms what I have known to be true about the military throughout my career ... that the doors continue to open for men and women in uniform."

Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody must be confirmed by the Democrat Majority Senate, who has shown a proclivity to hold up some of the President's nominations.

It remains to be seen if President Bush will receive any credit for yet another milestone in advancing minorities.

Obama Unveils Presidential Seal

For all those Obama Supporters salivating over their false messiah, his campaign today unveiled a new "Presidential Seal" to hang on podiums he speaks at, just like a real President.



Not exactly like the United States Presidential Seal used by all Presidents, but a close fascimile.

E Pluribus Unum, Out of many, one, is replaced with Vero Possumus, roughly translated from Latin as "Yes We Can."

The Eagle on the regular Presidential seal has a shield over the eagles breast, but Obama's has his “O” campaign logo with a rising sun.



About the only thing missing is some representation of the 57 states.

Colonel Charged in Haditha will be Retried

...That's according to his attorney from the Thomas More Law Center to whom I spoke this afternoon. He'd received the info on the appeal of the dismissal of charges five minutes before I talked to him.
To say Lt Colonel Jeffrey Chessani is crestfallen is an understatement. It appears that in their haste to find a scape goat for this incident, prosecutors are refiling charges. Why do you need a scapegoat for an incident that was sad, but not criminal? A day long fire fight in which insurgents and terrorists use women and children as cover--sad, but not criminal.
Why do this?
Chessani will go back to his desk job at Camp Pendleton while awaiting the appeal. He deserves our support. He did nothing wrong and neither did our other Marines whose charges have been dropped in this matter. One more Marine is awaiting trial.

Lt Col Chessani’s official 2006 Combat Fitness Report declared him “a superb leader, who knows his men, knows the enemy, knows his business, ” and recommended him for promotion. The reviewing Major General added, Lt Col Chessani has “unlimited potential and value to the Marine Corps, ” and also recommended him for promotion.

The following quotes are excerpts from Lt Col Chessani’s Combat Fitness Report (a required annual evaluation of a Marine officer’s performance) prepared by his superiors for the reporting period of September 2005 to February 2006 (This time period includes the date of the incident for which Lt. Colonel Chessani is facing criminal charges):

This may sound like ancient history, but it matters. After Sept. 11, President Bush did not want to risk allowing Hussein, who had twice invaded neighboring nations, murdered more than 1 million Iraqis and stood in violation of 16 U.N. Security Council resolutions, to remain in possession of what he believed were stocks of chemical and biological warheads and a nuclear weapons program. By glossing over this history, the Democrats' lies-led-to-war narrative provides false comfort in a world of significant dangers.

Col. Steven Folsom dismissed charges against Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani after finding that a four-star general overseeing the case was improperly influenced by an investigator probing the November 2005 shootings by a Marine squad in Haditha.

BDS Hits Clark County Airwaves

In perhaps the most blatant display of the sheer hatred of George W. Bush I have seen yet, he is now being blamed for the proposed Cowlitz Tribal Casino near Ridgefield, Washington.

The Casino proposal has met with stiff opposition from The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, owners of the Spirit Mountain Casino, who claim building the new Casino would “devastate” their own Casino revenues.

Their opposition has sunk to new lows now by playing on the contrived hatred of President Bush by claiming it is he who plans to ruin Clark County by building the Casino, in the following TV commercial currently showing on Clark County cable.



The Grand Ronde bases this blatant misrepresentation upon an environmental impact statement released recently that could clear the way for a Casino.

George Bush has nothing whatsoever to do with the EIS, as would no other President, if they were seated in office.

In a blatant attempt at manipulating the public through the perceived and contrived sheer hatred of President Bush, the Grand Ronde once again sets their target, not based on truth, but on perceptions that backfired when they heavily opposed La Centers Mayor Jim Irish in his last bid for reelection, which he won by a landslide.

Almost comical, as is seen in the commercial is the ending, which calls on viewers to “Tell our leaders to stand up to Bush. Oppose the casino. Time is running out,” then lists 4 Democrats who have no history of siding with President Bush.

With tactics such as this, Ridgefield is sure to enjoy a Casino in the near future.

and property law, Wood has developed a theory that claims the atmosphere is an
asset that belongs to all but is held in trust by the government. The government
has a legal obligation to protect that trust from harm, she argues, just as
financial managers have a legal obligation to protect the monetary assets in
their care.

We'll take the last one first: Congress hasn't written any statutes on
atmospheric obligation because, one, there has been no compelling reason to do
so, and, two, Congress simply does not have the constitutional authorization to
get involved in such matters. Wood is a lawyer; she should know that.
As for
that unfolding catastrophe, the only people who are seeing it are those whose
political goals rely on there being one and who have eagerly and gullibly bought
into the man-made global warming theory.
If Wood can find judges who will take her seriously, expect a plague of freewheeling lawsuits filed to force the government to shut down construction of new coal-fired power plants and airport expansions, limit motorized recreation and require the use of renewable energy, to name a few backward-looking thoughts that are filling her mind.

Obama may have thought all of his interactions with Rezko were above-board,
but they weren’t. One of the counts against Rezko detailed how he funneled the
proceeds of an illegal kickback scheme into Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign.
Rezko’s co-conspirator, a former trustee of the Illinois Teachers Retirement
System (TRS) named Stuart Levine, told the jury that he directed the TRS to
invest $50 million with a firm called Glencoe Capital. In exchange, Levine
arranged for himself and Rezko to be paid a fraudulent $500,000 “finder’s fee.”
Levine routed Rezko’s half to an associate named Joseph Aramanda in March of
2004. That month, Aramanda wrote a $10,000 check to Barack Obama’s campaign.
Of course, Obama may well not have known the details of such a shadowy
transaction, and his campaign has donated that $10,000 — and all other
Rezko-related money — to charity. But what became clear over the course of the
Rezko trial is that this kind of scheme exemplified Rezko’s way of doing
business. It’s hard to believe that Obama could be so clueless about Rezko’s
character, just as it’s hard to believe that Obama sat in Jeremiah Wright’s pews
for 20 years and had no idea that the man was a radical black nationalist.

I often tell the story on the air about how inspired I was by Mario Cuomo's speech at the 1984 Democratic Convention. I was moved because I believed the speech conveyed the essence of the Democratic party.
Since this was before Al Gore invented the internet, I had to wait until Vital Speeches of the Day printed the speech. I was thrilled when I located it. I ensconced myself in a comfy chair and prepared to drink in the rhetorical greatness that no doubt awaited me.
And when I finally got a real look at it there was---nothing. The speech was air. Devoid of content. There was no soul or essence communicated. I still appreciated Cuomo's soaring speechifying but couldn't help but be disappointed at the nothingness conveyed.
Now I know why I was reminded of that experience. Barack Obama ripped it off. See for yourself.

The Democratic party is about to nominate a far-left candidate in the tradition of Michael Dukakis, albeit without Dukakis’s executive experience as governor. The Democratic party is about to nominate a far left candidate in the tradition of John Kerry, albeit without Kerry’s record of years of service in the Senate. The Democratic party is about to nominate an unvetted candidate in the tradition of Jimmy Carter, albeit without Jimmy Carter’s religious integrity as he spoke about it in 1976. Questions about all these attributes (from foreign policy expertise to executive experience to senatorial experience to judgment about foreign leaders to the instructors he has had in his cultural values) surround Barack Obama. And the Democratic party has chosen him.

From a recent IBD editorial:

A report released Thursday by the Department of the Interior notes that most of the oil and 40% of the natural gas under public lands in the U.S. is off-limits to drilling. That's about 19 billion barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas.

A separate report, this one from the International Energy Agency, warned of a looming global supply crunch resulting from the failure of governments — not private oil companies — to invest more or open up their lands for exploration and development.

One of the oil business's dirty secrets is that only 6% of all reserves are controlled by investor-owned oil companies such as those demonized by Congress. The rest are controlled by governments, one way or another. And 11 of the 15 largest oil companies are government-owned. Government is the problem, not "Big Oil."
