legal, illegal, who knows what the actual status of the people going to the day labor center, I see the logic that if they are here legally they can go to any temp agency to find work. However, most temp agencies take a pretty good chunk of the pay, and the workers will have to work 8hr shifts, most of these people work 10-14hrs to make extra money. Now, the issue that they have stolen identities is hard to believe, if they really do have Identification from someone in the states, they would be at the temp agencies with American Identifications getting work. The issue of them being violent criminals, stupid, generalized assumptions make Americans look stupid. The guy that broke into my sisters house and killed their dog had glasses. Do I look at people with glasses with suspicion? No. Having said all this, I will not hire employees that have no idenification that is legitimate. And having been in business for long enough, its pretty easy to see who is here legally or not.
yes, as teh article asserts, it is true that it illegal to harbor illegal aliens. But, somehow, the site has not been found to be harboring them. I wonder how that is? Maybe noone has presented any legitimate proof that the city is doing so. Get proof people, not hyperbole.

As a political issue, immigrant bashing is completely dead. Tom Tancredo ran for president. His only platform: No one hates Mexicans more than I do. He showed up for a dozen debates and turned every single question, from Iraq to the environment, into a question about immigration. He never got above the 3 percent line. Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani got into an anti-immigrant pissing match in one debate. High profile, well funded candidates who were leading in many polls. Outta here in no time flat. There were plenty of other conservative choices with strong anti-immigrant positions: Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul, Sam Brownback, even Alan Keyes. In the end, the Republicans were left with two choices. John McCain, who who co-sponsored a bill with Teddy Kennedy to create a guest worker program and create a pathway to citizenship for immigrants already living and working here. Mike Huckabee, an ordained minister who honesty believes in Christ's message: love you neighbor as yourself. Everyone is your neighbor. Treat them with compassion.
Immigrant hatred failed miserably as a political issue within the Republican party. No if ands or buts. It's dead.
My assumption is this: having elected the most conservative president in three quarters of a century and then watched him fail miserably, the conservative movement needs something, anything, to distract attention from real issues. We're bankrupting our country on a hopeless quagmire in Iraq. Our economy is in shambles, our health care and educational systems need serious reforms, and our energy needs for the future must be addressed. Let's not talk about this. Let's call names at some people from Mexico who are willing to work at hard manual labor for eight bucks an hour. It's a lot easier than addressing your own failures.

TNR, nice try, if you were really in business, you would be hiring people that had complete proof of citizenship, long before any question ever came up. It actually is easy to elimate potential employees that cannot provide that proof. I ask my managment to see Social Security card, Photo ID like drivers license, and Tax returns that correspond with addresses and numbers. Most people that have any problems with providing this information dont want to work for me. But many have no problems with it and I have some excellent employees that never mention unionizing.

What you got, was one biased side of the story.
I am not saying that anything said was false, just that I have been fooled before into thinking a serious injustice was occurring, and then later when I learned the fact, realized I had been manipulated with subsets of the truth designed and presented in a way, that made their most likely interpretation false.
I was arrested at the illegal day labor site for "disorderly conduct" - a valid and easily provable charge. My defense will be the "lesser of two evils" defense. In other words, my sitting and blocking the driveway is patently less evil than the harboring of illegal aliens and the violation of federal laws by our locally elected officials.
I will subpoena Tom Potter, Randy Leonard, Dan Saltzman and Eric Sten. I will ask them the same question, "Did you knowingly violate at least four federal laws when you created the day labor center?" I have irrefutable proof they did. I have already notified these four individuals of my intentions. I'm revealing my game plan ahead of time because; 1)They can't defend it, and 2)I want them to squirm.
I'm not concerned, even the slightest, about the verdict in my trial. It's what happens to our four law breaking elected officials and what happens to the illegal day labor site that matters.
Please quit trying to make this a racial, nationality, bigotry or compassion issue. It's not. The LAW is my driving force.

I know you do not know me personaly,but I do own a nursery business .I am an auto tech by day and have a small nuresry for the weekends !It might only be three acres but it keeps me busy , The only thing I can not do is dig the trees. So when I went to hire some guys to dig they would not give me any ID they only wanted cash!!! Yes I sent them opn ther way . Dr. Martin Luther King was one of the true heroes of this country. He was not assassinated while he was working on civil rights. By 1968 all of the major pieces of civil rights legislation were in place. He turned his attention to economic justice: something he called the Poor People's Campaign. It sought to bring together poor working people of all colors to demand economic justice. He'd barely begun the campaign when he was assassinated. The powers that rule this country can live with racial equality. They will not tolerate economic equality. I fear that if the poor masses of this country ever do rise up and demand economic justice, the tanks of fascism will roll across American soil and our government will open fire on its own people. Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney have already walked this nation a long way down the dark road to fascism.
We also agree on another point. You know nothing of the history of Mexico. I will repeat myself: the people of Mexico have fought longer and harder for justice in their own country than any other nation on earth. The tragedy of the country is that they continually lose. Almost every leader who could have given them a chance at prosperity and a decent government has been killed by war, political turmoil, or assassination. Three hundred years of Spanish colonial rule cannot be erased in a day. Having Texas, California, New Mexico, and Arizona taken from them in a horrible unjust war did not help either.
Even if you don't want to bother with a history book, you could look at recent stuff. Vicente Fox was the first leader of Mexico elected in a real and fair election in many decades. The last election was sadly another Bush-Gore tie with the exact same result. The dumb guy who stole the election and represents the status quo and the old power structure wound up in office. At least the opposition in Mexico did not roll over and die and give up when an election was stolen from them, the way Gore and Kerry did when they were robbed.

The millions of Mexican immigrants and thousands of immigrants from other nations who joined them on the streets were not demanding "special rights" from a foreign government. They were demanding to be treated in the same fashion that this country treated millions of other white immigrants who came from Europe for the exact same reason they come here now.
You can claim tens of millions of people on your side if you'd like. I see one white guy sitting on a driveway telling me that corporate America is the problem but I'm gonna sit here and call names and place blame on a few poor guys from Mexico who just want eight bucks an hour for a honest days work.
I'm not racist. It's just the white people are amusing sometimes. They'd be even funnier if they didn't inflict so much harm.

All right we agree on something. No more corporate welfare. Change the constitution if necessary to repudiate the rationale that corporations are people.
Now, back to reality. Juan, you are getting better in your novels. Martin Luther King said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." I think it matters that millions of illegal aliens (this is a legal term, not a racial slur) are crossing our southern border, driving down Americans' hourly wage and appeasing the appetite of corporate America for cheap labor.
My son is a border patrol agent in San Diego. He tells me that over half the males he arrests have arrest records, primarily in California and Oregon. Are these the "few poor guys from Mexico who just want eight bucks an hour for an honest days work"?
Why won't you discuss what is currently legal? Anybody can go far enough back in history to prove the point that country x didn't used to be the way it is. My ancestors came to this country legally. I have Hispanic friends whose ancestors came to this country legally, and you don't even want to know what those friends think of illegal aliens. We have immigration laws, like every other country. Do you suggest we swing wide open the floodgates of immigration and accept without question whoever decides to enter our country and allow them to stay anonymously? Immigration laws bring order to immigration and filter out those who have nothing to offer this country. You see, Juan, immigration is a two way street. You're welcome if you can prove you're an asset to our country. Our country already has a surplus of uneducated, unskilled laborers, we don't need millions of uneducated illegal aliens.
I don't "call names" and I have never supported the idea of house to house sweeps to find illegals to deport. That's totally unnecessary. What is necessary is to go after those who employ illegals. This includes everyone, from the corporations to the day labor sites to the individual homeowners hiring someone to help them for a few hours. You see Juan, I have nothing against Brown people. I have plenty against people from other countries sneaking into my country and not having the courage when caught to stand up and say, "Yes, I broke the law and now I'm ready to accept my punishment."
Juan, I am "home." I was born here. My parents were born here. Their parents were born here.
I have cousins in Appalachia. Ever heard of the place? It's in America's eastern hill country. The people there are primarily White and are extremely poor. Charity begins at home, Juan. Why aren't you fighting for a better life for my American cousins?
You call my ancestors "cowards", but I'll bet my ancestors kicked your ancestors' asses, no matter who your ancestors are.
