FBI Special Agent Robbie Burroughs stands with a parachute found in North Clark County, Wash., on Tuesday. AP PhotoChildren playing in Amboy discovered an old tattered parachute. At the urging of the children, their Dad contacted the FBI. FBI agent Larry Carr overlaid the family's address onto a map made in the early days of the investigation and learned they lived right in Cooper's most probable landing zone, between Green and Bald mountains.
The FBI is hoping someone with expertise in parachutes will come forward and inspect the remnants they have to determine if it is the type of parachute used by Cooper in 1971, a Navy Backpack 6 with a 26-foot canopy, before beginning to excavate the property.

Is a major Pacific Northwest mystery and America's only unsolved high jacking closer to being solved, 37 years later?
If it is Cooper's parachute, will it just open more questions about how did the money discovered on the banks of the Columbia in Vancouver back in 1980 get there from Amboy?
Do we even want the legend of D.B. Cooper solved?

Media reports say this Parachute was buried. So D.B. Cooper buried the Parachute? If so he was (is) alive? I always thought that some of the Ransom money fell lose what ended up being found on the banks of the Columbia river in 1980 while D.B. Cooper was descending. Yea its an interesting Mystery, kinda like the Titanic before they found it in 1985 or a second gunman in the JFK murder. I wouldn't dought D.B Cooper was (is) alive after the jump back in 1971.
It will be interesting to see if anything comes of it.
I've always felt he got away with it, but we will see.
A part of me doesn't want to see it solved. Even though a criminal, his legend is part of the local lore now.
I've heard the theory that D.B. Cooper has permenantly gotten away with it inasmuch as he's dead. No, not at the time of the original incident. But I've heard the theory that the FBI knew exactly who he was but didn't feel like going after him because he knew something that he agreed not to bother the government with unless they harassed him. They're only now reopening the investigation because they know that they no longer need to worry about him talking.
But it's only a theory, heard secondhand.
I hadn't heard that one before, Keith.
It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this "find."
Wasn't it just last year someone came forward and said it was his now deceased brother that was Cooper?
Seems I recall reports of that and that he had worked for Northwest Orient at one time.
I'll have to dig around and see what I find.
In the meantime, the legend continues.
For me, the rumor came from a lady my mom works with whose husband fit an unusual number of the characteristics and always kept a briefcase nearby himself that she was to open when he died. But like I said, rumor secondhand.

Keith, this is what I was thinking about, Unmasking D.B. Cooper
Neat, Lew. Thanks for the link.
"D.B. Cooper's Parachute Not Found."
However, there is credible evidence that the chute had been used by Big Foot.
