New Hate Crime: Harassing Homeless

We're all good people here and we don't harass the homeless because it's not nice, but there are people out there, I suppose, who think it's sport to do so. That said, making the homeless a designated protected group under the Seattle hate crimes ordinance is down right stupid. The story's here. The guts are below:

Harassers who target the homeless could soon be charged with hate crimes under a proposal approved Tuesday by a Seattle City Council committee.

The measure would add the homeless as a class specifically protected under an existing city prohibition against malicious harassment based on gender identity, marital status, political ideology, age and parental status.

The move is largely symbolic. If approved by the full council, the law would have little practical effect in city courts, said City Attorney Tom Carr. As a gross misdemeanor, malicious harassment carries no greater penalty in municipal court than does regular harassment, Carr said.

That 'graf there says the move is largely symbolic. Maybe. For now. And just when we thought we might get legislation to save us from hot and cold running antagonistic beggars...
And just food for thought: will they get around to defining what "harassment" is?

Can this be reversed then? If a "homed" person harassing a "homeless" person is a hate crime, then wouldn't the reverse be true, too?

So, being followed and attacked with loud, angry demands for spare change, simply because I LOOK like I have a home, would be a hate crime, wouldn't it? When a homeless person blocks my path, and makes inappropriate comments about my wife or kids, is that now a hate crime?

Come on eddie don't you know that if you own something that makes you the bad guy.
Just ask the portland police . Thats what they told me after my car was broken into and my radio was stolen .The cops response was that if you come into this neighborhood that you should not drive or have nice stuff. You are just asking for it to be taken.
I am not kidding , that is wat the cop told me.

Eddie, good thinking. However, you and I both know why we have "hate crimes" legislation: to create a superclass of individuals.

Since I'm a "homed" person, may I sue the liberals for hating my hard work and blessings from God? Actually, I believe the "homeless" should sue the liberals too, since the libs have not only created dependence upon government, but have made it darn near impossible for the poor to break free of that dependence. The libs must hate just about everyone. Apparently, it helps validate their arrogance when they feel sorry for the rest of us.

The way things are going in this region, every infraction of the l;aw, from parking tickets to not having your seat belt on to jaywalking will be classified as a "hate crime". I wouldn't be surprised to see that closing the door on uninvited, unwanted, pesky Jehovahs Witnesses to be classified as a "hate crime".
