If you're a teacher who just wants to teach, get paid a decent salary, keep your head down and change lives, I'm afraid your union doesn't have the same idea. It doesn't just want fair pay, your union WANTS ALL OF IT.
There's bill to kill local control and roll all teachers pensions/insurance into one plan that only serves to strengthen the union---not the classroom. House Minority leader, Wayne Scott has an opinion on it here.
Here's another bill to kill the Charter School efforts by thousands of Oregonians. But it kills one school in particular: the Connections Academy. It's an online school. Oregon's certified smart education guys say, 'You know this distance learning thing...not real big here. Not a good thing here.' Or words to that effect. I'm sure they're right. This distance learning thing would never be effective at Harvard or University of Washington or Stanford or ...

I see "SARA GELSER" Hand Picked by the "Powers at Be" in Benton County
to replace the EVILLLLL KELLY WORTH-LESS got a $1000.00 from these _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ -.
Ps "Powers at be" and the "PUBLIC SECTOR teachers
unions", part of, or one in the same??? Hmmmmmm
PPS pull your kids out of the public schools folks.
NO KIDS-NO INDOCTRINATION.
Unions were originally formed to provide some sort of liveable conditions for workers. The union movement was actually put into full stride by the deplorable conditions at the Pullman Rail Car plant back in the 1880s.
Since then, unions have gone from helping their members get better working conditions (the 40-hour workweek, for one and better pay scales, for another), to being a royal pain in everyone's butt in their highhanded tactics in getting what they, not necessarily their members, want. This would include total control of the salaries, perks, and the veritable lives of their members.
It is time that the teachers union in Oregon and Washington crawl back under their respective rocks and let the teachers and the school administrators work out their negotiations without interference from the union bosses.
In retrospect, Jimmy Hoffa, John L. Lewis, and the other old-time union bosses could surely take lessons on control from the gang of thugs running the Oregon teachers union.
I have a son who attends Connections Academy.
He did not do well in public schools. He is dyslexic and I believe has ADHD. I have not had him tested for ADHD because I do not want him medicated. I would put him in school and if the teacher did not do their job or just didn't have the time to address my son I would pull him out of school to be homeschooled. He is a smart kid, but if he falls behind because the teacher can not handle addressing his disability, then it is really hard to catch him back up. I did not like the traditional homeschooling because there is the possibility that I may miss something that he should learn. I want my son to learn everything that the State requires, but there is no way for me to get the curriculum from the public schools. They don't cooperate in that matter either. I was so excited to hear about Connections Academy, because I am now able to use the public school system and not have to worry about me not teaching him everything. Now I can have books and a teacher and interaction with the other children at Connections Academy for the social benefits.
A lot of the students at Connections Academy have the same types of problems at public schools. It has a lot of kids with what I concider mild learning disabilities.
We know our kids better than the teachers and are able to help them learn better because we only have our own children to teach. We are also able to spend more time on the problem areas and less on there strong areas making their time spent on school more efficient.
There is also a perk to it that I love.
My husband works a strange schedule. Because of my ability to adjust my son's schedule so that they have the same schedule, my son sees his father more. We can also schedule his classes so that his father can address subjects that he is better at than me.
I want those of you who support this bill to feel free to respond on this blog. I want those of you who don't understand the importance of Connections Academy to learn why this is good for the children and good for the teachers.
The teachers are able to have a more ruley and structured class for those who don't have these issues.
Victoria,
Thank You for covering this story. Connections Academy is a small school, but extremely important.
