Subject: [Key-communicators-list] Monday Rally for schools attracts
1,000+ from Portland, 6 School Board members

MEDIA ADVISORY

More than 1,000 Portland parents and students and six members of the
Portland School Board will join thousands more to rally at the State
Capitol Monday on behalf of all Oregon schools.

The noontime Presidents Day Rally, organized by Stand for Children, will
call for a $6.3 billion state budget for K-12 education. The proposed
2007-08 Portland schools budget, based on that level of state funding,
allows Portland schools to start adding music, PE and the arts back into
the standard curriculum, adds 24 counselors at large elementary and K-8
schools and continues and expands programs to help high school students
succeed.

On Monday, parents, students and community members will board buses
across the city, with 14 buses leaving from PPS schools and six from
Portland State University.

Portland School Board Co-Chairs Dan Ryan and Bobbie Regan and Board
Directors Doug Morgan, Trudy Sargent, Dilafruz Williams and David Wynde
are participating in the Salem rally. (Ryan and Regan also will be in
Salem Sunday to participate in the Oregon School Boards Association's
legislative conference.)

The rally is co-sponsored or endorsed by a roster of 12 business,
community and education organizations.

For general information on the rally or to participate, go to
www.stand.org/or/2007rally/ or call 503.235-2305.

For more information about the Portland Public Schools budget, go to
www.pps.k12.or.us.

At Portland Public Schools, this is our goal: By the end of elementary,
middle, and high school, every student by name will meet or exceed
academic standards and will be fully prepared to make productive life
decisions. For more information on Portland Public Schools, call (503)
916-3304, e-mail us at pubinfo@pps.k12.or.us, or visit
www.pps.k12.or.us. Portland Public Schools is an equal opportunity
educator and employer.

Because money is always the answer to delivering better education. That's why kids are bused from all over the state along with teachers, staffers, et. al. to go to Salem on President's Day.
1) try this schtick on MLK Day and see what happens. Apparently President's Day, due to its having been demeaned (who's birthday is it again?), is merely a day off for the public employee union members to rustle up some chillins and take them to Salem for a photo op
2) if they can waste money for use of staff time, computers, mailings, etc to help organize themselves before the event, then why do we need more money for schools again?
**For the record the PPS Spokeswoman says she sent this from her home computer and says it's not illegal even though the group they were working with also works as a political action committee and a charity.

What? Who's lying? You had not posted the text or address(s) of the email, or reference to email itself before I made my first comment. You made an edit to your post after I made my comment. All it would take to spoil it, is to advertise it in advance that its another Liberal Annual event about to happen.Of course the Socialists are totally in control right now where it was different from 1991-2006 where they were not.
The Socialists always seem to take advantage of Presidents day for it.
Are the Bus companies in on this charade also????

Still can't produce the content of the message? According to the info you posted from said email, it was sent:

Friday, February 16, 2007 6:01 PM

Yet, the subject says:

[Key-communicators-list] Monday Rally for schools attracts 1,000+ from Portland, 6 School Board members

So, did this event take place on the Monday (2/12) previous to Friday (2/16), or on President's day (2/19)? If not the previous Monday, then just how can they send out a message proclaiming a rally that "attracts 1,000+ from Portland" BEFORE it has happened?

The content of the email might help to answer these questions - but I'm guessing you don't have it.

The Oregon School Boards Association, a trade group representing school board members statewide, tracks education bills on its Web site. Go to http://www.osba.org/leginfo/bills/index.asp
Governor's plans
Gov. Ted Kulongoski proposes a school budget for the next two-year cycle that's 14.2 percent more than current funding, though it's still $240 million shy of the amount demanded at Monday's rally.

The governor also wants to raise Tax's for Oregon universities by 17.1 percent and Tax's for community colleges by 12.6 percent.

In other education proposals, Kulongoski wants to raise the corporate minimum tax to expand Head Start preschool to every eligible child who wants it, provide $5 million for a mentoring program for young teachers, consolidate school employees into a single health-care insurance pool and pay for a wave of new construction at colleges and universities.

Hundreds appeal for more Tax's for schools and children

Socialist Statesman Journal

February 20, 2007

Hundreds of teachers, students, parents and politicians rallied at the State Capitol Monday to support higher spending on education and children's issues.

Stand for Children, which organized the rally, claims that $1 billion has been cut from Oregon schools over the last decade.

With the state's improving economy, "There's enough money to pay for every school district in Oregon to restore programs and lower class sizes," Salem parent Gaelen McAllister, the event's emcee, told the crowd.

Sen. President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, said it was the first time in his legislative career that he has seen so many groups join together in support of children and education.

"I've never seen this kind of organization," he said.

Courtney, along with House Speaker Jeff Merkley, D-Portland, and Gov. Ted Kulongoski, pledged to support the group's goals.

They include:
Increasing funding for schools in order to lower class sizes and restore programs such as music and art that were cut from some districts.

Increasing the corporate minimum tax and redirecting the corporate kicker into a rainy day fund.

Fully funding Head Start. About 3,000 eligible children currently are on waiting lists.

Providing health care coverage for all Oregon children via an increase in the tobacco tax.

"This session, I think we're going to spend the money on the kids," Courtney said. (sure you are)

Thirty busloads of supporters from across the state attended the noontime rally, which was supported by the Oregon Bus Project, Oregon Head Start Association, Upward Bound Capstone Class from Portland State University, Oregon Business Association, Children First for Oregon, Children's Institute, Rural Organizing Project, Our Oregon, Oregon Education Association, American Federation of Teachers -- Oregon and Oregon School Employees Association.
(The Oregon Bus Project owned by the Democratic Party of Oregon)

"I feel like my taxes need to be invested in my children," she said. "We need smaller class sizes and music, physical education and art."

Stand for Children also is calling for $6.3 billion in education funding for the next two years. That's $240 million more than the governor has proposed.

Anyhow, I don't think she yet understands, that what she has posted in her blog entry is a reject email header, i.e. an undeliverable email sent by someone not allowed to send to the PPS list(s).

Her "proof" is her undoing, yet I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Oh yes klatu, I had forgotten that taking part in civics is illegal and communistic, or socialist (hard to say since you use both as if they're the same).

You have the freedom to speak how you feel, and to engage in civics in the manner in which you believe (within the law). Yet, you want to say that anyone doing the same with a different opinion than you is committing crimes? That makes you a fascist.

Do you know what is, if not criminal, unethical? Calling people criminals for having a different opinion than you, and creating fake email to slander a public institution you don't happen to agree with.

Why are you so intent on forcing people out of public schools and into your choice of private school?

R_equals_BS said...

Bottom line, it's not unethical, nor is it illegal for PPS to lobby legislature in it's interest. In fact, I'm pretty certain they have a staff dedicated to doing just that. Had we been talking about an election campaign, it'd be a different story.

What's wrong is that the information you provide as "evidence" is clearly manufactured, and not very well at that. You seem to have a hot button in regards to information you feel is misleading or a mis-characterization of your person. So, just what exactly is it you think you are doing with this post - heaping flowers and candies on PPS?

Criticize them if you like, but don't manufacture your own evidence to defame them. Jeeze.

Thanks for *cough* finally posting the email. In case your readers might want to know,

According to ORS 260.432 -
http://www.sos.state.or.us/elections/publications/restrictions.pdf

7. Legislation and Lobbying: Support or Opposition of Legislative Bills

ORS 260.432 does not address the activity related to support or opposition to legislative bills before Oregon’s state legislature, unless the bill is one that results in a referral to an election (usually a House or Senate Joint Resolution). If a bill results in a referral to an election, at the time the issue is certified to be included on the ballot for an election as a ballot measure, ORS 260.432 would take effect and any public employee would be restricted from using their work time to support or oppose the measure, and this office would investigate complaints of alleged violation. This however would not prohibit a public entity and its public employees from continuing work that might be related to the same subject as the measure, as long as the activity does not constitute support or
opposition to the ballot measure.
Additionally, a public agency’s activities supporting or opposing legislation do not make the agency a “political committee” within the
meaning of ORS Chapter 260. A political committee involves the purpose of supporting a candidate, measure or political party. Supporting or opposing bills before the state legislature does not fit into the definition of a political committee and therefore no campaign
finance reports are required.
