This video shows Carter to be nothing more than a self-serving, has-been politician that was arguably the sorriest, most ineffective president this country has had since Millard Fillmore. What is even worse, just about everything he says or writes is anti-American and/or anti-administration. This guy is not a loyal American. Rather, he is merely an AmINO. I believe that many of our problems in the middle east are largely the results of his total ineffectiveness and screw-ups before, during, and after the Iranian hostage crisis, along with his micro-managing of the failed rescue attempt in the Iranian desert . This failure rightly resulted in his getting his butt kicked by Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Victoria,
Is your title to this post supposed to be sarcasm?
Who did you vote for in 1976?

Jimmy Carter has true deep convictions and he cares about those who are oppressed. His competence (or lack of) is another issue. But he cares and has deeper convictions and more integrity than any other politician I am familiar with.

I love the look on Jimmy's face as he realizes the caller isn't a boot licker.

Me, I still love the look on the Reverand Brothah Jimmah's face when Reagan simply said, "There he goes again." Priceless.

coboble,

You like Carter. The man who threw a friend of the US under the bus that help establish a radical islamic government in Iran. The man who knew before hand that if he let the Shah into the US that the Iranians would go nuts resulting in US hostages being held for 444 days. The man who failed to rescue the hostages and killed 9 members of the military.

The man whose deep convections and integrity left the embassy staff in Terhan when he had the time to pull them out before letting the Shah into the country.

Were you asleep during those 444 days?

Here's my take on Carter. First, at one time I did just blindly buy into the idea that Carter is a great humanitarian and a great human being, and looked at it that maybe he just lacked the necessary skillset to be president. Or that maybe the main problem with Carter was that he was just too good and too nice to be president, that's how good of a human being he is. The press propagated that image of him and I just accepted it as true. I was willing to believe that stuff. I swallowed it whole hog. For a time. Eventually I came to realize that all that great humanitarian and great human being stuff was all swill, just the carefully manicured image that he himself created and nurtured along, part and parcel of the Nobel Peace Prize that he coveted and then systematically went after.

The blush was off the blossom for me was when years after he left office I noticed a steady recurring pattern with Carter's public comments. Mixed in with his Habitat for Humanity stuff, and his comments about third world elections, were his partisan political comments, and after awhile it dawned on me that Carter rarely if ever had any kind words at all for any Republicans, no matter what the issue, no matter what the circumstances. Carter could be counted on by the Dems to be trotted out to bash the Republicans, especially sitting Republican presidents. And, hey, that's fine, he has the right to do that way and to be a loyal partisan if he wants to be. It's a free country, baby. But here be the deal about that: you don't get the right to be a cheap and snarky partisan hack AND to also at the same time lay a claim to being a great humanitarian and a great human being. One has to give in favor of the other. Bottom line: to be a truly kind and generous and good human being and to be called a great humanitarian it by definition means that your humanitarianism has to extend beyond applying to just your friends and beyond to just those that you like and philosophically agree with. In fact, it's supposed to specifically include applying to your foes, enemies, and philosophical adversaries.

Carter's venom is never more evident than when it comes to Ronald Reagan, who by all accounts truly *was* a genuinely kind man. Carter never in any way got over the 1980 campaign nor past the fact that Reagan beat him. He has never accepted the fact that he lost that election mainly because of his own haplessness. Since then, whenever Carter is asked anything about Reagan, Carter comes across as bitchy, and spiteful. This was true even on the occasion of Reagan's funeral when even then on that day of honoring and remembering Reagan, Carter just didn't have it within himself to be gracious.

What Carter has done is managed to master the art of being simultaneously a loser, a bad loser, and a sanctimoneous bad loser. And hey, when you think about it, that's no small feat by itself. But then, maybe that's too harsh. But one thing he isn't is a great humanitarian and a great human being.

zeb,
I am still buying into it, and I am not ready to give it up. Again I am not certain I know the truth, but I don't think others do either. Jimmy has never done anything to lead me to believe he has ever had anything but the best of intentions.

I have similar feelings about Bush. I believe he, in his heart, is usually doing what he believes is right.
And I think he is about to pull out of Iraq (the exact cut and run which some have feared).

kodiak,
I had no interest in Politics during the 444 days you speak of.
I was more interested in watching cartoons than news, and rarely paid any attention to foreign affairs.

The C-span Hostess (Liberal Connie)
cuts another Concervative off. But watch her she'll let a Socialist Lib ramble on. I've called into C-span many times and have been cut off like this also. I agree with some of what the caller said, but I would have been a little more tackful. Jimma Carter was a real failure as a President and I think he is a Joke today.

For a president, Jimmy Carter was a good house builder.

Victoria,
Thank you for finding something nice to say about Jimmy.
I would be willing bet that you voted for him once, maybe even twice (not counting primaries).

Way too many of my "idols" have slipped (or are slipping) off of their pedestals.

My oldest sister changed her party affiliation due to Jimmy (and may still be a Republican), but she still admires him as a person. She is wise and aware and has a degree in History.

coboble,

I would have said something nice if Carter stuck to building houses.

The problem he is not smart enough to know when to shut up. His legacy is building houses not being pre4sident and as I have said should have stuck to it.
