Yikes, my best well wishes!
(p.s. - Thanks for the thread.)
Victoria, I too hope your emergency isn't too severe and hope the best for you.
As for Open Thread Thursday, a subject that is irritating me and gets little coverage is so many dogs being brought into stores today.
I don't mean Seeing Eye Dogs, but the little poodles and garden variety pets masquerading as "Service Animals."
Why is it people can't leave their animals at home?
I have always found it irritating that people feel the need to drag their dogs everywhere!
Dogs are allowed in my office building. I can't describe how annoying it is to have a dog running down our floor hallway barking, etc. I've even been nearly attacked on occasion, while I was sitting at my desk.
I wish more often, people would exercise some politeness along with their liberties.
A profound use of an open thread, boys.....lol.
Apparently the dog that "nearly attacked" you didn't want to catch anything.......sheesh.
So, instead of belittling us, why don't you post a topic bear...
suomynona,
Service dogs when out in public are on duty. When on duty service dogs are very well behaved and do not go up and down halls barking. Nor will a service dog attack anyone (except for police dogs and only on command). Service dogs are not allowed to be aggressive.
"Why is it people can't leave their animals at home?"
Do you expect the physically disabled and blind to leave their assistance and guide dogs at home?
kodiak, none of the dogs I am talking about are service dogs - not even close.
I think if you read lew's post a little closer, you may notice we are not talking about honest service animals...
Do you have dogs and drag them everywhere with you? If so, give us some insight.
Kodiak, for once Backwards is correct. I am not talking about Seeing Eye Dogs (more commonly referred to as Service Animals today). Those dogs are highly trained and present no danger or problems to others, unless they tried to harm the dogs master.
What I am talking about are the little everyday ordinary mostly untrained little fuzzballs that people have just for pets.
I see them in shopping carts sitting where small children may be sitting next. I see them being held in someones arms walking through grocery stores even though there is a state health code against it. I even see them on leashes in some of these same stores, one telling me they had to replace the store carpet due to a dogs "accident."
No problem you say? I had the displeasure of stepping in a pile of doggie doo last year in the toy aisle of a popular retailer. I saw one get excited at being petted where I work, in the customer service area and pee all over the floor. Mind you, this is the same area small children sit and slide around in while their parents are getting their cars written up for service. The clean up consisted of wiping the urine up with a paper towel.
Pet Smart, where I expect to find dogs of all kinds, at least has a large sign up saying they are welcome, provided they are leashed and vaccinated. Other stores may or may not have a small sign (6 by 4 inches) saying they are not permitted, but then no one enforces that.
I do not dislike dogs and have had a few as pets in my lifetime. However, it would never cross my mind to impose my pet on others inside of a store.
suomynona/lew,
Actually we are all in agreement concerning service dogs that include guide dogs for the blind, assistance dogs for the disabled and hearing dogs for the deaf. My statement is so others reading this thread will understand that some dogs out in public are allowed because of their status as service animals.
I am experienced with a service dog that helps a friend mine. I also have a dog whose status is as a pet and does not go all over with me.
I also have come across the fuzzballs that lew refers to and have the same issues. People who cape untrained dogs in order to take them into stores and other businesses do a great dis-service to real service animals because of the mis-behavoir and accidents.
Anytime my friend is out and about her dog accompanies her everywhere. Before going the dog is walked and while out is walked again with poop picked up and tossed in a local trash can.
We're all getting along too well here. ;)
How about this one.
Where's all the reports or stories of the "throngs of businesses" that would have to close down when WA passed their no smoking law?
Did profits really go down? Did they go up? Has anything changed?
Scratch that, this headline will breed a much better topic...
"An ongoing military investigation supports allegations that U.S. Marines in November killed 24 innocent Iraqi civilians without being provoked, senior Pentagon sources said Friday. Charges, including murder, could soon be filed against Marines allegedly involved, the sources said."
Don't go to Germany if you don't like dogs. Germans take their pets everywhere and it's perfectly legal and acceptable.
Backwards, I think it is inappropriate for the media or Congresscritters to broadcast reports like that while there is an ongoing investigation into what happened. Murtha has brought the ire of amny a Veteran by doing so and basically announcing them guilty already.
Of course, his reasoning is apparently to put Bush into a bad light but it ends up hurting the troops morale to hear speech like his. Don't even get me started on Kerry.
I would rather it reported that an investigation is ongoing and let them do their jobs.
Overthehill, when I wa in Germany, although many years ago now, it was children that Germans loved so much, not dogs. It's pretty sad to see people take dogs and make them as surrogate children.
Julius Caesar complained that wealthy Romans had dogs that they pampered and doted over as if they were children, indeed, often heaping on them more care and affection than a normal person would give to a child.
How little some things have changed over the past 2,000 years.
On another note, I hope all can take the time to visit the Memorial Wall out at Lincoln Park this weekend. It is a very moving exhibit.
My wife and I went last evening to say hello to a couple old friends of mine.
While there we stopped and said Hi to Victoria. Guys, whether you agree with her or not, she is a very nice lady. My wife and I both enjoyed the little chat we had while she was on break.
If you do nothing else this weekend, try to stop in and see the memorial.
My father in law, Vietnam Veteran, VA hospital administrator, and volunteer with many veteran and local military organizations was part of the motorcycle escort through the gorge with the wall. I was proud to know he was able to be part of such a great memorial coming to Portland.
We've been to the memorial twice already this weekend and will be going again. It's hard to say in words how it feels to be there, so just go, and spend some time in reflection on what others have given, and what they gave it for.
I had hoped that we would, as a family, be able to attend the memorial with my pa in law, Friday night while Victoria took advantage of the event for her show. I would have brought him by Victoria's station so she could tell him to his face how he's a wussy, un-American, and doesn't support the troops - since he calls himself a "bleeding heart liberal," and "doesn't support the Iraq invasion." Or is it only when she's hiding behind a mic she can be so indignant?
Sorry for the rant. I'm sure she's a "nice" lady.
Backwards, I'm sure your father-in-law is a good man. Even if he doesn't support the War, he has my gratitude and I extend my hand out as a fellow Veteran.
However, there are several on the left who do not support the Troops or the War. Several say they support the troops but not the war and quite honestly, that confuses me more than anything else. To me it is like saying I support the Police, but not them arresting criminals.
That being said, to each his own. There are other veterans who don't support the war effort for whatever reason they have. Since they are fellow Veterans with me, let's leave it at I support them, but not their views.
And yes, Victoria is a very nice Lady. My wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed meeting her.
Hmmm. Maybe you could just say, you support her but not her show? ;-)
Backwards, I'm sure your father-in-law is a good man. Even if he doesn't support the War, he has my gratitude and I extend my hand out as a fellow Veteran.
Thank you lew. I appreciate that.
...Since they are fellow Veterans with me, let's leave it at I support them, but not their views...
It appears to me lew you do understand how you can support your fellow American without having to agree with their views at all.
Hmmm. Maybe you could just say, you support her but not her show?
I support her as an American, and celebrate her right to speak how she feels and do what she feels is right. I would never call her un-American, or a "wussy" because her views are different than mine.
btw...
Several say they support the troops but not the war and quite honestly, that confuses me more than anything else. To me it is like saying I support the Police, but not them arresting criminals.
I would rather liken it to saying you support the police, but not the police chief or commissioner and the policies they have laid out.
Back to the earlier comments about dogs, in Florida, the legislature has adopted a law that will allow counties to pass ordinances that will allow restaurants to let patrons bring in their dogs. Victoria Taft voiced general support of the idea.
I find the idea repulsive. I would seriously consider not patronizing any restaurant that allowed a patron to bring in any dog other than a service animal.
Victoria Taft voiced general support of the idea.
You aren't surprised are you? She's a dog person...
I think in general, you have more to worry about when dining out than anything a dog could add to the experience.
If it's legal and people feel the need to drag their mutts everywhere they go, good on them.
You won't find me in those places anymore. The mere thought of watching people let their "good buddies" lick the dinner from inside of their mouths makes me ill.
(And please, no claims that kind of stuff "doesn't happen." It would be nearly as stupid a statement as the "I don't understand it, my dog "never" barks.")
I do love my Maxi
