Why You Shouldn't Be So GaGa Over Google

Stories are legion about google's left sided responses to
search terms or including bizarre blogs as "News" sources. Now, I think, conservatives or fair minded people might want to consider a new search engine. (Alta Vista comes to mind.) If you put the word "Failure" into google and hit "I'm Feeling Lucky" you get a picture of the President. Bye, Google,

Victoria,
Type failure into Alta Vista and the bio for President Bush is one of the choices.

Slow news day?

And old news at that...

Also, will you continue to blog with Google?

As someone who was around during the struggles that the country endured under President Johnson and who followed very closely the struggles that we went through with President Nixon, who was eventually forced to resign in the face of a serious threat of impeachment for sereious crimes in office, I believe that we have never had a President who some completely polarized the American people as George W. Bush has done. For that reason, I do not consider it inappropriate to dub him a failure.

westsidedavid,
That is a lot of blame to place on one person. I am at least as old as you and have seen much the same landscape.
I disagree with your opinion that Bush is a failure. Given the events that have occurred during his term in office he would have to done nothing at all in response to 9/11 to be considered a failure.

As for polarization on Sept 11, 2001 the world has changed, but some wish to go back to Sept 10, 2001. Whether you agree with the war or disagree just the same we are at war. The polarization has come from the democrats who have jumped ship on us. They have to take some of the blame, if you are going to sit there and make such assignments. For my part I refuse to forget those who were killed on 9/11 ans why me must fight.

Has Bush done everything perfectly - no. It is impossible to do everything perfectly. If spent anytime at all sticking his finger in the air to see which way the political winds were blowing from I'd be on his case for it. I justg haven't see him do that on national defense.

From my vantage point I see a President who believes that the decisions he has made are in the countries best interest and that he is defending us to the best of his abilities. Beating up on him for it is silly.

Lastly, I am not angry, maybe a bit testy.

oh kids, we know you're all so smart but some folks actually don't know about this with Google.

Khaldun said...

Also, will you continue to blog with Google?

Ok, so in case you don't know, like some people(?), Blogger is a part of Google....

So, are you calling to boycott only "Google Search," not Google itself?

Kodiak said...

Victoria,
Google is not the only search emgine to include President Bush's Bio as one of the choices.

Yahoo, Alta Vista

I would consider the source in this case especially if all return the same selection.

Kodiak said...

Victoria,
Sub ask for alta vista

Khaldun said...

Here ya go Victoria, go after all 3,820 websites linking to the Bush bio page from their pages using the term(s) "miserable failure."

Leave Google alone.

The reason for your Google result

Kodiak said...

suomynona,
What are you now the search engine cop?

Leave Google alone, get real. you don't think the bloggers here can really hurt Google do ya?

That really would be impressive if we can pull it off. Google today tomorrow the world. Opps sorry I kinda got carried away there.

Khaldun said...

eh? I'm not the one trying to implicate Google.

I just assumed Victoria would want to go after who's actually responsible...or would she rather have an American version of Google China?

suomynona,
No. But one would be wise to know what you are supporting by use and the indirect message that it sends.

You and I do not have enough power to effect google anyway.

Khaldun said...

You and I do not have enough power to effect google anyway.

You, along with Victoria, have a fundamental misunderstanding of how Google (or any search engine) works.

There could be no better example of how you or I can affect Google's results than the "miserable failure" link campaign.

Kodiak said...

Actually I wasn't thinking of how the search engine works or how to perform searches. Nice try anyway.

Khaldun said...

So what were you thinking of?

Khaldun said...

And just why are you trying to hurt Google again?

It appears you are advocating Google to censor itself, without actually saying it...

Kodiak said...

Financial.

The only real way of hurting a business is in the wallet.

Kodiak said...

No one is talking censorship. Freedom is a double edge sword it cuts both ways. Google is free to state any opinion ot wishes to. I am free not to use it if I disagree with that speech.

Khaldun said...

But you (and Victoria) are incorrectly representing this AS Google's opinion - which it is not.

Kodiak said...

Really try typing failure into lycos or ask.

Somehow in google an association was set up between failure and the President's BIO particularly when you select 'i feel lucky'

Khaldun said...

From the article I linked to (to answer your "somehow"):

"How did this come about, especially since the phrase "miserable failure" appears nowhere in the President's biography? It was the result of a "Google bombing" project organized by George Johnston back at the end of October 2003, in which he used his blog to urge others to include links connecting the phrase "miserable failure" (a term used prominently by Democratic hopeful Dick Gephardt) with the President's biography in their own web sites and blogs....after more and more netizens implemented the same link on their sites and urged others to do the same — it reached the top spot soon afterward. (A #1 ranking at Google brings the added bonus of returning the targeted site when users select the search engine's "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.) "

Type in "idiot" or "incompetent". Bush also comes up. Wow, this is a surprise. Although, Nixon was a liar, I never considered him to be an idiot or incompetent. He is looking better every day

I am a coservative Christian and would love to see a more balanced search engine but search engines go by the popularity of a subject within its environment in other words it can be tampered with...and I believe that is what happens to alot of information these days!

Khaldun said...

Perhaps Google China will fit your desires for "balance."

The concept seems to fail all of you that if you could round up enough support from other bloggers to change the popularity of what web page "miserable failure" links to, your issue with Google would be over.

Why don't you give it a try? Seriously.

And Victoria, seems you support Google since you have decided to continue with your blog here.*

* Hypocritical?

Fizziwigg said...

I'm sorry suomynona, "miserable failure" would still come up Bush every time. In their hearts conservative Christians know that.

Khaldun said...

fizzi, if there were more links from websites using the term "miserable failure" to a different site than there are currently to Bush's bio - then that page would indeed trump the current result.

I challenge Victoria to start a campaign to change said results - while she continues to both boycott and blog with Google...
