Look, Nagin is an idiot. Blanco is an idiot who's probably also corrupt. But neither of them are President of the United States of America. Neither of them preside over resources who have the unique ability to respond to a disaster of Katrina's magnitude. Neither of them serve the people of this country, who expect that when they are stranded without food and water and shelter, those resources will not sit idle waiting for our boy king to learn a G major chord.
I'm sure it's okay for all the lower, middle, and upper class aristocrat white folks to repeat or echo what they take as racist sentiment as long as a black man or woman has set the talking points.
Remember how Vic and her theocracy yearning, country dividing members of the Republican party felt about ol'Hillary talking about "plantations." She was white so how dare she!
Victoria Taft would like to blame Mayor Nagin for a great del of what went wrong in New Orleans, while exonerating Mr. Bush and the federal government. Well, it is getting harder. A Senate committee attempting to investigate the government's response to Katrina is reporting that the White House talks about cooperating, but has stonewalled to a remarkable degree and continues to refuse to provide even basic information to the Senate. I am sure that Ms Taft and other conservatives will say that this is merely Democratic grandstanding, but one of the senators angered by the White House's behavior is Susan Collins of Maine, a Republican.
New York Times 1/24/06: The White House was told in the hours before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans that the city would probably soon be inundated with floodwater, forcing the long-term relocation of hundreds of thousands of people, documents to be released Tuesday by Senate investigators show. A Homeland Security Department report submitted to the White House at 1:47 a.m. on Aug. 29, hours before the storm hit, said, "Any storm rated Category 4 or greater will likely lead to severe flooding and/or levee breaching."
Prior warning of the WTC/Pentagon attacks, prior warning of potential flooding in New Orleans, and prior warning/knowledge that Iraq DID NOT, in fact, possess illegal weapons. And how did Bush, Inc. react to all of this? Well, we lost the twin towers, we lost a hunk of New Orleans, and we've lost billions of dollars and thousands of lives over Iraq. Human life is obviously of no value to Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, nor any of their ilk. Just sickening.
Prior warning? As a matter of fact, there had been a full detailed study several years earlier addressing exactly the situation that New Orleans faced, and the need for an aggressive federal response to the resulting crisis.
When Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, President Bush remained in seclusion in Crawford, Texas, in such isolation that his staff eventually realzied that they would need to violate his decorum by forcing the issue on him. Realizing that this could bring his wrath down on the messenger who brought the bad news, potentially ending someone's career, they in effect drew straws to figure out who would break the news.
The President's response was less than heroic. He praised the held of FEMA ("Hell of a job, Brownie"), and said that he hoped Senator Trent Lott would throw a big party as soon as he rebuilt his Mississippi beach house.
Within a few days, Mr. Brown resigned amid charges of gross incompetence, cronyism, and resume inflation; and Senator Lott distanced himself from the President, realizing that his comments were shockingly insensitive while many thousands of people are worrying about when, how, or if they will ever been able to rebuild anything that amounts to a home.
So Victoria Taft puts up her post mocking Mayor Nagin. Oh, well.
Dear klatu: If I recall American history correctly, this country was founded because our ancestors grew tired of a government from Britain that taxed them while not providing the services that they felt they were due. Further, when our forefathers adopted the Constitution, they felt that the right to speak freely and to publish comments, including (or perhaps especially) comments challenging the government was so important that they included it in the first amendment to the Constitution.
To summarize my remarks: (1) I think Ms Taft's posting of her redone version of the New Orleans Superdome is suggestively racist; (2) I think President Bush could have been and should have been more responsive to the crisis that Hurricane Katrina presented. If you'd care to stop the name-calling, perhaps you would explain why making those remarks makes me a "communist."
Obviously someone has lost their sense of humor. This is just a humorous post to a humorous mayor. Besides, the Federal Government CAN NOT start working until the Mayor/Governor of a disaster area request it.
David: because everything you believe in is right out of the communist AGENDA. Are you ashamed of being who you really are, A COMMUNIST???? and I'm not name calling. Why don't you and your little friends be honest about who you are. Most democrats believe in and liked the concept of Commumism. You fight for it every day. And Capitalist people like me wake up every morning to push you back. Your friends lost in the USSR and your going to continue to lose here in the de-regulated - and free - USA.
KLATU: because everything you believe in is right out of the fascist AGENDA. Are you ashamed of being who you really are, A FASCIST??? and I'm not name calling. Why don't you and your little friends be honest about who you are. Most republicans1 believe in and liked the concept of Fascism. You fight for it every day. And Progessives like me wake up every morning to push you back. Your friends lost in Germany and Japan in WWII and your going to continue to lose here in the de-regulated - and free - USA.
klatu: Strange -- I did not realize that the Communist agenda stressed individual liberty as one of its major premises, because individual liberty is at the core of my belief system.
Strange also -- I thought Communism called for the government ownership of basic industries. I don't favor that.
Finally, I don't believe in silent subservience to a government that fails to provide the leadership that we need, and violates the Constitution of the United States in a wide variety of actions.
Somehow, klatu, I don't think I quite qualify as a Communist.

Ms Taft:
Mayor Nagin's comments have a racist overtone. Unfortunately, so do you retorts. And two wrongs do not make a right.
Wait wait!

Careful guys, or they are going blame you for what happened.
