Russian Leader Calls for Gang Rape of US Secretary of State

From the New York Daily News

Steamed about Rice,
Russian pol unleashes rant

Russian pol Vladimir Zhirinovsky says what Condi needs is a man.

Condoleezza Rice might want to see if there’s room in one of those “black site” terror-suspect prisons for Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

The wacko leader of Russia’s Liberal and Democratic Party has surpassed his earlier screeds with a misogynist attack on our secretary of state.

Speaking with Pravda this week, Zhirinovsky chastised Rice for calling on Russia to “act responsibly” in supplying natural gas to Ukraine.

The fascistic pol attributed that “coarse anti-Russian statement” to Rice being “a single woman who has no children.”

“If she has no man by her side at her age, he will never appear,” Zhirinovsky ranted on. “Condoleezza Rice needs a company of soldiers. She needs to be taken to barracks where she would be satisfied.

“Condoleezza Rice is a very cruel, offended woman who lacks men’s attention,” he added. “Such women are very rough. … They can be happy only when they are talked and written about everywhere: ‘Oh, Condoleezza, what a remarkable woman, what a charming Afro-American lady! How well she can play the piano and speak Russian!’

“Complex-prone women are especially dangerous. They are like malicious mothers-in-law, women that evoke hatred and irritation with everyone. Everybody tries to part with such women as soon as possible. A mother-in-law is better than a single and childless political persona, though.”

A State Department spokesman told us Rice would not “dignify the article with a response.”

Zhirinovsky has made no secret of his insanity in the past. Besides praising Hitler and encouraging the use of nuclear weapons, he has advocated Russia’s invasion and “reacquisition” of Alaska. To eradicate bird flu, he’s suggested arming every Russian and ordering them to shoot everything with feathers. Perhaps we could fit him with a Big Bird costume.

Pot to Kettle: Part Trois

Portland City Commissioners are SHOCKED, SHOCKED that the Tram costs so much and that they didn’t know it!
Day two of the Oregonian finally discovering the Tram Scam.
Hey, Oregonian, as long as you guys over there are beginning to see the light, may we recommend a hard look at the urban renewal dollars spent that remove dollars (hey how about we call it ‘urban removal dollars’?) from the public trough that could be used for schools?
Oh, wait, I know, how about the rip off that is the half a mil for the hippies at Tryon Creek State Park.
Here are some other areas where the Oregonian could make some inquiries instead of just rubber stamping the local authorities.

This after the schools refuse to close even MORE schools due to diminishing numbers of students
This after the city paid off protesters to the tune of $300,000 for getting pepper sprayed after they refused to get out of the street and impeding law abiding citizens
This after they oversaw tax abatements to wealthy Pearl District (and other) districts
This after building a tram for OHSU–against the wishes of the citizenry which has zoomed up from $15 million to $45 million
This after the water bureau pissed away two computer systems
This after the city has proposed taxing real estate purchases to give to the poor

This after the city has proposed taxing the internet and cell phone
Expansion of the convention center and moving forward for plans for hotel something that will not help Oregon get more convention dollars because of a depression in the Convention Business for everywhere except ‘Vegas.

US Schools:Stuck on Stupid

John Stossel of ABC News looks into school choice, why schools don’t teach as well as they used to, and the future of public education in one of his news specials tonight at 10pm entitled, “Stupid in America.” Stossel will be in Portland February 5th speaking about this as well as other issues he’s delved into over the years. Stossel is in Portland as a guest of Cascade Policy Institute and KPAM Radio. We’ll see you there. Meantime, watch tonight and be amazed! Here’s an opinion piece Stossel has just written for Reason Magazine.
Here’s a takeaway from his Reason piece on kids taking the same tests in the US and Belgium.

The Belgians did better because their schools are better. At age ten, American students take an international test and score well above the international average. But by age fifteen, when students from forty countries are tested, the Americans place twenty-fifth. The longer kids stay in American schools, the worse they do in international competition. They do worse than kids from countries that spend much less money on education.
This should come as no surprise once you remember that public education in the USA is a government monopoly. Don’t like your public school? Tough. The school is terrible? Tough. Your taxes fund that school regardless of whether it’s good or bad. That’s why government monopolies routinely fail their customers. Union-dominated monopolies are even worse.
The inability to fire the bad and reward the good is the biggest reason schools fail the kids. Lack of money is often cited the reason schools fail, but America doubled per pupil spending, adjusting for inflation, over the last 30 years. Test scores and graduation rates stayed flat. New York City now spends an extraordinary $11,000 per student. That’s $220,000 for a classroom of twenty kids. Couldn’t you hire two or three excellent teachers and do a better job with $220,000?

The Washington State Smoking Ban: SNUFF IT

How about giving people the choice of whether or not to go into a smoky place?Instead, smokers were snuffed out again when 63% of the voters opted for everything, everywhere to go smoke free. There were plenty of smoke free places from which to choose before the smoking ban was put into effect, what was the matter with that?
The only long term study of second hand or environmental smoke related problems shows:

“The results do not support a causal relation between environmental tobacco smoke and tobacco related mortality, although they do no rule out a small effect. The association between exposure to tobacco smoke and coronary heart disease and lung cancer may be considerably weaker than generally believed.” It was a 38 year long study. Here it is.

Now tavern and bar owners whose business has plummeted are striking back. They’ve introduced a bill in the legislature to exempt places that have seen a 10% or greater reduction in business following the smoking ban.
Here’s who’s helping out the bar and tavern owners. And here’s where you call in Olympia to talk to your rep to modify this stupid ban 1-800-562-6000
